A lighter schedule today, but both games offer some Hab prospects in action: 🇸🇰 (Mešár) Vs 🇺🇸 (Hutson) 4:00pm ET TSN 🇨🇦 (Roy) Vs 🇩🇪 6:30pm ET TSN Dave Reid had an interesting observation during one of the intermissions yesterday. The host asked him what Canada needs to do differently this game to get a better result. He basically said they all need to play like Joshua Roy has. He comes in as the league’s defending scoring champ, but just accepts his role as solid two way forward who does so many little things right every shift. Doesn’t play for himself, but plays the right way for his line and his team. He said with 20 Roy’s out there they will do fine. Well, maybe 19 Roy’s and one Owen Beck. 😉 I saw this great post/tweet after Canada’s loss. It said something like “Canada cuts Owen Beck. Canada now Owen One.” 😆 That was my observation as well. Almost everyone of them tried the cute/pretty play rather than the simple team play. And most players admitted to it in their interviews yesterday It looked to me they were trying to embarrass Czechia.

Perfect guy for that 3/4 line centre who can win faceoffs, play defensively yet still give you offense. And they cut him. It gave me bad vibes for this team, as if there was some poor judgment at work. Caedan Bankier…really? Not sure my opinion has changed. There’s a lot of showmanship and ‘me’ on display but not enough of using your teammates to create plays. Bedard too has not passed the puck enough to include his teammates. It causes players to expect ‘those’ guys to do it all and reinforces with ‘those’ guys they’re expected to do it all. It’s a formula for losing and the coach better make some changes right now.

And don’t get me started on all those big, slow, defensive minded defenders. The game now is much more about mobile defenders that start the transition play. And Milic should have been #1 from the start. A stud all playoffs last year and a phenomenal season so far with Seattle, albeit on a stacked team. Gaudreau has been pedestrian at best in the OHL but has that past Hockey Canada pedigree at the U18s, almost 21 months ago.

Hutson with the primary assist on Brindley’s goal. His draft stock is riding methinks.

He was also on the ice for the Slovak goal but was put in a bad spot by his partner making a bad decision at the blue line, allowing the Slovak player to beat him wide. Hutson them dealing with an odd man situation. He almost blocked the puck twice but just missed each time.

Mešár’s attempted pass deflects off an American for the third straight Slovakian goal in the second. 4-2 now into the third.

Here was a nice set up by Mešár earlier in the game. He does create chances on his line with his skill and vision.

It's a real Shane Wright lovefest on the TSN intermission

Bedard with the natural hattrick. And his 7th WJC goal on this date (December 28th). That is bonkers.

It's a real Shane Wright lovefest on the TSN intermission If you objectively watch him, he does not drive the play. He relies on others to create chances. Not ideal for a centre.

Bedard with the natural hattrick. And his 7th WJC goal on this date (December 28th). That is bonkers. Austria and Germany. Not that bonkers, especially when you consider Austria has been outscored 20-0 in this tournament after only 2 games

Full slate of games today. A few doozies, but one could be downright ugly.

🇸🇪 (Engström) Vs 🇨🇿 1:30pm ET TSN
🇨🇭 Vs 🇺🇸 (Hutson) 4:00pm ET TSN3/5

The Swiss/US game is the most interesting to me. Are the US really a contender?

They say this team could be one of the best Canadian teams ever assembled, yet I find myself thinking this team is more likely to lose in the quarterfinals than any team in recent memory.
And it’s not the defense or the goaltending that worries me, it’s the coaching. This team continues to try to make the pretty play and not out work their opponents. Yet when the so shoot and crash and get traffic in front they score. The coaching staff needs to get this team’s head on right.

Thankfully they found their work boots (or actually got some PP goals).

In the shadows of another great Bedard performance, Roy quietly had a good game last night with a goal, two assists, and a number of good chances and smart plays. Nice to see the coaching staff rewarding him with a promotion to the second (or 1B actually) line (with Bedard and Stankoven) for the last two games.
Quiet day with only two games today, and only one featuring a Habs prospects. Tomorrow will be huge as so many permutations as to what can happen and how the teams will end up seeded in the standings. Both pools are quite jumbled up and fun!
🇸🇰 (Mešár) Vs Latvia 11:00am ET TSN

Although this short clip does not show it, Nemec’s goal was all about Mešár rushing the play up ice on the left wing, stopping and spotting Nemec jumping into the play and feeding him the cross ice pass that lead to the goal. He also added an ENG and had two posts in the second period. Pretty effective game overall for Mešár.

Last day of round robin play, so all about the seeding implications today. Five prospects in action as Rohrer and 🇦🇹 are already headed to the relegation best of three against 🇱🇻.
🇨🇭 Vs 🇸🇰 (Mešár) 11:00am ET TSN
🇩🇪 vs 🇨🇿 1:30pm ET TSN
🇺🇸 (Hutson) Vs 🇫🇮 (Kapanen) 4:00pm ET TSN
🇨🇦 (Roy) Vs 🇸🇪 (Engström) 6:30pm ET TSN
Most of these games should be good ones, with the Czechia game the most lopsided on paper. All games have implications for the standings/seeding in the medal round.
With the early Habs-Caps start, it is at the same time as the 🇺🇸 🇫🇮 game so get your pvr set for one of the games!

Two goals by Petrovsky 49 seconds apart late in the second make it 3-1 Slovakia. Mešár with a secondary assist on the first, and a beauty primary on the second sending Petrovsky in all alone.

Hutson with a nice shot for the USA’s final goal in a 6-2 win over Finland. I expected a much more competitive game. Oh well.
Roy opens the scoring for Canada tonight. Bedard with three assists on three goals.

Colton Dach went hard into the boards last night and did not return. Looked like a shoulder injury. The family bad luck with WJC injuries continues unfortunately.
However, very excited that his replacement is Owen Beck whom I and a few others have argued should have been on the team to start. He gets thrown into the deep end now in the medal round. What a rush for the kid.

Not sure why Canada as the #2 seed would get the 6:30pm game. Hometown bias

According to RDS website, Owen Beck has been called in to replace Dach on Team Canada. How's that for a belated Christmas present.
