I watched videos from his Hamilton games and I knew that in previous international call-ups his country used him at centre, probably because in recent years the Czechs are not flush with talent in comparison to the past. But no, I have never seen Mysak play in person.
I am trying to think of a NHL comparable for Mysak. I guess the off-the-charts dream scenario is that he becomes a Fiala type or another optimistic take would be that he develops into a Hoglander style winger.

The QMJHL has started some rookie camps already, with main camps starting this week or next. We should start to see some of our four Q prospects getting some pre season game action in a while. All three CHL leagues start early October-ish (the Q on Sept 30, OHL on Oct 7 and the Dub on Oct 1). I am looking forward to seeing the new coverage on TSN/CBC/RDS.
The U20 Four Nations tourney featuring Myšák, Kapanen and Kostenko starts on Thursday until the weekend, so we shall see how those lads do against their age peers.
Still no word on the dates for Habs Rookie camp, although news of some of the invitees has been popping up on socials since the draft. I expect it will be too late for most Euro based guys to show up as their pre season is already started (Norlinder will be at camp though). NCAA camps could very well be started too depending on the dates. The NCAA also has sticky rules about their players attending pro camps. Development camps seem fine (if the player pays their own way), but the Habs are not having one this year, just the Rookie Camp ahead of main camp.

Myšák with a goal and two assists, and wearing the C, as the Czech U20 beat Sweden U20.
Kapanen was also on the winning side as Finland beat Russia 3-0. Kapanen was on the ice for all three goals for, started on their top line and played on the top PP and PK units. Here is his goal today.

Kostenko with an assist in a 3-1 Khimik (VHL) win today.
The Q teams are starting to add their vets to their pre season lineups. Riley Kidney and Joshua Roy saw their first action today. Roy went without a point but Kidney had three assists in a 6-5 win. The magic that he had feeding MacArthur is the playoffs last year picked up where they left off, as two of his helpers were on MacArthur goals. Kidney also went 12 for 19 on the face off dot.

Kostenko played his third game in three nights with Khimik (VHL) today in a pre season tourney hosted by Dynamo St Petersburg. I watched parts of all three games. Here is his assist from today. He also had an assist two games ago. You definitely see both the good and the bad with him, or at least I did. He seems pretty decent with the puck and he is mobile. He makes decent decisions on when to pinch or jump into the play. He seems to float a bit though, and needs to engage defensively quicker for my liking. Take the guy out and close the gap.
His skating and edges are okay, but he lacks explosiveness that should come with strength as he looked really lanky out there. In one game, he did jump and get into a scrap in response to a hard hit on one of his team mates. Intriguing prospect with an interesting upside, if he can get it all together and work on his weaknesses. He could also flame out if he doesn’t improve on his flaws too.
He is #81 in those yellow jerseys.

Ex-prospect already, but just to share some uplifting news, Joni Ikonen was the scoring leader for Ilves in the Finnish Liiga pre-season by notching 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 games.
One can easily see that the cruel injury history has an impact on his footspeed, but the vision and especially his great release have gone nowhere. I personally expect Ikonen to have a slot in Ilves' top-6 this season.
Quick translation to Ilves' head coaches comment on Ikonen:
"Anyone who has a slightest clue of Joni's history is really pleased to see that how well he is performing at the moment. Joni is working really hard every day to reach his talent. He's been one of the most positive players for us by his performance as well as by his story."

I have been actually keeping tabs on Joni in the scoresheets this pre season, so have noticed that he has been off to a much better start (and hopefully finally a healthy season). I always liked him as a prospect (great shot) and hope this is a sign he can stay healthy and put up some decent points. Missing almost 2.5 years of key development to all those injuries was just brutal though. As a bit of a segue here, Ikonen scored the first goal yesterday against KalPa, featuring prospect Oliver Kapanen. Kapanen was playing second line winger after coming back from his stint in the Czech Republic with the U20 team at the Four Nations. Ilves won the game 2-1 and Kapanen was held without a point. It should be good development experience for the recently turned 18 year old to play regularly in Liiga this season. He is definitely in the running for a shot on the WJC team as well, which would be great experience as well.

Norlinder with an assist in Frölunda’s 4-3 Champions league win today. He is wearing that blue backed jersey (?).
Kapanen also had his first Liiga pre season assist today too. Their regular season starts in a week.
The KHL started this week, and the VHL will follow shortly, so look forward to see how Gordin and Kostenko do with their respective teams.

The goaltender Dichow is definitely an obscure prospect who saw his first pre season action with his Allsvenskan team Kristianstads yesterday and came away with a clean slate. He might have received a bit more exposure last season had the OHL played, as he had signed on to come over for Sudbury. Instead, he played limited action in a low level Euro league (at home in his native Danish league).

I have no idea what is going on with Jacob Olofsson, but after playing a regular two six role for Timrå last season, he is falling off a cliff on the depth chart in the pre season this year. He did get the first games in the top six, then he was on the fourth line, then was out of the lineup last game, and is being used as the 13th forward today. Injury? Falling out of favour?
Anyway, this is his final season to show he is worth an ELC with the Habs. Needless to say, early signs are not in his favour.

Building on the Olofsson post, one may ask which prospects need to be signed by next summer or else the Habs lose their rights? Four actually.
Jacob Olofsson (Sweden) Jordan Harris (NCAA) Brett Stapley (NCAA) Jack Gorniak (NCAA)
Olofsson has to be signed by June 1st, with the college kids by August 15th. Right now Harris is the only slam dunk to get an offer. Let’s see what happens over the season though.

Gordin with a goal in the MHL today. Nice steal and nice backhand finish. Maybe he even got a little quicker since last year (not hard).

Dmitri Kostenko and Khimik opened their VHL regular season today. Kostenko had two assists in the win.
Gordin was held off the scoresheet in a 2-1 SKA-1946 2-1 loss today. These last two games were the start of the regular season for the MHL team. His VHL team starts soon.
Olofsson was back on the second line today in Timrå’s last pre season game. Their regular season opens on Saturday.
Dichow got his second straight pre season win with his Allsvenskan team. Regular season should be up soon/next.

Our Q quartet all saw action yesterday, including a head to head with three of them. Kidney with a 1+1 game, Trudeau with two helpers, Simoneau with an assist and Roy had Sherbrooke’s only goal in their game.
All pre season still.

Norlinder played a stinker of a game in Frölunda’s season opener, but now gets to head to Montreal for the start of rookie camp. A discussion with his defensive coach provides some decent insights into his strengths and where he still needs to work on his game. He is still young and learning.

THAT is Weber 2 in the making. All he had to do is take seven extra double handers to the rib cage. Oh wait, that was his teammate. I can see the kid getting razzed by Edmy/Savard/Chiarot and saying "he's hard to stop? Hold my beer".
