Habs Rookies drop a 4-3 game to Sens last night in Ottawa. Goals form Trudeau (84), Norlinder (59), and Myšák (53). Norlinder also had an assist. Joshua Roy had a nice assist of the last goal. Vrbetic gets his first game in ages on net and is tagged with the loss.
Habs play again on Monday against the Sens and Tuesday against a CIS all-star team.

Some prospect news/reassignments after the close of rookie camp.
Kidney and Trudeau were sent back to their junior clubs. Roy, Simoneau,Vrbetic, and Sobolev all are going to main camp as part of Group C…essentially juniors, AHL guys and tryouts. I was impressed with Joshua Roy in the rookie games I saw. His skill is definitely there, and he has a decent shot and pretty good passing/vision. He seems much quicker than advertised, but he has also been working out hard and has lost a bunch of weight as his conditioning was very poor in the past. Interesting kid to watch and track his development.
Two rookie camp invites were named to the main camp roster. Goalie Alexis Gravel (Halifax Moosehead grad) is likely invited as a possible goalie with the 3R ECHL team. Defender Arber Xhekaj (JAKE-aye) was actually quite noticeable in his rookie games. Decent size, mobile and physical. A real no nonsense defender who stood up for his mates and even dropped the mitts a few times. He was Hamilton’s most improved player and played a half season with Myšák with the Bulldogs before Covid shut down the OHL. A Hamilton kid with an Albanian dad and Czech mom, thus the cool name.

Oh, and just for giggles, here is Roy’s goal from the 5-3 win yesterday against the USports all stars that actually included ex prospect Scott Walford (McGill University). The only other goal by a prospect was the ENG by Guhle. The three others were from invites who have since been released/returned. Gianni Fairbrother had a pair of helpers.

North American prospects are about to see some regular season action soon as leagues start up.
The USHL opened up its regular season this past weekend. Unlike last year with lots of Habs prospects to follow in the USHL, this year the Habs only have one in Jack Smith with Sioux Falls. He was held without a point in his opening two matches.
The Q opens at the end of this week. The four prospects all have season openers between Friday and next Tuesday. Kidney, Roy, Trudeau and Simoneau are all back with their junior clubs now.
The OHL opens on October 7th, just prior to Thanksgiving. Vrbetic is back with his club but Myšák is still at camp with the Habs, but could be back with Hamilton prior to the season starting. Surprisingly, Sobolev is still at camp with Group C. I expect the Habs will assign him to Windsor soon though.
The WHL opens this Friday. Guhle is still at main camp and I expect he will get a decent look. He likely will miss his junior team’s season start.
The NCAA has a slate of exhibition and non-conference games next weekend. Harris, Struble, Tuch, Pitlick and Dobeš should all see some action next weekend. The others (Gorniak, Stapley, Biondi, Farrell) will have to wait a bit longer.

Skilly's wet dream...tons of our prospects enrolled in NCAA. True, but they did not add any this past draft which surprised me (pleasantly) that Timmins and company did not go back to the US for any draft picks. I had a bunch of USHLers that I really liked for possible picks, but they fell in between Habs picks.

Some season start dates for NCAA regular seasons. The exciting Harris/Struble combo start on Saturday. Farrell is still a month away, as the Ivy’s play a shorter season.

This would have been a great matchup to see, if the guy in green was not busy impressing folks at training camp. Guhle vs Bedard will have to wait until later in the season.

Two Euro prospects in action today. Kostenko played over 15 minutes and was held pointless in a 4-3 win. I watched a bit of the game, and he looked fine out there. After a long break between games, Timrå played again and Olofsson had an assist in a 5-3 win. He has 3 points (1g 2a) in 4 games to start his SHL season. Kapanen is still injured and so is Gordin, so nothing from them in a while. Dichow has started one of his team’s two Allsvenskan games, with him losing their season opener 2-1.

Some CHL action last night. Yeah! All Q prospects were in action.
Simoneau had a goal and two assists and was the game’s first star. His team mate Trudeau had an goal and the third star. Kidney had an assist in his game and was 60% on faceoffs. Roy was held without a point but had 7 shots on goal and was +1 in a 3-2 loss.
Sobolev played in Windsor’s pre season game last night. No points.
Kapanen returned from injury yesterday and had an assist playing for KalPa junior team. Looks like they are easing him back in before he goes back with the Liiga squad.

Kapanen played on the U20 KalPa team again today for the second in two nights. He played 21 minutes, was 67% on faceoffs, and had an assist.
Olofsson was on the 2nd line wing ( he has been on both wings this year) and was held without a point but played 15 minutes of ice time.
A bunch of CHL, NCAA and one USHL games involving prospects today. Hockey is back!

The Habs do not often sign invitees out of rookie and main camp to deals, but the 20 year old Hamilton native gets an ELC. The Habs have also assigned him to Kitchener Rangers of the OHL for his overage season. He has not played in about a year and a half, so he should get big minutes with Kitchener.
As a 20 year old, his ELC does not slide a year with him being sent to the OHL, so a year will burn off this season. Players on ELCs who are under 20 like Myšák and Guhle can still have their ELCs slide this season as long as they don’t reach the NHL games played cap.

This is a real feel good story. Xhekaj was undrafted in both the OHL and NHL, worked at Costco during the pandemic to help pay for training and ice time, and now inks an entry level deal with the Habs. I like giving this kid who is still developing and growing a deal rather than a 31 year old Goloubef, who has since been released form his PTO. seventeen I guess it is time to have to learn how to spell his name lol. It is also pronounced Jack-aye.

I heard an announcer explain the pronunciation a week ago or so. I wonder if it really isn’t more like “shack-eye”. Regardless. I’ve always had a high regard for Costco employees. Hired one years ago and it worked out well.

And in Europe yesterday, both Kapanen (still with KalPa U20 team) and Olofsson ended their nights with one assist. Kapanen has been a ppg pace with his junior team since returning from injury. Hopefully he gets recalled back up to the Liiga squad soon. Olofsson now has 4 points in 7 SHL games. He played 17 SHL games last season and only managed two points, so he is already enjoying more offensive success this young season. It is a contract year for Olofsson as his rights expire this summer, so we shall see what the Habs do.
An interesting note that Kapanen played over 25 minutes in his game. Quite the crazy workload for a forward.

Joshua Roy had a pair of goals in Sherbrooke’s win yesterday. He now has 7 points (3g 4a) in his first 4 games. Interestingly enough, the other two forwards drafted from the Q this past draft (Kidney and Simoneau) also have 7 points in their first 4 games. Some nice starts. Simoneau is an overager though.
Roy can shoot da puck, man!

In other action, Windsor loses in a shootout but Sobolev records his first assist and OHL point. Vrbetic got the win in a 30 save effort in North Bay’s 3-2 victory. Simoneau had an assist on Charlottetown’s only goal in a 3-1 loss today. Trudeau had no points.

Roy had an assist on the GWG in OT tonight.
Guhle had two assists in PA’s 3-2 win tonight. Both look the same. Get your low shot on net and good things happen. Both tipped in front by the looks of things. #6 in white.

Here is Roy’s assist last night. He and Parent have some serious chemistry going this season already. That is a really nice play and sublime pass for the assist.
