That's a smoking deal for a guy who's good at both ends and can put up 50 points. And it makes a direct competitor for those elusive wildcard spots stronger. That battle for the last two playoff spots in the East is looking to be very crowded and far more competitive this year.

Well, Dzingel turned out to be cheaper than keeping Ferland. But honestly I am a little surprised the Canes signed him. Maybe the signs are pointing to Williams retiring.
Regarding the contract, I am not shocked with the dollar amount. Despite the guy being good for 20-25 goals, he has the rep as a floater who avoids contact and frankly does not work hard each shift. If he was a 35 goal guy, obviously the dollars would be there because people are more forgiving of the holes in a high end sniper's game. What I am surprised about is that Dzingel could only get two years. For a guy his age, with his wheels and with relatively light NHL mileage on his body that seems hard to grasp.

Well, here is a UFA (Justin Williams) coming off a really solid season (23 goals) and an outstanding playoffs deciding to "take a break" from the league to start the season.
Sorry, that does not sound like a guy who decided to retire. Reading between the lines, it looks like a 37 year old who just outplayed his contract ($4.5 AAV, $4 million real money in 2018-19) feeling disrespected by the offer Dundon/Waddell made to him.
After all, Carolina agreed to be the burying place for $10 million in cap space (Marleau and Reimer), had to no choice but to pay Aho, signed Dzingel by choice and now they want a guy who led and played as well as Williams to accept half of what he earned.

McKenzie said Williams had multiple offers. My hunch is that he weighed the offers and decided he'd rather wait til January, look at who the contenders are, and sign a one year deal then. He'll be fresh and ready for another playoff run.

For sure, I do not doubt that is what Williams is thinking given what transpired. But for a guy who was the Captain, had a really good season/playoff, and lives in Raleigh, it seems strange that he is not signing a one year deal for $4.5 or $4.75 million with the club that he really helped elevate.
I am sure that there are cap challenged top contenders who would love him to sign at a huge discount, but one can understand why he is probably like why should I do that.
Williams has won Cups and he seemed to relish his role with the Canes. The fact that he is not signed and talking about "taking a break" points to Carolina taking his loyalty for granted and low-balling him. I fail to see how it is good for a 37 year old to be inactive for months. Look at what happened to a 22 year old like Nylander last season who missed camp and the first 25 games of the season, he was supposedly skating in Sweden or Switzerland with some club but he showed up totally out of rhythm.
