For all the hype about Comtois, he reminds me a lot of Nic Deslauriers.

Yes I’d have to agree. DiPietro was challenged way more than the Finnish goalie.

DiPietro did his job. A lot of others (including behind the bench), not so much. Not sure what was worse: picking Comtois to take the penalty shot or his attempt.
Switched over to the USA CZE game. Go Poehling and Primeau. Go Romanov later tonight.

Tough way to lose no doubt..
At the risk of sounding like a homer, i thought Brook was Canada's best defenseman overall. Bouchard got all the press but i thought he was extremely weak defensively. Very disappointed watching Suzuki. He did very little and I'm sure his lack of use has to do with his soft perimeter play. A +3 rating in the tournament is an indicator that not only was he not scoring but there wasnt a lot of offense when he was on yhe ice. Comimg out party so far for Poehling.. gotta get him signed... and romanov has definitely looked like the hidden gem they thought. Tough for canada but i am excited to see some of these other prospects get their chance on the big stage

Canada didn’t have a terribly good roster this year, but to me, coaching adjustments were a real weakness. As drkcloud says , Brook was probably our best defenseman and was stuck on the 3rd pairing. There was way too much trust placed in Bouchard and Dobson.
I’m not sure Hunter changed any lines. Glass was only good in spots and on face offs. Comtois was Deslauriers. Yet they got paraded out for the PP despite being ineffective. Hunter played it safe. Old school mentality.

I expect Brook to be a better NHL defenseman than either Bouchard or Dobson. Bold prediction and perhaps silly.

I hope he's not pigeonholed by future coaches like Hunter. He has great first pass and a good instinct on when to pinch. Very smart player IMHO

Disappointing, but I guess full credit to Finland for playing on the road like 10,000 km from home, skating hard, and not backing down.
Brook and Suzuki were not major cogs in the machine that Hunter envisioned but I think they have bright futures, Brook in particular.

Tough to win 1-0 in any game, let alone a quarter-final....but the Finns were unbelievably lucky on their goal.....and on the broken stick in the slot that was otherwise the winner for Canada. Cherry will have a field day with Glass for putting his stick in the way of the winning shot and deflecting it into the top of the net. D-men are taught to do that. Most of the time, it works. Cherry piles on when it doesn't, and praises when it does. Anyway....Canada needs to lose once in a while. Keeps the program from becoming complacent. Maybe Hunter doesn't get an NHL look, considering the past two games and failing to medal. Lack of coaching adjustments as seventeen pointed out above. Choosing Comtois, too, perhaps...was he the absolute BEST choice for the penalty shot? Hunter, post-game: "He's (Comtois) been our best shoot-out guy in practice. He's got a great move. He's had a lot of success with it."It would appear he forgot about the great move.

Primeau got the win today. The US advances. Poehling should have been given an assist on the third goal, but they gave it to Anderson.
Romanov just assisted on Russia’s second goal. They scored two in 91 seconds to go up 2-0 in the first.

Suzuki made a lot of sweet passes that were not converted. Canada lost because they had a coach with an old school mentality and no game changer on the roster.

Romanov with another assist on their fourth goal. Still lots of time in the first. Yikes.
Berg, Mellanby and Timmins taking in the game.

Suzuki made a lot of sweet passes that were not converted. Canada lost because they had a coach with an old school mentality and no game changer on the roster. I liked Suzuki's play and thought, game in game out, he was our most consistent player. Wasn't overly impressed with many in the lineup. Other than Glass, and maybe Tippett, I'm happy Habs have Suzuki. He reminds me of Paul Kariya - love his feel for the game and sweet passes. Similar to the Habs, I thought the 2nd PP unit with Suzuki was far more effective than the first PP - and like the Habs Hunter kept giving the first unit 90 seconds on the PP. May have been the weakest D corp Team Canada has had in a long time. Brook was steady but we had no one who could rush on D and people talked about Bouchard's shot but I never saw it. and Bouchard had numerous brain cramps. Is there a franchise that has a better trio in this tourny than Poehling, Suzuki and Romanov?

A lot of focus has been on the coming-out parties of both Poehling and Romanov, but Primeau has quietly been having a very solid tournament as well. The US entered the tournament with three goalies, and no clear cut indication as to who their starter would be. Primeau, Keyser and highly-regarded 2019 draft pick Knight were all seen as possible starters. In the end, the team split the first few starts between the older two in Keyser and Primeau, with Keyser getting the "tougher" games and looking poised to get the nod as the starter. He faltered in the Sweden game and Primeau has taken over the reigns and not looked back. The offensively minded Russians will be one heck of a big test though.

The semi finals are set, and so are our four prospects still alive and playing. Both games are tomorrow, Friday January 4th.
USA (Poehling, Primeau) vs RUS (Romanov) 4:00pm ET TSN
SUI vs FIN (Ylonen) 8:00pm ET TSN
Too bad the USA-RUS game is in the afternoon, as that would be a great prime time game to watch. I will be PVRing it though, as it has the potential of being the best game of the tournament (and it features three of our prospects).
