Not surprisingly, Myšák named one of Czechia’s three top players of the tournament. IMO, he was consistently their top player from start to this point. He will be at rookie camp in less than a month. Crazy year.

Read that Roy logged the most ice time among forwards for Canada with over 23 minutes.

The medals for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship will finally be awarded today. Four of the Habs’ five participants are guaranteed a medal and Jan Myšák will earn a bronze if Czechia beats Sweden.
My predictions are:
🥇 🇨🇦 🥈 🇫🇮 🥉 🇨🇿
Bronze medal game 🇨🇿 (Myšák) vs 🇸🇪 2:00pm MT (4:00pm ET) TSN
Gold medal game 🇨🇦 (Roy, Kidney) vs Finland (Kapanen, Nurmi - out with illness) 6:00pm MT (8:00pm ET) TSN

Myšák gets an assist after a big faceoff win on the PP for Czechia’s only goal. They fall 3-1 to Sweden, who win bronze. My predictive abilities need work!

Joshua opens the scoring. And almost potted another on the next shift.

My views on Dave Cameron as a coach have not changed today, unfortunately. You get five straight PPs in the second, you play your top guys for almost the full two minutes each time, and you get next to no good chances. Keep doing the same ineffective stuff over and over. Finland then totally took over the game. Off to OT. Full momentum for the Finns. Cameron, not good enough. Reeks of Julien and Ducharme.

It obviously wasn't working and he didn't move anybody out. Change it up. No sign of Roy, no sign of Dufour. Too much dipsy doodle. You could see this setting up a mile off. Finland has played heroically. Powerplays have all been for Canada. How about the Habs have a look at this Jutkola. His post to post movement is outstanding

This tournament never disappoints. MacTavish sure is something.
Happy with how Roy played, he's a steal in the 5th for sure. Not sure Kapanen was worth a 2nd but he had a good tournament in a shut down role, smart at both ends of the ice
Mesar looked good as well. Lots of scoring mixed with great leadership. He was the man for Czechia and relished the role

That McTavish goal line save will be part of WJC history and infamy for ages. What. A. Play.
Anyway, I expect Roy, Kidney and Kapanen should all be back in four months in Halifax/Moncton. There are other prospects that could be in the mix too like Slafkovsky, Mešár, Rohrer, Beck and Hutson. Engström is part of the group vying for the U20 lineup for next four nations for Sweden, but that Swedish defense is always so stacked.
Four of the prospects get medals: Roy/Kidney🥇and Kapanen/Nurmi🥈. Pretty good summer for a few of the lads, and Myšák can hold his head high for a very good tournament as well.

Is Slafkovsky slouching? If not, then Guhle and Xhekaj are huge. If both make the Habs down the road, you don't want to be a right winger.
What's great is that they managed to get together. The 'team culture' is already prepping itself.

Supposedly the numbers that come out of the combine are accurate, so yes if Slafkovsky were not slouching he would be as tall as the other big boys there. Xhekaj does not look like a kid who just finished Juniors. Those are serious pipes.

I know it may not be a totally reliable source for atuff like this but hockeydb.com has Guhle at 6'2 and Slafkovsky and Xhekaj at 6'4.

In this thread I’m suggesting neither I’m merely pointing out that the winner of the player of the year in Slovak Hockey, IMO, did not have as good a year that many believe he did. I would bet apples to doughnuts that if the Olympics and WCs were not each countries C and D teams that Juraj probably ends up winning player of the year anyway. Even if they didn’t medal in the Olympics and his production was low in the two tournaments and he was picked #2 overall. Would I have selected him? Probably not. We have had dozens of debates on this forum on when there isn’t much to separate forwards you should pick the center; we’ve also had discussions on how trading for centers is hard, you have to draft them. This about face on those ideas, based on Wright’s entitlement because he stated he believes he deserves to be #1, and Hughes’ public comment that Slaf answered a draft day question remarkably well has me trying to figure things out too. That question? What is your favourite moment in hockey? Slaf’s answer? Being on the ice when up or down by 1 goal. I’ll be rooting for Slaf. I don’t think the pick was bad. Just if you are in love with the Slaf pick you really can’t complain about centers anymore. Well you can. But Slaf will always be brought up (especially if Wright pan out) Interesting. If what you describe was the case, then the selection process was clearly flawed. However, I read a different version — I do not have the reference. What I read was that in multiple interviews the Habs team described to each player the perceived positives and negatives of their respective game. With Slafkovsky it was an intelligent discussion of how he needed to improve. With Wright was only defensiveness, pushback and a refusal to admit to his flaws. Thus it was decided that without this acknowledgement, Wright would not develop and coaching him would be difficult. That was what sealed the decision. If true, unfortunate, speaking as one who favoured his selection. As the year progressed the gap between Wright and the other potential first overall picks diminished greatly until there was no longer a gap. With that in mind I put a lot of weight into soft skills. Those skills that are tough to teach. I don't care if Wright is a center because if he does not have the soft skills to adapt, learn, be a team player etc.... then it doesn't matter what position he plays. I saw several signs over the year leading up to and during the draft that gave me the impression that he might not be teachable, doesn't adapt quickly and might not be a team guy. That's not the guy I want to build a team around. Conversely, I loved what I saw with Slaf's soft skills. I hope for the best for both of these kids but I saw a lot of warning signs with Wright. Time will tell........

I replied to a tweet about Josh Roy, where I compared him to Andrew Shaw.
He reminds me of Andrew Shaw. Both have really good hands in tight. Neither is an exceptional skater but good enough. Shaw a more likely scrapper but both willing to go to dirty areas. Roy probably will be a better scorer.
I got a 'like' out of it, which was a bit surprising for an innocuous comment and was pleasantly surprised when I saw who it was....Shawz15er, Andrew Shaw himself. Maybe I should have been more polite about Roy probably ending up a better scorer, but what the hell.

That is cool.
Shaw did have good hands around the net, which made him a viable middle six winger. However, Shaw probably would have carved out a NHL career even without the decent mitts he possessed because he was just so hyper-competitive and such an effective agitator that any team in the league would have seen value in a guy like him on the fourth line.

Looking at their builds, X looks biggest and probably heaviest, Ghule and Slaf look like they have some room on their builds. Mesar forgot his growth hormones! Remember huge Pierre Bouchard? He was a nasty piece of work and X is reminding me of him. Not going to get the points but nobody is going to mess with any Habs. Remember the days of Habs Midgets? It's a distant memory. Here's X doing a lot of eady pin knocking!

Physically he looked like a man among boys in those OHL clips. Clearly Xhekaj relishes the physicality of ice hockey and that augurs well because not all big guys like to throw the body around. Of course, hitting in the NHL is also dependent on having great timing and the attitude/swagger that goes along with executing search and destroy missions. The family of the one of the boys my son plays with is from Kitchener and they have remarked that Xhekaj moves well for a 6'4" 225 man, but time will say whether he can read and react at the level necessary to blow up NHLers. However, if nothing else, a beast like him will be a goalie's best friend because he can dissuade opponents from parking in the crease and going into corners.

I liked a lot of things about Xhekaj’s game. He is strong in the offensive zone. What he should work on is positioning and decision making in the D zone. Hopefully he can be coached on that and improve.
