The upcoming WJC could be quite a busy time for Habs prospects with a number expected to be named to their teams and a few others are on the bubble. I will post roster news up to the event, and then prospect and tourney news once it starts.
Beck, Roy and Kidney named to Canada’s selection camp roster today.
Hutson named to the USA camp roster. Lots of guys to cut though with 32 invited. Hutson should make the final roster though.
Rohrer named to Austria’s selection camp roster. No Marco Kasper though.

And Engström gets his invite to Sweden’s camp.

Roy makes Team Canada, but both Kidney and Beck were sent home today. I am definitely surprised on Beck as he is that prototypical 3rd line, responsible centre that Team Canada always likes on its roster (they do have a bit of a formula that they rarely stray from). Kidney was injured in the first scrimmage so was definitively behind the eight ball this week while his competitors were getting games and views in.
Habs now probably end up with six guys once Kapanen announced to Finland’s group.

I am sure Beck is disappointed, but the younger guys always have a hard time pushing older guys aside in such a talent rich country. Just eye-balling it, I assume maybe kids such as Dean and Gaucher profile to play the type of role that Beck could have (likely successfully) played.

It’s the Team Canada way unless you are a Uber high pick like Bedard or Fantilli. Beck has also never played internationally for Canada yet. That will change a year from now! Book it!

Just eye-balling it, I assume maybe kids such as Dean and Gaucher profile to play the type of role that Beck could have (likely successfully) played. Here's my suspiciously biased take. In time, Beck is going to be better than Wright. He may even be better right now. Cutting Beck was a mistake, but Hockey Canada has done that before too. There were some years where we were offensively challenged and you looked back and saw them cutting some very talented offensive players to take their 2 way guys. NOthing wrong with 2 way guys, but you need scorers. I'm seeing Beck as just as responsible defensively as Dean and Gaucher, but more than a bit better offensively. TBH I haven't seen Dean or Gaucher play to any extent but the numbers tell a story. The one number where Beck fails is age. 18 vs 19.

Roy is such an understated player. He hardly has the puck on his stick before it’s gone to a teammate. He seems to be playing a move ahead of everyone else.

Kapanen added Finland’s second goal and had a good game. The US added an empty net goal and the game finished 5-2 USA over Finland.

Slafkovsky (MTL) Nemec (SLO) Cooley (USA) Wright (CAN)

Bob McKenzie named Roy as the guy who has impressed him the most so far on Canada. What I've seen is such an efficient game. He does very little in a spectacular fashion, but fools everyone as he did in that assist above and then on his goal, it was just a good stick and driving to the net. Intercepts a pass and keeps control and then roofs a backhand that Andrei Markov would have loved. He continues to show that he's thinking a step ahead of everyone else. Just a really smart, unassuming, Clark Kent kind of amazing right winger.
The opposite of (cough) a certain number 17 on the Habs. Maybe that's why I want so badly for him to be traded. What a disrespect to a number worn by greats like Murray Wilson.
