Day three. Our two USA guys get a rest, but the two Euro prospects are back in action. Romanov and Russia against CAN should be a doozie. Norlinder and SWE will try to extend their crazy group stage win streak to 50 games against the Swiss. That streak goes back to 2006. A remarkable feat, although it does bear noting that group stage dominance has not translated into medals as much as they would like. Draft watchers will also be watching the 9:00am GER game to see the trio of Stutzle, Reichel and Peterka. Here is TSN's broadcast schedule for games involving our prospects (they are showing all round robin games): Saturday Dec 28 SUI vs SWE (Norlinder) 1:00pm ET TSN 3 Saturday Dec 28 RUS (Romanov) vs CAN 1:00pm ET TSN 1/4/5

Best comment I have read so far is that the Team USA coach is out there prepping Caufield for a career of playing with Weal and Cousins.

Have been reading a lot of positives on Twitter about RW John-Jason Peterka, GER ...

McIsaac with another booboo. He has made a few in one game plus. I had concerns going into this tournament. There's a significant lack of discipline - and not just with the penalties. I'm not sold on Hunter as a coach in an IIHF tournament. I'm also fearful that this team will be out-skilled. If Lafreniere is out long-term, that's an even greater concern to me.

A couple of Lafs moves reminded me of Beliveau.
I wonder if our first and Caufield pries Lafs? He could be generational.
My other wet dream was Dubois. Those two would make a fine Center duo for a decade snd s half....

Two games in a row that this team came out flat. Against the USA, they found their legs. Today, they never showed up. It gave me a chance to flip and watch Norlinder get his 7th D shifts in. His skating and vision is elite. It will be underwhelming in his role this tourney due to lack of offensive stats, but I like the cut of his jib.

This year’s coaching crew have tons of name recognition. Are they good enough, we shall see. There was something seriously off today. Top to bottom. This tourney is all about momentum with all the teenagers involved. How they respond next game is key. Both the CZE and GER teams are beatable, both both can beat us if they show up like today. GER has been fun to watch. I have watched both their games. Today was a true blast.

I think you ask for trouble when two of your most important players - in this case Lafreniere and Byfield - are draft eligible. I like to have skill guys that have not only been there before, but played a role. I know Alexis was there last year, and it certainly showed against the USA, but having 19 year olds at the event with the skill to dominate is critical imo. I'm just not sure there are enough guys there that fit that idea.

Romanov blasts one in. Trying to get his team back in against the USA.
EDIT: He was Russia’s player of the game today. Fully agree, and not just because he scored their only goal.

Upon Romanov scoring to make it 3-1 usa, Ferraro claimed in a quote attributed to Bergevin that the kid would be making an impact in Montreal next year.
News to me. This is the first I've heard such a definitive assertion.

Caufield with an assist on the opening goal today. I thought he played a much better game today when given an opportunity. Skated hard and much more engaged. His use by Sandelin continues to baffle me. How is this kid not on the first PP squad?

Yeah, Bergevin in his little impromptu press conference in Vancouver sounded optimistic (perhaps overly so) that Romanov wants and plans to come over to North America next summer.
I really hope that he makes the jump because most KHL deals for players his age are two years, which would delay his arrival until the 2022-23 season. But the reality is that I believe that Bergevin would probably have to provide Romanov, his family, and his agent with a word of honour type guarantee that the kid will not play in the AHL. The reason for this obvious, like it or not. In the AHL Romanov is going to be compensated to the tune of $70,000 USD, while on his second contract in the KHL he is likely taking home the equivalent of half a million tax free. Money talks.

So do I, but aside from visits to Russia by Berg it's quiet. They can't announce anything or sign anything. For Ferraro to claim a quote so definitive from Berg is out of character for Berg if true.

Canada with a fairly efficient effort against Germany today. Gave up some chances, but Hofer was strong when called upon. I think he'll get the games from here on out. Nothing flashy, but something good to build on going forward.

Nothing flashy, but something good to build on going forward. They needed a goaltender to step and seize the starter spot. Hofer did that. If not for a rash of penalties late in the game, he gets a shutout. CAN got their confidence back after getting embarrassed by the Russians. They will get Veleno back tomorrow after his suspension and who knows when or if Lafreniere returns. Win tomorrow and they win the group. They control their destiny.

Put him out there with teammates from Wisconsin and the trio finds success. I feel for the Czechs. They've now lost their two best forwards to knee injuries. They're down to 10 forwards if neither are able to play tomorrow against Canada.

Final day of group play. Still a lot up for grabs, like top spot in Group B and the final quarter final spot for Group B. If CAN wins in any fashion, they get top spot and a date with Slovakia. GER and CZE fighting for the last spot. The Czechs taking the US game to OT yesterday was huge. They got an extra point and moved ahead of GER who held the tie breaker due to their win against the Czechs. GER needs at least a point against RUS or else they are fighting the Khazaks for relegation. In Canada’s game, Veleno will be back from suspension. The Czechs will miss key forwards Lauko and Jenik (I have not seen confirmation of his injury status yet). Hofer has to get the start again after being very solid outing yesterday against the Germans. He has 11 of 12 points in B2Bs with Portland this season, so no fatigue issues it would seem. SWE should easily go through undefeated today, to carry on that insane group round winning streak to 52. Only one gold medal in that stretch though....KaBoom. Here is TSN's broadcast schedule for games involving our prospects (they are showing all round robin games): Tuesday Dec 31 SWE (Norlinder) vs SVK 9:00am ET TSN 1/3 Tuesday Dec 31 RUS (Romanov) vs GER 9:00am ET TSN 4/5

That was a textbook hit. Two assists today in addition to his other attributes. Another day at the office for Romanov. Germany misses out on the medal round. I expect they will beat the Khazaks to stay in the top group. They were quite close to making it to the quarterfinals. Sweden wins it 52nd straight in group stage play. Assist #1 from Romanov on the PP. And #2. Both secondary assists playing the top of the umbrella on the PP. Dorofeyev with both the goals. Hmmm, he might have been a good pick.

Romanov’s stats lines from today. I was unaware he was second in tourney scoring from defenders.
