Kapanen is back with his regular Liiga club, KalPa, playing 4C today after enjoying double his regular ice time and way better line mates as the 1C with Kärpät for two games this weekend.
Here are his two assists and some highlights from his game on Saturday (over 18 minutes of TOI). He is #59 in dark jerseys (they don’t even have his name on the jersey as he was only there on a short loan). He looks quite good. Quick decision making and decent mobility for playing in the top mens league in the country.

Myšák and Xhejak highlights from yesterday’s game. #19 and #8. Nice cannon from xhejak... I wonder if he is related to the wheel of fortune guy

So the annual Beanpot tourney started tonight with the two semis after a pause for a bit due to COVID. The Habs would have had four prospects playing, but Harvard is without Sean Farrell due to his exciting Olympics experience that is about to begin.
In one semi, Boston University (Tuch) beat Harvard 4-3 to advance to next Monday’s final. They will meet Northeastern (Harris, Struble) who beat BC 3-1. Harris had a primary assist on the third NE goal.

So at least one of our guys will be crowned Champ of the Beanpot. Who should we be hoping for? Our GM has tons of ties to Northeastern so that has to be the team...and we need Harris to sign with us.

I have had at least one Habs prospect to cheer on a bunch of Northeastern teams of late in this mini tourney, so I am going with them again. Primeau, Harris, Struble and the indirect ties with Hughes’ two sons. Their old head coach (and now promoted Athletics Director for the school) was born in Montreal too. Too bad TSN is not showing it this year. They have in the past. They seem to heavily favour Big10 games that they are showing this season.

Injury update on Mailloux from the Free Press reporter who follows the team is he is out 2-3 weeks after suffering a LBI just before Friday’s game. Like 17 mentioned, that sure seems like a groin injury, but without Dr Recchi to confirm, I just will wait and see.
Too bad, he will miss the Knights game that TSN is showing nationally this Friday night.
In news of other big defenders, Guhle went head to head against Bedard today in the Oil Kings “hockey hooky” game that started at 11:00am local time today. Guhle had an assist and was +1 while shadowing #98 pretty well every moment he was on the ice. Bedard had a 1+1 game just because he is Bedard. I love the smell of hockey in the morning.

When you totally blow a break away chance without getting a shot off, and recover and get a top notch primary assist out of the deal. 😝 Xavier Simoneau tonight. Two assists in a Islanders 4-0 win over Quebec.
Myšák with a PP goal and an assist tonight in a 4-2 Dogs victory. 26 goals so far this season!

Marty St. Louis’ son also plays at Northeastern (he was with the NTDP U18 team last year but was not drafted) with Hughes’ two sons and Harris and Struble. If the Habs cannot sign Harris now… lol

And over in Beijing, Sean Farrell had a whopping Olympic debut and made the most of his 11:40 of ice time: three goals and two assists in a 8-0 USA win over China.

Here are highlights from the USA-CHN game. Farrell is #26. If I find one just with his points, I will replace this video later.
That pass for his first assist. No look behind the back. 👨🍳 😚

Last night, Kidney had two assists. The one in the clip shows his nice vision and passing ability.
Overnight, Dichow made his Olympic debut against Russia (that is throwing the kid into the deep end!). He gave up 1 goal on 32 shots but Russia prevailed 2-0 over Denmark. Heckuva game kid.

Pretty damn good for Dichow! Habs have Vrbetic, Dobes and Dichow as 'under the radar' goal prospects. All 3 are progressing well. One can't help questioning the firing of Timmins given the prospects that are floating into the cream section in the last few years. It's possible Churla had something to do with that, but man, Joshua Roy, Sean Farrell, Kidney, Guhle and a few more lesser lights, all taken in the last 3 years. If (and yup, it's a big IF) they all make the team (Guhle is a given and probably Farrell too), this turnaround may take a couple of years less than we think.

