I know Roy had a good game. But if Milic doesn't get Player of the Game than the Moncton Regional Police need to be called in to investigate the robbery

Any votes to draft Luke Subban? 6-2 Canada Yeah. Id take Hughes any day I'd take Wright. He has had a real good tournament. And captain to boot, so I guess those attitude issues were overblown. Now, are you asking if I'd take Wright over Slakkovskÿ. That's a closer decision, for me (I was very much pro-Wright) than it was a few months ago, but Slafkovskÿ has been the most underwhelming rookie we've had in decades. And they have all had to battle the little minutes on the third and fourth line with grunts. An argument could be made Slafs grunts had better pedigree, but still not fit to develop young talent.

Wearing #1. I love these small numbers. If Hughes didn’t pick #43 he’d have done better.

As a compete outsider I am not big on Wright as captain. He gave me a whiny princess vibe and not one of leadership. He has never taken charge of anything in my eyes. Maybe he does in the room. I thought Guenther demonstrated leadership when he said we cant Michigan our way to the gold. I've always found Wright as Mr. Milk Toast. I'd love to know what he's like. As far as skill in this tournament, I've found him pretty invisible for the majority of his games with the odd really strong play mixed in. How many points has he had since moved off the Bedard line? I think he'll be a good 3rd line center in the NHL but that's not what I'm looking for in the NHL from a top pick. Can't wait to see how Wright and Slaf turn out.

When asked about the Michigan-attempts, He basically said they needed to play like a team and not individuals trying to skill their way to wins. I e been listening to his interviews, looking for this character issue, and believe me I want to find it so I'm not constantly looking at Slaf, but IMO, he has said all the right things in every interview. Fantilli, on the other hand, when asked about his Michigan attempt said, (paraphrased) "I've made that play before, I'm comfortable trying that, if I had another chance I might try it again". And yet no one questions his character or leadership.

And yet no one questions his character or leadership. I think a lot of people have noticed the potential ego and selfishness issues with Fantilli. You can even deduce it from the way he plays the game. He wants the highlight reel goal a little too badly and ends up trying to force low percentage plays in his attempts to look good. When people talk about Wright's character issues, I haven't heard anyone claim him to be selfish. It's the opposite - he could stand to impose himself a bit more on the ice and put his skills to use. Otherwise there's too much Kyle Chipchura in his game for my liking. I agree with you about the interviews though. He always says the right thing but I do find that he comes across as nervous. And iirc, Wright got very defensive about his game when challenged on it. No hint of selfishness, but red flags nonetheless.

However, the ability to have your actions reflect what you're saying is not so easy to change. Those soft skills are hard wired based on how we were raised and our life experiences. As a guy who uses such information to hire people I would hesitate to hire Shane Wright. Do I want him to succeed regardless of what team he plays for? YES! Do I want him to play for the team I cheer for? NO. I don't believe he has either the talent or the teamwork to merit a #1 pick. Fantilli on the other hand does not give me the heebee geebies like Wright.

St. Louis said they were going to take it slow with him as he was figuring out what type of NHL player he was going to be. He's still an 18 year old kid in a man's body. Remember, "development"; don't put him a position to fail by expecting too much from him immediately. The record so far is that Wrights's played 8 games in the NHL with 1G & 1A. He's been a healthy scratch for a number of games with the Kraken. He's played 5 games in the AHL with 4G. Slafkovsky has played in all of the Habs games & has 4G & 6A. There is a rumor that he will be sent back to Junior after the World Juniors. www.bladeofsteel.com/Breaking-News-Shane-Wright-close-to-being-traded-193334As for Slafkovsky, I think it's much too early to draw any conclusions at least for me. Those are great skills to have for anyone hiring or needing to judge people. I don't have those, but I agree with you about both Wright and Fantilli. Wright doesn't come across as a bad kid, but he does seem hesitant to accept the pressure and responsibility of being THE guy. That's not bad in and of itself (I'm not crazy about the same things myself) but you can be an excellent complementary person without being THE guy. The issue, of course, is that you have to accept that you may not be chosen first or second or whatever. You can still be a key part of championship teams of course, and help improve those around you. I didn't see Fantilli's first interview that Skilly refers to, but I saw one after today's game. Fantilli didn't shy away from the attention, but there were enough "we's" and 'team' references. Perhaps the fact he isn't THE guy on this particular team has sunk in. He's learning, as have many 17 and 18 year old players before him, that this is a tough tournament and you don't dominate like you did before. The guy who was amazing, was Gretzky, who was a dominant player, at age 16 (though just about to turn 17 four weeks later). That 78 WJC had some interesting players. Canada had an excellent defense and strength galore up the middle. Goaltending was questionable and might have cost them the gold. But I digress. Fantilli played his best game against the US and hopefully, he and Beck can add some scoring depth to the team.

