I'm still unsure about the draft pick process. I think that the Panthers have to get to the EC finals before they move out of the 17th spot. In other words, they can win vs Boston and if they lose in Round 2, they still remain in 17th spot.

Is that correct?

By the time Jets head coach Rick Bowness made his way to the podium on Thursday, you got the feeling he had been holding in some of his true feelings for quite some time.

Bowness told reporters he wouldn’t last long in this session and he was true to his word, speaking for roughly one minute.

This sounded like a cathartic experience for Bowness, who didn’t hold back in his assessment of the series — or the late-season meltdown.

All of it made its way to the surface and boiled over.

“I’m so disappointed and disgusted right now,” said Bowness. “That’s my thoughts.”

Bowness was just warming up, building to a crescendo.

“No pushback. It’s the same crap we saw in February,” said Bowness. “As soon as we were challenging for first place and teams were coming after us, we had no pushback. This series, we had no pushback. Their better players were so much better than ours, it wasn’t even close.

“We have to push back. There has to be a pushback. There has to be pride. You have to be able to push back when things aren’t going your way. We had no push back. Their better players were so much better than ours tonight. They deserved to win. They were the better team in the regular season, they were the better team in this series.”

These were pointed words from Bowness and they certainly support the theory of going in a new direction with certain members of the core group.

How deep those changes go remains to be seen.

Bowness certainly shared his feelings for all to see.

He’s not in favour of one more season of running it back and hoping for a different outcome.

No more blaming the injuries that are part of the game, especially at this time of the year.

Bowness is good dude and I suppose it is refreshing to just unload and be direct about everything. Big changes are coming, though in reality they would have likely been coming had the Jets won a round.

Hellebuyck, Schiefele, and Dubois are not re-signing so basically it boils down to whether Cheveldayoff takes the best offers on the table this summer or goes with the somewhat riskier proposition of trading them during the season.

I am not really well versed on the style and outlook of Winnipeg's ownership, so I have no idea if tearing it down is even a option. For me if they cannot even convince Hellebuyck to extend, then a rebuild seems the smartest path. If you have Hellebuyck, Ehlers, Connor, Lowry, Morrissey, and Pionk as your veteran core, then I suppose they could still be a bubble team in a relatively weak division.

Anyway, Cheveldayoff should end up with three round picks and either a handful of nice prospects or NHL ready kids.

That said apparently the Jets top players were awful last night. Dubois was on the ice for three of the goals against, in what surely was his last game as a Jet.

That team has had playoff issues for a while now... other than 2018 they haven't done much...Cream rises to the top and none of these guys really have had any success

I dont follow Jeff Marek much but I saw him on CBC this morning talking to the news anchor. When the Jets came up he mentioned Dubois. He came right out & said " we all know he's going to Montreal".

If he is then I hope he is a hell of a lot better than he was in this series.

I know they are referring to Matthews, Marner & Nylander. The 4th I'm guessing is Reilley as he was drafted by Toronto.

Why delay the inevitable... trade them before a very deep draft and see what you get...

Unless HuGO have done some serious investigation/discussion about JLD, I am not sure he warrants the kind of money he might expect... I figure he will want Suze money, but I would hope his contract would be half base and half bonus... not sure how that would work.

Weird as it is to say I'd be fine with the Leafs winning this series, and even going on to beat the Bruins also (as long as they don't win the cup).

As a fan of the game it doesn't feel right to watch a team fail year-after-year to win even a single playoff series after having paid their dues through the long, painful process of bottoming out and rebuilding. I wouldn't wish that fate on even the Leafs faithful.

Maybe I'm also tired of watching Canadian teams get dunked on by US markets where hockey might only be the 2nd, or 3rd or 4th most popular sport.

So I guess my hope is for an all Canadian final in which the Oilers break the hearts of Leafs nation.

Jkr, I see your point. Cheveldayoff does not have a gun to his head over the summer. But an argument could be made, if those guys refuse to re-sign, then why wait? The return at the deadline may not be any better. And it would be kind of awkward because the casual fans are not going to grasp why the Jets are trading half the team if they are sitting there holding down the 7th or 8th seed.

Also, he has six medium or big ticket guys (Hellebuyck, Dubois, Schiefele, Wheeler, Dillon, DeMelo) so if Cheveldayoff waits until the deadline then he could jam himself up because he can only retain on three contracts during the fiscal year that starts on July 1 and everyone knows that contenders never have any cap room. More suitors can clear room in the summer.