A couple of updates from Sweden today.
I have to admit that getting moved to an Allsvenskan team part way through the season seemed like the final straw with Olofsson, especially with his rights expiring this summer. However, he seems to have embraced his new role and new team. He had another goal and an assist today in Björklöven’s 4-0 win. That is now 9 points in 11 games since the move. I am not sure if this is enough to resurrect him from the dead, but it is still nice to see for his sake.
The SHL has resumed play after a very long COVID pause. Norlinder was in the lineup for Frölunda but rather surprisingly was the 7th D. He usually sees top or second pairing ice time. He did not have any points today.
In Russia, Kostenko went pointless today in a Khimik 5-1 win. It is nice to see him gets lots of ice time against men in the VHL. Not all teenage Russian players are so lucky. At first I was a little concerned that he did not stick with Spartak in the KHL. But, now with the KHL cancelling the rest of their season and going straight to playoffs, he will actually benefit from more hockey and more development time while still playing against men this season.

Sherbrooke came back from a 4-0 deficit for the first time in franchise history to win 5-4. Roy had three assists and was third star in the comeback.
Vrbetic stopped 37 of 39 in a 4-2 win.
Dobeš lost a close one 3-2 to Minnesota in which Rhett Pitlick picked up two assists.
Guhle scored his 6th is a 4-0 Oil Kings win, a big divisional tilt with Red Deer.
Biondi popped his team leading 12th goal in a 4-2 loss to Denver. Stapley was held without a point though for Denver.
Struble had an assist for Northeastern.
Farrell had an assist in the USA 4-2 win over Canada at the Olympics.

Some action last night.
Kapanen keeps moving about as he was playing with his Mestis team yesterday (second league). He scored a PP goal in a 3-2 win. He got to play 3C alongside his cousin Kansto.
Gorniak had a good night in a 5-3 Wisconsin win. He had a goal and two helpers.
Younger Pitlick has been getting more ice time and has been getting more points too. He scored two goals (a NCAA first for him) against Dobeš and Ohio State. Dobeš made 40 saves but gave up five and was pulled half way through the third. The Gophers seem to be his kryptonite as he lost 3-2 on Friday night and 5-1 last night. His D sure give up a ton of shots every night though. Very Habs like.
Biondi and Stapley went head to head and each had an assist in a 3-2 UMD win to get the split against Denver. Biondi’s helper was a result of good work in front of the net on the GWG.
Guhle had an assist in the Oil Kings 5-3 win in the Hat.

Kostenko had an assist in Khimik’s 4-3 loss today.

A video scouting report by Draft Dynasty (Yannick St Pierre) on Emil Heineman prior to the 2020 draft (in which Florida snagged him in the second round at #43). Yannick no longer does free you tube videos because he is now the video scout for the Habs.
Hughes talked about players that play and think the game fast. This kid sounds like he fits that model.
Welcome to the Habs prospect thread, Emil.

More Heineman highlights. Oh, and I had him on my 2020 draft list that I posted on the 2020 draft thread. Cool! Just went back to check because I thought he was on my radar (although memory is not getting any better lol).

thanks NWT. He seems to have a heavy shot and he surprised goalies a few times with the release as well. He has a long stride too, which usually means he's going faster than he looks. Anyway, while he may not be an A prospect, it looks like he's better than a B. It also bodes well that he was a Florida pick. They've been reasonably good. Lundell was the guy they drafted in the first round that year.

0-0 after two periods and it is not like the goalies are standing on their heads. Not to be overly critical, eh, but this Beanpot Final is a microcosm of what I do not like in general about NCAA hockey. There is not enough offensive talent or creativity to break down the heavy emphasis that is placed on systems and defensive structure.

Not to be overly critical, eh, but this Beanpot Final is a microcosm of what I do not like in general about NCAA hockey. There is not enough offensive talent or creativity to break down the heavy emphasis that is placed on systems and defensive structure. I have watched a lot of Northeastern games over the last recent while watching Primeau, Harris and Struble. They used to be a lot more entertaining under Coach Madigan and with the personnel they had in the past. This current team struggles to score and is a bit boring to watch. Last night’s Beanpot final was a defensive struggle for the most part, which quite frankly was a bit of a snoozer. Tuch finally awoke in the third, once he got back to his game of moving his feet and being physical. Harris played a ton all night and was gassed on the only goal. Going down on that two on one was not a great move in hindsight due to how well BU actually executed that play. It is time for him to move into pro hockey and see how he does at the next level. Hopefully with the organization that drafted him! Struble is just recently back from injury (yup, another one), but he plays a mobile and physical game on the second pairing. He plays a more controlled physical game now and does not get caught out of position going for the big hit all the time like when he first joined the NCAA ranks.
