An american team will win the sham lottery... I say the Rangers... Bettman wants a strong New York team... Laffy, Zibanejad and Kakko... pretty strong first line You win. Gorton: "We're blowing it up. We're going to lose for a while and get high picks and prospects and build a winner". Paraphrased of course, Seems to be going well. (With luck, or course...Kakko and now Lafreniere. High picks without being the Red Wings.)

And to add fuel to the fire the guy accidentally dropped the Rangers ball, when loading the machine, before Bettman could confirm the logo. Heavier than the other balls perhaps? streamable.com/g6nqol

Well, that is gross. I guess the only scenarios that would have sickened me more would have been Pittsburgh or Toronto. I would add Edmonton to that list for me. Listening to the Oil fans going on about Laff would lessen the blow of the fact their defence was non existent and they choked as a team big time. Now I don’t have to listen to that all summer and fall. The NYR does seem like a perfect PR situation for the NHL. The Rags gave some nice pieces now. We will be chasing them too in the East.

Rangers moved way up last year. Two years in a row things sound fishy. I wish it was back to the old way.

According to Button this evening:
Lafreniere (Rangers) Byfield (Kings) Stutzle (Senators) Drysdale (Red Wings) Rossi (Senators) Sanderson (Ducks) Raymond (Devils) Perfetti (Sabres) Lundell (Wild) Jarvis (Jets) Holtz (Predators) Guhle (Panthers) Askarov (Hurricanes) Quinn (Oilers) Mercer (Penguins)
Not saying that Button is super accurate most years, but if somehow in whatever order they go off the board those 15 players are gone, who do you pick at #16?

I had the same 15 kids going in the top 15, though not in the order Button placed them this evening.
I like Lapierre at #16 if the red flags are not there inside the medical file because if he is healthy I think he would be the best player regardless of position. I also like Amirov and Reichel and would be very happy to grab one of them, maybe I would give the slight edge to the Russian. Holloway is really a nice prospect and likely safer than those three guys. He just looks like a guy that barring injury will end up playing some role in the NHL for ten years. My only question is whether his ceiling is not particularly high for a club that already has a lot of prospect depth in the organization. If the Habs grab Holloway, my hope is that they see him as a winger who can motor while bringing good skill and some real aggressivity to the table, which in a dream best case scenario becomes something like a Chris Kreider.

I'm not saying the draft was rigged, but between the highly-rated first lottery resulting in a play-in team winning first overall and thus necessitating a second highly rated lottery and that highly rated lottery being won by the team with the largest market in the NHL, well...

So we have reached that point in our regularly scheduled programming… draft talk! Anywhoo, here is my preliminary ranking of those top 8 skaters, and my (current) order of preference. whodathunk wrt the Habs you'd have to start at pick 16? all that work, gone to waste.

Habs still get a good player at 16. Player caliber of a Suzuki, Newhook or Caufield. Who went 13th and 15th in respective drafts. This is good draft for depth. Bourque leading candidate to me unless somebody slides. Caufield was rated 9th last year and slide to 15. Krebs was rated 10th, slid to 17th.

We have no access to Timmins' big board from July, so there is no way to know who Timmins was targeting in the event that the Habs picked ninth. It could have been Lundell, I suppose. However, I think it more likely it would have been Holtz or Quinn.

Holtz, Lundell, Askarov, whomever we were targating at 9, difference between them and Bourque, Jarvis, Amirov isn't worth throwing the series with Pitt for. Like seeing Suzuki and Koktaniemi go head to head with great centers of the game, Crosby/Malkin and winning. That series was good learning experience for our young players.

If we draft 24th, it is quite a difference.

I just don't give that 'Playoff experience" as much weight as I do a higher talent level. Our kids have played well in the playoffs. I really don't think they'd play any differently in next year's playoffs. They are who they are (with the exception that sometimes a player has one bad year). My feeling then is somewhat opposite. You gain very little with playoff experience because the player is going to be the same every year, whereas sometimes there can be quite a difference between a 9 and a 16. The odds say take the better probability. As in poker, in any one hand you could be wrong, but over the evening, you'll win.
Just two different viewpoints, Gnick and you could be right. The Habs may actually get someone better at 16 (or 25, or 31) than they could at 9. Every year, though we do consider the benefit of moving up. If that was meaningless, we probably wouldn't talk about it.

If that was meaningless, we probably wouldn't talk about it. This playoff year is just a step in right direction. One of best way to develop young players are a lengthily playoff. They should mature quicker. Sam Pollock said that many times and why he tried to keep a powerful farm team in Halifax. I don't think we will get a better player at 16. But should get a Newhook, Krebs or Caufield type player. This is a good draft. Lundell, Askarov or Holtz probably be the better player. But not like we are going to strike out in first round. It is not worth throwing a playoff series for. Bourque is who I like at 16 or 24. Slim chance he is there at 24, but good chance he is available at 16. Bourque was coming on before his wrist injury in early February. I thought he was best junior from December to February. Has great hockey sense. Reminds me of a Bergeron. Only smaller, skating not as good and defensively not as polished as Bergeron was at 18. Reminds me more of a Suzuki. Suzuki is same size and needed to work on his defense and skating at 18. Bourque is different player than he was earlier in year and last season. Seemed like he learned from Hlinka/Gretzky and CIBC series.

The WSH third round pick also could move up one if COL loses their series. Those are the last two of 14 picks that could move.

Yup. 12 of our 14 picks have moved since pre lottery and play-in/playoffs. Two of those 12 picks can still move one spot each depending on those results referenced above. I have never seen so much movement in draft picks before. Welcome to 2020.
