I'm shocked. Juraj must be the guy they think can be a top flight winger and deal with the Montreal media.

A lot of I deserve to be number 1 in his interviews and his answers seem rehearsed. I still would of picked him though.

They're not super impressed with Dach either.
I'm not trying to be a downer - this is definitely a "time will tell" kind of night - but everybody kept saying that Bergevin ignored the advanced stats, and Hughes was going to be so much more enlightened in that area. Hired a bunch of people and firms and all that. And yet...

AG, KK... all had the same feel. Next year, Ottawa or Boston will win the draft and we'll be further down the division. frustrating.

Sometimes you can overthink it. I hope they didn’t try to be too cute and play the 3 quarters for a dollar type move. Pick Slafkovsky and then deal for a stalled former top prospect in Dach to fill the role of Wright and come out ahead. We’ll see. I was a big fan of the Gorton/Hughes hires and I think they hit a home run with St. Louis but I have a bit of a sick feeling. Sometimes you make the safe choice and move on to the next decision. Don’t have to solve a bunch of problems in one draft. I hope they didn’t reach too far on these moves.

What do the analytics people say about the other top picks? If would be good to have a comparison rather than just worry about the decisions made.

The only solace I can take is MacKenzie had it as almost 50-50 with the scouts. So it's not an off the chart pick.

The “problem” with Wright was that he was the consensus number one pick in 2022 since he has been 14 years old. They’ve had 3-4 years to pick apart his game. Slafkovsky came on the scene and was ranked mid top ten , then had a good two tournaments against non NHL players mostly and scouts suddenly felt he could play against men. Let’s remember Josh Anderson was Canada’s best player. You think he even makes that team in a regular non COVID year??

Very true. This is not Milbury picking Dipietro. And 2 other teams passed on Wright, as well. The Devils wanted Slafkovsky. They didn’t need a center I’m not surprised Arizona passed either, it’s freaking Arizona

Don’t have to solve a bunch of problems in one draft. I hope they didn’t reach too far on these moves. The pessimist in me says that Hughes got too cute, and wanted to put on a show. Made moves he didn't have to make, but made them for the splash. Gave up a solid player in Romanov, and a pretty sure bet in Wright, for a winger who at best was ranked equal to Wright, and a home-run swing in Dach. Like I said before, Romanov and Wright for Slafkovksy and Dach. The optimist in me says this is an all-in draft day for Hughes, and if it works, it will work spectacularly. If Slafkovsky is in fact the next Tarasenko, a 40 goal power forward, and if Dach finds his form like Couturier did and becomes a massive two-way presence down the middle, capable of putting up 60-70 points while being a great defensive forward, and if Guhle and Harris make us forget Romanov as early as next year... then this is brilliant. There are a lot of ifs there, but they're not unreachable. Ignoring the analytics many scouts love Slafkovsky and view him as a legitimate first overall, and Dach is still so young. If Kotkaniemi isn't finished as a prospect, then Dach isn't finished either. And I think it's a pretty safe bet that Guhle and Harris will be as good if not better than Romanov. So there is hope here. Maybe even a lot of hope. But it sure was a lot of gambling that I didn't think needed to be made.

Time will say. Hockey is debatable but for me Wright will have a much more productive NHL career than Dach. And considering that championship teams win through strength down the middle (top two centres and top three or four d-men), Montreal needs Slafkovsky to be 5x more impactful in the NHL than Romanov will be.

I’m glad you mentioned Kotkaniemi cause that’s who came to my mind when I looked up Dach’s stats.
Dach had 23 points, 10 points and 26 points in his first 3 years (as a 19,20,21 yr old)
Kotkaniemi had 34 points, 8 points, and 20 points in his first 3 years (as a 18,19, 20 yr old)
I’m not sure who Dach’s wingers were but looking at the scoresheets last year he had time with Kane, Debrincat, Hagel, Johnson, Entwhistle
In other words, it seems he had better wingers than we have
So depending on how you feel about KK, you might like or hate this deal. Or how you feel about quality of linemates, you might like or hate this deal.
But from a pure statistical analysis, I think we took the biggest of gambles when we didn’t have to

I'm not mad we traded Romanov as I think he has peaked performance wise. I just think we could of done better with Wright #13 and #26.

If last year we drafted Ben King in the 7th round and he responded this year with 52 goals and 53 assists, would we be disappointed? Of course not! We would be ecstatic with his performance and our selection. Pick him ASAP. We have the number one pick tomorrow, don't blow it!

Also 2020-21 was the Covid year so that might have had an effect. And as a final thought Chicago might have rushed him to the NHL without some time at the AHL level to learn the pro-style game. I think the Habs did that with KK which didn't help. Just some thoughts.

I loved Romonov but has he already reached his ceiling?…..he’s a fringe 4 IMO so even if Dach becomes a very good 3C down the road think it’s worth the risk if he’s a good 2 even better….obviously if the D kids on fringe project out it’s a good deal. I like the aggressiveness…let’s see it’s not all about next year and they didn’t kill themselves today whatsoever. Lots of things to come potentially.

I'm not mad we traded Romanov as I think he has peaked performance wise. I just think we could of done better with Wright #13 and #26. Maybe. But the Habs plan as Gorton & Hughes said before the draft was to have a mix of rookie picks and some players that had had development time. Which is what happened. As for Slapovsky he has played in a men's league & had a good Olympics & dominated against not the NHL's best players. But something to keep in mind is that all NHL teams are not composed of elite talent. The top teams have 5 or 6, the majority of the teams in the league not that many. So if Slap plays against a checking line he's already had experience with some of those guys. More random thoughts. Cheers

D-men generally need 200-250 games in the league to mature sufficiently to reach something that approximates their peak. I think the Islanders will likely have a significantly more polished version of Romanov than the one we enjoyed.
But, really, the issue is not Romanov. It is Slafkovsky. For me he needs to be far and away the best player involved in all of Hughes' machinations this evening. Because if he is not, Montreal may ultimately have run the train off the tracks. If Gorton and Hughes just fell for Kakko 2.0 then the future is going to be hard to swallow.

After tonight:
Pros:
Bigger top 6
lots of potential.
Young 1 - 2 center combo with different skill sets
Solidified our top 6
Cons:
Weakened our already bad defense
Created a pissed off and now has a chip on his shoulder Wright who will be a pain to play against
Uncertainty on players upside
Possible weakness in center position
Greater chance of bust potential

Slavkovsky could turn into a fine 30-30 man too, but if he's that while Wright becomes a Tavares type #1 center, it's still a loss for us. Slavkovsky needs to be a dominant forward, whose line is automatically the #1 line. Hughes mentioned his interviews with Slavkovsky and they seem to have made the difference. Let's hope he's a good judge of character. I have to wonder if there were negatives about Wright that they didn't mention but that weighed in the balance. If Lecavalier was saying this kid can't deal with pressure and will choke, that counts for something too.

PTH, you are right. There is a scenario where Slafkovsky is way way better than Kakko, but his career gets judged against the possibility that Wright literally turns into something very close to Bergeron or Tavares.
The future is impossible to know. But I just feel Gorton and Hughes elected to navigate a riskier path into the future.
