Guys...Emergency Act is now around the corner...but with a less offensive name...
The Emergency Act that Trudeau is talking about replaced the War Measure Act in the 80s. It was invoked in both wars and the FLQ crisis.
So, like it or not, it's days, maybe a week away.
Don't fear it. It will allow government to order and/or control any industry that is important.. It can take over facilities quickly without legal delays. I'm not sure how far it goes to suspend personal rights and freedom, but given that they already have done that with restrictions on gatherings, we are already there on personal freedoms. Also spending can be done without a formal budget.
We aren't in Russia or China. Trudeau is hardly the guy shooting a Kalashnikov into the air. Chances are he'd piss into his designer sox at the sound of big boom stick.
So, take it from a guy whose been through a few, do NOT worry about it. It's simply a tool to act quickly.
Viva La Revolution!!!

My wife went to buy baking powder today and found one jar. That's going around to several stores btw. Baking powder. Who the heck bakes anymore today? (Except my wife and me when I make the occasional pancakes for brekky. Yes, I make them from scratch. Not just a pretty face.).

It is good to see some grocery stores dedicating separate shopping times for the elderly and vulnerable. Some are even keeping stocks of high demand stuff (read TP) off the shelves and only accessible to seniors through their customer service desk.
Personally, we have one daughter whose family is in mandated self isolation right now. We are helping to provide them key supplies. It also means she is not at her job for a bit in the health care industry. With an elderly and highly vulnerable parent who lives one province away, one child who is immune compromised and a grandchild with asthma, all the precautions and potential implications hit home. So far resilience, strong mental toughness, mutual support and large doses of non-failing humour are still winning out. That is what will get the population through this, not he/she with the biggest stockpile of toilet paper or ammo.

Quick shout-out to the people working the counters, aisles, and stock-rooms at grocery stores. Usually for minimum wage, and often they're just kids. And yet they don't get no social-distancing, and instead they get the wrath of an angry and scared population demanding to know why such-and-such hasn't been stocked, and what the hell are they going to do about it? I've worked as a waiter, and I can tell you that there is a significant portion of the general population that just suck as people. Not all. Not most. But enough. And they can make somebody's life miserable at the best of times. I can only imagine how bad it might get in the worst of times.
We might have a problem where grocery store workers simply stop showing up to work. Why risk your life to get yelled at, and in some cases actually physically abused, for minimum wage? Screw that, right? And when that happens, THEN you're going to see chaos in the grocery stores.
Be nice people. Be nice.

ALL our lives, we enjoyed going to the washroom in restaurants and never having to encounter people washing their hands. The wash basins were all ours pre and post meal.
This virus is going to ruin that...

That's usually the frontline person that had nothing to do with the decision. Instead of seeking out the decision maker they yell at the person in front of them. There have been a couple of occasions where I have yelled back in that situation. It's satisfying but can be career limiting.

I'm not sure that I am stressed as in more overwhelmed. I started a new job last month that is pretty complex. The guy I replaced wasn't there for the handover, so there has been very little training with the controller of the company. I am the treasurer of a multinational company that needed lots of passwords and access rights set up.
Besides that, my daughter was supposed to arrive last Friday with air Canada but I had to cancel that flight. Air Canada wasn't even picking up the phone, answering mail or texts and the online site to rebook wasn't working. It was one of those cycles with a message to go online and online saying to contact customer service circles. I was finally able to get through 5 mins before the flight was scheduled to depart and received a partial credit for a future flight before dec 2020.
Grocery shopping has been hectic. I went Thursday night and escaped the mass hysteria so I am okay in that sense. I figure toilette paper will be available in 2 to 3 weeks? Lol.
Military wise, I've been in a couple discussion groups with my commanding officer and executive leadership laying out a plan for the next 3 weeks to keep the troops healthy, good moral and to ensure they have things to do to keep making a salary for part time work. There is only so much you can do on line.
On Monday, the company I worked for sent us home for the next two weeks. So working on a tiny laptop isn't the most ideal at this moment but it is going to ensure I keep getting a pay check.
Personal wise, the markets are hurting me financially for my retirement but since i have another 30 years to go i assume they will eventually bounce back. Plus there is nothing i can do now without suffering a big hit. I am more worried about my RESP that i had set up for her college tuition. She'll be tapping into that in 4 years and I am not sure I'll get that all back.
In general, I am just tired of hearing about Corona virus. It is everywhere and its depressing. I get the consequences of what's happening and I feel for everyone. I just think we still have months of this to go and not a few weeks. There are no sports to watch and news has been the same for the past 2 weeks. So its Netflix at the moment when I am not on a conference call or working.
That in a nutshell is my life at the moment. Sorry if it's long winded.

