I liked a lot of things about Xhekaj’s game. He is strong in the offensive zone. What he should work on is positioning and decision making in the D zone. Hopefully he can be coached on that and improve.

One of the U20 tournaments that European nations use to assess players for the 2023 WJC (in December). Quite a lot of the returnees from the recent Edmonton WJC were there too.

You've been paying more attention to Mr. Engstrom lately, NWT. That's good news. (Both the amount of time he's getting, and the attention you're paying to him).

Lots of pre season stuff going on in Europe, so nice to see a game with real consequences to it. Rögle (SHL) kick off their defence of the Champions Hockey League title with a match today, featuring recent Habs’ draft pick Adam Engström as the seventh defender. Even being the extra defender as a recent draft pick is pretty impressive given how strong a club Rögle is. First rounder Marco Kasper is also ready to go in a big role. seventeen Yuppers, I am paying more attention. I “missed” him when looking at Swedish D for the last draft because I had a bit of a bias for RHD. He played behind Calle Odelius so did not get the same prime ice time, but he outscored him in the playoffs…by a fair bit. He is not slipping through the cracks for me again! He looked good at the development camp too. Smooth skater and moves the puck well. Edit: Dichow is the backup for Frölunda as they kick off their Champions Hockey League action today as well.

Here is the link to the Rögle game (just started 10 minutes ago). The Polish hockey rink is cool. It is ringed with windows all around the rink! Engström is #56 in white/green. He gets the odd shift. www.youtube.com/watch?v=47-6M4vpxwU

Heineman scored his third goal in 7 SHL pre season games so far. Rookie tournament starts on the 14th so I expect rookie camp should start a few days before that. He should be heading over to Montreal in the next little while, hopefully fully healthy and in good game shape from those mens league games.
Heineman was from that same 2020 draft class as Guhle, Barron, Tuch, Myšák, etc. The Habs now have five of the top 48 picks from that draft. In hindsight, a lot of teams would likely rank Sean Farrell as top 50 or better in that draft class now based on his development in the first two years since being drafted.
Yesterday, Kapanen scored his first Liiga pre season goal. He was held without a point today for the first time in his three games of Liiga pre season action since returning from the WJC. He has a goal and assist in those three games, matching his output in 7 WJC games. I am definitely hoping to see more offense from him and hopefully he secures a Liiga spot for the whole season this year as the added competition will be key to his development. Last year he slit his time across the three leagues (junior, Liiga and Mestis -the mens second division).

Mailloux is still rehabbing his shoulder, so will miss the Knight pre season games and training camp. I guess this means he won’t be available for the Rookie Tournament either. Hopefully he is back soon…he needs to play.

His injury is the result of his picking a fight and loosing badly.

Engström is back with the big club as their seventh D today in their CHL tilt against Féhervár. He played in the first two matches too, so it is great that they use quiet times in the schedule to send him down to juniors and gets lots of ice time and development opportunities (he played over 30 minutes last night). That is how to use the multi tier team structure properly in developing young players. For the opposite effect, just look at what Kunlun are doing with Kostenko right now (he is 19 and has averaged just over 3:00 in ice time in the first three KHL games). How is that good for development?
Speaking of Champions Hockey League play, it looks like Dichow gets his first start after being the backup for Frölunda’s first two matches. Cool!

Maybe you should overlook and then play close attention to a few other guys. Seems like the kid has developed another level of confidence. Do you know if he's gained some weight? He is listed at 168 lbs on hockeydb, and 6' which is an ok height. We really should be getting notifications from the Habs everytime Engstrom and Hutson gain an inch or a couple of pounds.

Dmitri Kostenko played a season high 17:24 today in a Kunlun loss in the KHL. At least his ice time is trending upwards in the top league as it was downright worrisome after the first three games of the season. At 19, he just needs lots of reps.
A few of the CHL kids have started camp with their junior clubs prior to flying to participate in Habs rookie camp this week. Roy was held without a point, Kidney had three assists, and out west Jared Davidson had two goals and an assist for Seattle.
Speaking of Rookie Camp, first game is only a few days away in Buffalo on Thursday. They will have to meet in Montreal for the usual measurements and off ice stuff first I would imagine.

It is opening night for the new Liiga regular season in Finland, and Kapanen scored the first goal for 2022-23 for KalPa. Hopefully a sign of things to come!

Engström is poised to make his SHL regular season debut today with Rögle as the 7D. He has played with the men’s club in all their Champions Hockey League games so far. It will interesting to see if the club also gives him some J20 team time to give him some games with loads of ice time (they did this once already this young season). The Abbott brothers run a pretty good organization in Rögle so he is in good hands.

Very cool story about Engström today. He played 7:48 as the seventh D in his SHL season debut today. He is now playing with Rögle’s J20 team right after and has two assists in a 2-2 game. Crazy; a hockey doubleheader!
5-2 final, Engström with two assists in his second game of the day! He now has six points in six periods of J20 play this young season.

Kostenko scored his first KHL goal yesterday in a 6-3 loss.
Gordin had an assist for Rostov (VHL) yesterday and scored in the shootout in a 4-3 shootout loss yesterday too. He has two assists in his four VHL games this season.

Engström’s first SHL goal is a wild one.
The slo-mo version really shows the crazy, bouncy path the puck took to go on. Hey, in the stats they don’t have a description of how they go in, just that they went in!

Engström played on Rögle’s J20 team today and had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win. Two goals, on two consecutive nights, in two leagues.
The Habs’ only prospect playing in the USHL this season, goalie Emmett Croteau, made 25 saves in a 5-2 Waterloo Blackhawks win to open the season yesterday. The NCAA opens up next weekend I believe, so there should be a lot more prospects n which to report soon.

Dichow did let this softie in, but he made 27 of 28 saves and got his first SHL win today so was all smiles after the match. Nice to see him bear down after that goal (that has not always been the case in the past).
