The US will still have to trim its roster from 28 to 23, but both Caufield and Harris make the preliminary roster.

I would certainly assume that Caufield makes it. I have little to no idea how Harris stacks up against the other d-men.

Wow, not good news for Olofsson and Sweden. He was playing his best hockey since being drafted too, so he would have been a lot of fun to watch.

Here is the preliminary US lineup for their WJC camp. Caufield with Turcotte and Kaliev is just a downright scary first line. Harris is playing on the right on the third pairing, which is also a good sign that he might make the final cuts. He is playing well in the NCAA right now, so he should have a good chance.

It would be nice to have another prospect receive the accolade of best forward at the tourney.

This is the second pre-tourney game in which Norlinder has been slotted in as the 7th defender. Barring injuries, this may be his role for the tournament. We shall see. This is a darn strong defensive corps for Sweden, even without Boqvist being there. However, I am not as big a Ginning fan as the Swedish coaches. I would have had Norlinder in the top six over him!!

Nice assist by Romanov (#26) in Russia's warm up game against Slovakia yesterday. Caufield also scored against Sweden in that pre-tourney game.

And a bit about Jordan Harris. He sat out USA's first pre-tourney game but is back on the top defensive pairing today against Germany.

Just watched the third period of USA-GER. Final score was USA 7 GER 1. Caufield with four goals and one assist. His shot is lethal. Every shift looked like a scoring chance. Here are all four of his goals.

Don, have you registered for tickets for the 2021 WJC? I have to decide if I want to buy the whole package from the priority draw (you get a few bad games out of it) or wait my chances and try and get individual tickets to games I want to see. Last time it was here, I got the Canada pack and saw all their games. Last year, I managed to watch one game in each of Vancouver and Victoria. We saw Brook, Suzuki, Ylonen, and Olofsson live doing that. I also may consider going to Red Deer for a game depending on what prospects are playing, but that is a smaller rink and tickets will be hard to get. TSN showing every game does help, but there just is something special about the atmosphere of a Team Canada game live on home soil. It is a big year for international hockey here as the Hlinka Gretzky Cup is back in August for all those great draft eligible kids.

Here is Romanov’s secondary assist today. He is #26 playing the high spot on the PP. Big upset as Czechs beat Russia 4-3 thanks to a ton of ill timed Russian penalties. 17 year old super draft prospect Askarov looked pretty ordinary early on and was replaced in the third. Romanov played over 23 minutes today, including over 9 in the first alone.

Russia likely has a roster superior to that of the Czech Rep. However, penalties can be an equalizer and home ice enthusiasm can likewise help. It seems positive and altogether logical that Romanov plays a big time role.

Quiet game from Caufield in a pretty wild back and forth affair. Canada took a number of bad penalties throughout. Gonna have to clean that up. Lafreniere was a force.

Wild first day. Great battle between Czech and Russia. Crazy home town fans go home happy with the upset. SWE comes from behind late to keep their 49 game win streak in preliminary play going by scoring with 4 seconds left in OT on the PP. Another classic wild one between CAN USA. The better team won, but you really need to keep the USA PP off the ice. Lethal.
Nice game by Harris. He played on his off side as the top pairing RHD alongside Samuelsson. Tough assignment for his first Team USA game, but he held his own. Sandelin’s use of Caufield was odd at best. After ripping four goals in the last pre tourney game, he gets moved down with bottom six guys Beecher and Drury. He also got moved to the 2nd PP unit, which barely saw the ice since the top unit scored so quickly most of the game. Get him back with Turcotte, with whom he plays at Wisconsin. They looked great together leading up to this game.
That was a big win for CAN. They are in a very tough group with RUS, USA and home town CZE and relegation GER. You want to finish top two in preliminary to avoid SWE or FIN in the quarters.
Oh yeah, that kid projected to go #1 next summer looked pretty good today. Wowza.

Wowza.Consensus on HF is about the same re Caufield. Feeling is Sandelin put the lines in a blender for some reason. If one game is enough, Lafreniere certainly differentiated himself from Byfield. While he was a small piece of the team last year, that experience is invaluable. I was impressed with Alexis' physical play today. His line really started the turn in the first. After going down 2-0, his line started to set a physical tone with big hits. He had two of note.

Caufield getting very little ice time against the Germans thus far. Yesterday he seemed to get pushed around and knocked down ridiculously easily. Today he stopped skating and watched a 3 on 1 develop for the Germans due to lack of backcheck. This type of tournament requires a 200 ft effort. Pretty disappointing so far. Hope he wakes up and takes advantage of his ice time

Man, Zegras has some great vision and feeds.
Caufield had a decent shift there late in the second. Got one and got a good, but wide, shot off. Then made a nice defensive turnover at his blue line. He needs to keep doing lots of both if he wants to free himself of Ford/Drury.
Germany being lead by great plays from three good draft eligible 17 year olds. First time I have seen those three play. Will watch more Germany games for sure.

Scott Sandelin must still be harbouring some grudge for being traded by the Habs for JJ Daigneault.