well, as someone whose job is trés people-related, it's pretty lonely. and my wife operates a daycare. strike two. she's self-employed, so no dinero coming in on that end. should be interesting. though speaking of interest, my mortgage comes due this year so the rate shouldn't be too high. and while retirement is closing in, I have a few more years for things to pick up . . . just wish that I could buy while the buying is good. Quick shout-out to the people working the counters, aisles, and stock-rooms at grocery stores. Mrs. Dis works in a pharmacy and, as such, the risk is a tad higher for her (us) ... we've talked about it and we're going what we have to, self-isolation, etc, and if we get it, we get it ... but so far folks have been pretty good at the pharmacy ... I've been there when people are asking about hand sanitizer and while they're disappointed they've been civil ... on the lighter side, what I find interesting are the little differences between Canadians and Americans ... in the US people are lining up for guns *, while in Canada, people are lining up for weed * ... talk about a difference in paradigms ... things are going to get worse in Canada before they get better, but I'm glad we're on this side of the border ... Cheers.

I had to stand in line for ~ 10 minutes just to get into Costco ... they were handing out hand wipes at the door (at least they're doing something, I thought) ... I was standing in line and telling people that the only reason I had cat litter in my cart was that there was no toilet paper left ... that was just enough to give a few somber-looking people a laugh ... be that as it may, I got what I needed and left as soon as I could ... The planet is not the problem, people are the problem and if She wanted to, the earth could shake us off anytime She wants, like a bad surface nuisance ... Cheers.

I saw a meme of us destroying the world and this is the worlds way of taking revenge. In a way it's right. The air pollution has cleaned up significantly. I was in Hong Kong in 2006 and 2007, a month each time. Each time it was just before the Chinese new year. It was amazing to see the air quality change. When I got there, one of the first things I did was to go up to The Peak. Visibility wasn't great, there was a haze all over. 3 weeks later, I went up and visibility was amazing. That was because the factories close down for 2 weeks at the new year, a week before and a week after. I was blown away. I also recall reading about "The Hong Kong Cough" in the paper. A guys said his son had a persistent cough, they went to Singapore for 3 weeks and while there, the cough cleared up.

Wife is "gloves on, mask on, attitude on". I'm designated sniper and driver...lol.
The joke is that we can bunker till the leaves fall....but that is just putting ourselves under house arrest.
So I'm keeping busy by replumbing a building. A building that was suppose to disappear as part of a project and now, i haven't got a clue what will happen to the real estate market.
Last but not least...we always took these thing as conquerable obstacles. Allways outwork and/or outsmart the worse that was thrown at us. Not anymore...
I don't feel in danger or out of control....just helpless. I can't see the fckn enemy to beat it with a thick rebar....i can't outsmart it.....i can't throw any resources at it...other then sit back and wait it out.

The Spanish flu likely originated in Kansas in March 1918. A soldier on a military base was the first case diagnosed. Because the war was on and Spain was neutral, the uncensored press was the first to report on it, so it became the "Spanish Flu".
At least that seems to be the story. Hard to know what's true or not these days.

ANOTHER case of a worthless and probably corrupt UN organization.
The WHO....
What can the WHO officials be charged with? That is what I want to know
Do NOT forget, Taiwan was screening and restricting planes TWO WEEKS EARLIER but China choked that information off and the WHO did not only comply with Chinas wishes, because of China, the WHO did not allow Taiwan a voice on the table.
Worse of all, our Dear Leaderless kept quoting them as a world authority for action, ignoring the obvious Chinese influence and equally obvious incompetence.

I don't understand the kowtowing to China. Countries are afraid of hurting the feelings of a nation that started a deadly pandemic? I cant stand Trump but in this case there is no room for political correctness.
This country is holding 2 Canadians for the last 16 months, blocked canola shipments & lectured us on how to run the country. We're supposed to be polite now?
And whatever you do, don't let Huawei in to the 5G network.
