What goalie would you sign? Assuming one is determined to go outside the organization for a back up, this is a buyer's market. According to TSN pending free agent goalies include Jacob Markstrom, Robin Lehner, Braden Holtby, Anton Khudobin, Thomas Greiss, Corey Crawford, Cam Talbot, Mike Smith, Brian Elliott, Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller, Craig Anderson, Laurent Brossoit and Aaron Dell. And goaltenders on the trade market, including pending RFA with arbitration rights Matt Murray, Marc-Andre Fleury, Frederik Andersen, Henrik Lundqvist, Antti Raanta and one of Columbus’ two golaies, Joonas Korpisalo or Elvis Merzlikins. Most of these goalies are better than Allen, many are no doubt starters but many will not be getting $4.5 million when the dust settles with all the teams struggling with cap space. Why MB is first to wade into the market is beyond me. And who knows, given Crawford and Fleury have won cups and are on their down slope, perhaps they would give a hometown discount to wear the CH jersey before they retire. Bottom line: there were loads of options if one wanted to go outside the organization that would be better than Allen and perhaps even cheaper. But more importantly, I don't think we needed to go outside if MB would finally get some top end talent up front. As I posted at the time of Allen's signing, MB was too quick to sign given the market for goalies. And now we see how he grossly overpaid: Greiss $3.6 million, M. Smith $2 million, Elliot $1.5 million, Lundquist $1.5 million. Holtby $4.3 million, Khudoban $3.3 million, Crawford $3.6 million. AND JAKE ALLEN $4.3 MILLION!! That is absolutely ridiculous money to pay Allen given the market. Heck, even the prize goalie UFA, Markstrom only got $6 million. Yet MB gets Jake for $4.3, and he's a back up. Smith would have been a good fit as I've always said one of the reasons Carey's back ups struggle is they can't handle the puck like Carey so the team is use to Carey corralling the shoot ins and when he's not there the dmen are lost. Smith handles the puck well, and it would be seamless with his in there.

Not that I'm thrilled with extention myself.

I'm more concerned about overpaying Price by 4 million then Allen by 2. Plus...if Price gets hurt, pretty high odds of that, there is a 30 year old that can take the load. Sure, i rather have a cheaper Allen and we will next year, but from the above names, none are as young and can play for the next 3-4-5 years, if need be. Last but not least....im absolutely sure that Bbinz had the same info on who would be available....and perhaps more info on a longer term strategy. Including losing Price....

That's not a regular occurrence, more often than not, he saves the D mans bacon and his rep makes the other team think otherwise about shouting the puck in, if our D stand up at the blueline rather than giving up the blueline, there would be less time spent in the defensive zone IMO.

I have about 6-7 years of GDT where I point out about 2 gaffes a game .... if you haven’t heard me say it before, you haven’t been listening

The more a goalie plays the puck the more chance there is for a turnover. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't play the puck. The players always talk about how big a help Carey is back there. And analysts/writers/talking heads view Carey's stick skills as an asset. I've never heard one say it is a detriment.
And my eye test tells me when I see our backups unable to help our dmen that Carey is contributing to our retrieval numbers. Or maybe MB just always finds backups who cant's play a puck, or save one.

Goalies are a wildcard to me. Hardest to judge. But adding Allen probably Habs best move. In playoffs and start of season shows with rested Carey Price Canadiens are a formidable team. To get him rest, then add size and physical in front of him gives him protection. Having Romanov as 5th defenseman, and Juulsen as 6th defenseman, should be a good defense in front of Price. Teams been taking liberties with him in the past.

Scotty Bowman was on radio other day. Said he use to play Bunny Larocque 25-30 games a season, Dryden around 50-55. Larocque played around 30% of the time.

Scotty Bowman was on radio other day. Said he use to play Bunny Larocque 25-30 games a season, Dryden around 50-55. Larocque played around 30% of the time. Scotty had the luxury of having the best team ever assembled. It was often said back then that it didn't matter who was in net as the skaters were just that good. Bunny had unbelievable winning percentages, including two seasons of 16-1 and 19-2. Has a backup ever had that - certainly not in recent times. Problem CJ has had is that this team is not very good and Carey is their best player. So when he is not at the top of his game we usually lose. And few back ups, including Bunny, are going to be able to play like Carey. Is it a coincidence that our backups over the past few years have been awful, even though many were decent before they got here? Or is it likely that they don't have the team in front of them? Let's see if Allen can break the trend. Of course, it is also possible, as many believe, the Habs now have decent team going into next year so goaltending, including the back up won't be as essential.

Bowman was talking about giving Dryden proper rest. He said one year Dryden came to him and said he had not played at the Forum in over a month. Playoffs were nearing and to be at his best for playoffs he wanted an extra game at Forum.
