Peterborough finished off London 2-1 today. That’s a big single finger to Dave Branch.

From what I saw of Mailloux today (about half a game) he looked ok, but nothing that would make me think "he's the best prospect in the Habs system. I certainly like Hutson better. I didn't see Mailloux pressured enough to get a read on how he'd handle less time and space. It also still concerns me that when facing bigger, heavier players, he'll need to rely on faster processing and I didn't see examples of him thinking ahead of the play. Joshua Roy, otoh, has fewer physical attributes but knows how to use positioning, leverage, his stick and his head to create time and space for himself and his teammates. I think Josh Roy's game will translate to the pros better than LM's will. I haven't seen enough of Beck to make a good assessment but there was one play that I thought was very positive. He entered the zone on the Left Wing with a dman covering him. A teammate had burst ahead toward the net but there were 3 guys back. Beck slid the puck ahead, timing it perfectly to get it through all 3 London checkers to his teammate who didn't see the pass and didn't corral the puck. He makes a great play which utterly fails because his teammate didn't read the same play. Andrei Markov would be proud of him.

I love guys who don't hit goalies in the crest. We've had way too many of those.

I admit I was not happy with Montreal selecting Mailloux the summer the pick was made. But now I feel like the kid has done the right things off and on the ice and I am really high on Mailloux -- mobile RHD, big and toolsy.
And given how few games he has actually played since draft day, this was the type of stand-out season management needed to see moving forward.
I do not see any rush to declare him a sure-fire top 4 NHL d-man. Considering how many d-men the Habs have under contract for 2023-24, the organization is still in the 'sorting it out phase' with the young blue liners in Montreal and for me Mailloux is Laval-bound for the entirety of the upcoming season. With the Rocket, the kid will hopefully use those extensive reps to get coached up in the areas where he is deficient.

I've been a big Mailloux fan all year, lived his game, toughness and leadership... We will have a lot of D prospects to go through and figure out what to do with them

For Habs watchers, the Memorial Cup kicks off with the second game, which is on Saturday at 6:00pm ET on TSN. Peterborough (Beck) faces off against Seattle (Davidson). Each daily game for the rest of the round robin will feature one Habs prospect. Peterborough plays again on Sunday and Tuesday and Seattle plus its other games on Monday and Wednesday. Thursday is reserved for tie breakers, if necessary. The semi (2 vs 3 seed) is on Saturday and the final is on Sunday. The tournament does start tomorrow with the host Kamloops playing Quebec.
Enjoy!

A little surprising.. maybe he wasn't willing to come to North America? I thought his career was progressing even if his numbers were at times ordinary

I thought his career was progressing even if his numbers were at times ordinary A bit surprising considering the lack of depth in the pipeline. I expect that this signals that a bit more attention is likely going to be focused on the position at the draft and/or through free agency/trade. I expect there will be new young tender(s) in the system by mid July.