Hughes stated that he and Gorton had no idea who they were drafting either the day of, or the day before the draft. They say they called Slafkovsky to ask him one final question (they never did say if they called Wright to ask him the same question). But the question that sealed the pick was “What is your favourite moment playing hockey?”. Slafkovsky answered playing in the third period with a one goal lead or down by one goal. Yet, they are not putting him in those positions. I’d imagine if Wright was asked he probably gave an answer about winning championships. But again, Hughes never revealed if they contacted Wright. The impression at the draft was NOT that Wright was timid, it was that he was overly cocky, too sure of himself (I think one poster used the term entitled). People now are flipping the script that cocky is suddenly good. Just reeks to me One thing everyone of us can agree on though is that Slaf and the 2 first rounders next year HAVE to be home runs. My fear looking at how they are handling Slaf, is that we still are lacking people who can develop young talent.

Lost in the disallowed goals (called correctly by IIHF standards), the heroics from Milic and the four point night from our lad Roy, Owen Beck played a smart game as a member of the regular fourth line and even hit the scoreboard with a secondary assist on Clarke’s goal to make it 5-2. I guess Williams can make the right adjustments after all. Oilers first rounder Schaefer ended up being the odd forward out who played the 13th guy who added his impactful minute to the game. 😉

It is too early to know with any degree of certainty, but it certainly seems the top of the 2022 draft was among the two or three most underwhelming draft classes of the last decade.
I am pleased for Roy. If JR can make some additional improvements in skating, it is really starting to look like he could be a top-six forward in the league. He has carved out a nice body of work internationally by being that third guy who can win pucks and complement top players. Thriving in that role augurs well for having the right mentality to succeed in the NHL.

Lost in the discussion between Wright & Slafkovsky is Cooley.
Arizona chose Cooley over Wright. They are both centers but the Coyotes felt Cooley was the better choice. Maybe we should be comparing Slafkovsky to Logan Cooley.

Yeah. Id take Hughes any day I'd take Wright. He has had a real good tournament. And captain to boot, so I guess those attitude issues were overblown. My guess is it's less Wright's attitude than his drive and intensity that worried scouts. He has 6 points in 6 games in the tournament, behind Bedard, Stankoven and Roy, who have 10 or more. IMO, he's played well at times, especially on that play where he outfought the US dman for the puck and made a gorgeous backhand pass to Gauthier (?) who failed to score. In general he's been ok, but one would expect more from a guy who went 4th. Nemec and Jiricek have both impressed more. Cooley has 12 points, but even he hasn't been as good as I expected. A lot like Fantilli...tons of speed and flash, but not dominant. Of course, Bedard has been the single dominant player who has overshadowed the others, despite all the extra attention he gets. I think if Beck and Fantilli are played more by Williams, that will put more pressure on the Czechs. A 4th line that is productive offensively (replace Bankier on RW and that line really gets dangerous), would throw a wrench into the Czech strategy. Fingers crossed we don't have a lot of bad luck today. And Milic plays a solid game

If we retain (and extend) Monahan, that is ideal for Slaf's development but not for maximization of assets. It's a challenge to get the balance right, but I trust HuGo much more than previous management.

Beck's scoring has fallen off a bit since earlier in the season, but he's on a sub .500 hockey team and Bankier is on a strong Kamloops team. Their ppg are similar and my guess is Beck is a better face-off guy. From what we are hearing of the Hockey Canada organization and it's handling of certain issues, it sounds very much old school and not prone to meritocracy as much as familiarity and buddiness. Williams was an assistant on some earlier WJC teams so that automatically puts him at the top of any list to coach the next team, whether he is capable or not. If he does know what he's doing, fine, but the people judging that don't exactly ooze confidence for me. I can practically see them at the club, drinking whiskey and smoking cigars. Again my opinion only, but I can't understand Cameron Allen's inclusion on the team. If I've found the right Allen on hockeydb, he's a 17 year old kid with 16 points in 33 games, so he's not the next Bryan Fogerty or Ray Bourque. His inexperience has shown itself several times with some brutal turnovers. He was probably playing more than he should because Korchinski wasn't available (I missed that...was he hurt? All I noticed was his absence). If Korchinski can't play today, Allen may be a problem unless he has the game of his life.

Wild period in the bronze game. Six goals and counting.
Engström got a secondary assist on Bystedt’s goal, Sweden’s first of the game.

A couple of brutal giveaways by Ufko and Augustine lead directly to goals. Looks like the Americans are trying to give it away.

The U.S. scores a contested PP goal with 1:20 left to take the lead. Sweden comes back to tie it at 7 with 21 seconds to go.
13 goals on the last 2 periods.
Off to OT.

Rosen with two fanned shots, and two giveaways, that allowed the Swedes to clear the zone, then the Swedes gained control rushed in and scores with 21 secs left to send it to OT
I thought Rosen had given the game away
