Brett Lernout signs a 700k with Las Vegas. He's a really strong guy and...um...he's a really strong guy. TT is fascinated by workout rats. Another dud year by TT.....and a reason we're mediocre.

What does Sheehy mean when he says they didn't "negotiate" with other teams? If you talk to other teams then you give them the impression that your client is available. If he had no intention of leaving NY then that's dishonest. I'd have to check his Twitter feed but I don't remember hearing Neil Sheehy ever saying that his client was testing the UFA market ... if he had, fine, I'm just saying I hadn't heard that ... not from him, anyway ... the press sure thought Anders Lee would be available, though ... Elliotte Friedman certainly thought Lee was on the Habs' radar, but he's not Sheehy ... Cheers.

Thanks....by the look of that list, if we are going to add a quality player, it's going to have to be through a trade.

Surprised Gardiner is still out there.
Is he asking too much? I'd be hesitant to give too much term to a guy who turns 29 tomorrow.

Assuming his back checks out, a UFA like Gardiner would be great at 5 x 7 or 6 x 6. I have no idea what his ask is, but 7 x 7 sounds pretty scary for a 29 year old who is probably not be a clear cut #2 d-man in the league.
And there are no forwards worth signing unless Bergevin is determined to move one of the guys already on the team.

I can see Berg being scared off by Gardiner's $$$ and term. His back injury history and his annoying habit of turning over the puck in his end do add a big "buyer beware" to his price tag.
Berg being Berg...I can see him taking a chance on Ben Hutton (LHD formerly of the Nucks) who has decent mobility and a first pass and Micheal Ferland to add some grit and size to the team, and replace Shaw's offense. Ferland does have some question marks around concussion history, but then so did Shaw and Ferland is a much bigger customer. We need an effective big body on the PP.
And I would still try to pry Gusev out of Vegas through a trade. We could actually absorb the year remaining on Clarkson's contract too and sweeten the trade to get something else in return. This could be very like the Armia deal although it could be more impactful if played right.

He's better than Myers imo, and Tyler got 5x6. Myers is more durable, but that's about it.

To Montreal: Gusev + Clarkson + 2020 second round pick (whichever is the higher of theirs and the one they acquired from Pittsburgh) To Vegas: 2020 3rd round pick, lowest of our four 4th round picks, and a player/prospect.* * I'm not entirely sure what they need. They've got some solid forward prospects lead by Cody Glass. They've only got 5 defense on the NHL roster. Do we offer them Juulsen? He'd fill a need on the rhd.

I don't think we would have to give that much back. They key is taking Gusev and not just Clarkson's contract. They cannot afford Gusev's supposed $4M x 2 ask and also sign their last couple of guys. They need cap relief, and we can take it this year and not have to buy the deal out like we did with Mason. You get a guy who has put up great numbers with SKA in the KHL and with the national team. The concern with Gusev is he is not a fast skater, is not the biggest guy, and is more of a playmaker than a shooter. He also is a right shooting LW, and we have a pretty solid top two on LW with Tatar and Drouin (and Domi if we move him back to wing at some point if and when the centre depth is better). However, he is better than any UFA and has legitimate top six skillset and we can likely get him without breaking the bank and selling the future big time (Berg's favourite MO these days).

He's better than Myers imo, and Tyler got 5x6. Myers is more durable, but that's about it. Yeah, that Myers price tag was definitely way overpaid. But that is July 1 for you. Vancouver should have also been able to get Miller for less than a first. I agree that Gardiner is a better defender and much more of what we need. I just think the market will be driving a very high price tag and term for what we would be getting with Gardiner (both good and bad and health question marks).

It's definitely a day where things can go sideways, and I think they'll regret this one. They're paying him 2-3 money and he's not. I'd certainly inquire. If Gusev came in and looked decent, you could potentially move Drouin for that help on D. Or you could flip Gusev.

I'm ok with 7x7 for Gardiner and maybe a bit more. I'll wont choke on the 8x7, if Gardiner does not choke as a #1LHD As it stands, we are worse off by losing Shaw and we are still a bubble team. Worse still, there are teams in our rear view mirror who are loading up.... Not a happy Habs lifer these days......

I think Vegas would be lucky to get someone to give them a cheap kid like Juulsen or a third round pick for Gusev.
Gusev sounds like he has talent, but he is 27 years old with no games played in the NHL.
Remember that Russian Shypachov who signed with Vegas in 2017?
I would be kind of wary giving up much more than a fourth round pick for a guy that may not adapt to the North American game.

Perhaps. They are over the cap. I broke it down as Gusev was the cost for taking Clarkson. Juulsen helps them and we get a second, they save a little face getting a player back at a spot they can use. We get a third for one of our 4ths.

The question with Gusev is, are you getting the next Dadonov... or Shipachyov? One adapted quite well to the NHL, the other... not so much.

That is also why you can likely get him for a third or fourth pick, especially if you also take Clarkson's cap hit off their books (which should give you an additional asset out of the deal one would hope/expect). He was the MVP at the Olympics and has put up great KHL and national team numbers. The potential is there...for both results. I think this is a low risk-high reward move, which is one I would be worth making a small investment in. I expect there is enough interest though from other teams.

Not a typical Benning signing. It actually makes sense. It's only for the same amount Ferland was getting before and the 4 years term is not too long. I can see him on a line with Pettersson and Boeser and fitting in well. Pettersson was taking a lot of late hits and stuff last year, so Ferland will discourage that. And he's a decent enough scorer that he could put up 20-30 goals playing with those guys.

I agree. That is not a bad contract for a 40 point guy who brings a physical presence.
I like Paul Byron and they are different players in almost every way besides their point production. But would you rather have Ferland who is three years younger signed for 4 years/$14 million or Byron signed for 4 years/$13.6 million?
The reality is Benning loaded up last summer with too much expensive fourth line jam. Beagle and Roussel each have three more seasons at 3 million against the cap.

Carolina adds some scoring depth. $3.375M aav seems like a pretty good deal for a UFA that has put up decent offensive numbers. When you compare to what the Nucks just dished out for Ferland.
