Oops. Sorry Paul. Typing at the same time. You can delete my thread. Agreed. Very good signing at a reasonable cost.

I was really hoping they’d sign Monahan. The team was a different team when he was on the ice. Possibly even a playoff team

Yup. Happy with this on many levels. Good to have Sean help us and our kids. He will be an asset to be traded unless injury comes again. And good to see he'd rather sign with us for very reasonable sum than try the FA market - shows HuGo's got something good happening with this team.
Oh, and i like watching him play; he's a smart talented hockey player.

Nice to see fiscal consciousness with our GM. Bergy would of given 4M

He seemed to have some chemistry with Slafkovsky. Maybe he can help with the development of #20.

I was really hoping they’d sign Monahan. The team was a different team when he was on the ice. Possibly even a playoff team While part of the early season success was just lack of injuries and Allen playing well, Monahan's injury was a turning point, I think losing an impact veteran has to have hurt. And while on HF people are again making fun of the idea he might fetch a first at the deadline, I wouldn't ignore the possibility. At 50% at the deadline, his cap hit would be negligible and he could well get rented off.

I concur. This is a good signing. If he gets injured again, the club has such limited exposure in money and term that it really does not matter.
In a hard cap world, where every roster move a GM makes is inevitably sort of connected to every other one, I would say this this signing signals that Hughes knows that he cannot pull off a Dubois trade.

Monahan is a bright guy and he sees tge young talent on this team, it's a great market and he can have a lot if fun and a chance to get back to where he was before he got the injury bug.

Probably the right move. I don't feel confident that he'll perform at the same level that he did last year, but he clearly had a positive impact on the team. And if he helps Slaf/Dach/CC etc reach new heights next year, it'll be a win.

Excellent signing. I had been hoping for that on several levels.
1) If he centres the 2nd line, it gives us a top line of Caufield - Suzuki - Dach, which was very good last year. 2) If he centres the 3rd line (assuming some kids do very well and the second line is centred by Dach) it gives us an advantage over most other 3rd lines in the league on a match-up basis 3) He very obviously has leadership and calming influences that had an effect on his teammates. 4) The cost is a good balance between his skill set and the risk of further injury. I think he'll be healthier than most expect. We can't be unlucky forever in that regard.
If he produces it gives us the option in February/March of trading him, or extending him on a longer term deal. He'll be 29 in October, which doesn't line up with the core of the team, but extending him woiuld help during the transition process in creating the right culture on the team. Or he gets traded to a contender, getting us a pick in a future year. Family issues come into play strongly with pro athletes, and I've read from several sources that Sean and his wife like Montreal a lot.
Anyway, this will all fall out as time goes along. This one year contract is a much better solution than letting him walk.

Line-up speculation begins: Caufield - Suauki - Dach Slafkovsky- Monahan - Gallagher RHP - Dvorak - Anderson Pezzetta - Evans - Roy That leaves Armia and Hoffman out in the cold, but I'm hoping something is done about them over the next 3 weeks. I also think some solution has to be found for Dvorak and Anderson as they don't provide enough value for what they are being paid. As well, we have Beck, Mesar, Ylonen, Kidney, Kapanen and Luke Tuch in the wings along with our first 3 picks this year, though not all will be forwards. We can't have overpaid veterans standing in their way. Clearly only a few of those kids will be good enough to make it, but if even a third do, there will be a logjam. If we select Michkov this year, it gives us more development time, but if it's Smith or Leonard or Reinbacher, they'll be slotting into the team in a couple of years. On the back line Matheson - Guhle - Harris Xhekaj - Savard Kovacevic (I have him here because I'm not a fan and I think once we get more RHD's in a trade of some kind, he'll be moved) Barron ( I don't think he's going to make it. His reads in the defensive zone aren't quick enough). Edmundson - might stick around till the trade deadline. If Matheson can play right D, then Edmundson goes to the first or second pair. I think Harris is severely under rated and can slot into the top pair until another Dman is developed, but I like him on that 2nd pair better. Guhle is eventually going to be the top pair LHD. I just don't want to overstretch him this year, as he was forced to do last season. This would be a great debate in a pub over a beer or three.

It's fine, but I want to see more progress toward the goal of contending, even if that means trading veterans for younger talent.
It starts with the draft. I have a feeling they will pass on Michkov or trade down, but I hope I'm wrong.
Still a lot of dead weight on the roster....

I think Hughes has been holding that 50% retention slot this offseason for a reason. I can't see Hoffman or Dvorak sticking around. IF there is a trade for Dubois one of them will have to be going there.

I'm not 100% sure this means no Dubois... but it does give that impression. We just sacrificed 2M of cap space in a way that would be redundant if we got Dubois. The alternate explanation is that Winnipeg clearly wants Dvorak in a Dubois deal with the Habs, and the issue is with the other parts of the offer. EDIT: I think we'll know for sure when the Habs take on some kind of a dead weight contract. I'm imagining something like Mantha or Myers for Armia : someone with a really bad contract for 1 year, rather than someone with a mediocre contract for 2 years, giving us options in 24-25.

Gallagher still contributes, though not worth his contract I can't really see a way out other than hoping he plays well enough to be movable, otherwise it'll be a buyout or bribing some other team to take him. Armia is much the same on a smaller scale. Hoffman and Edmundson will be gone in a year, one way or another.

That would be the biggest 2nd line we've ever had... lol On D, I think Eddy will be top pair so he can be moved at the deadline. If Xhekaj is with Savard I hope he starts becoming the rushing D man I think he can become... become a 4th forward in the counterattack

We must remember that teams are built with young and old guys, big and small, fast and tough, offense and defense. All young players need veterans and mentors.

Monahan is no substitute for Dubois and I see this as a negative.
The signing itself is not the problem, it's the excuse of not making the Dubois deal that is the issue. unless Dvorak is part of the package going the other way.
Suzuki Dubois Dach Monahan New Draftee Evans
Looks good to me.
Let's see...

Agree 100% Addict.
What’s the over/under on games played for Monahan? 40? The guy is chronically injured at this point.
Backing away from Michkov (potentially). Backing away from Dubois (potentially). You can’t just do things on your own schedule. Opportunities present themselves and you have to react.
I overall like this management team, it’s what I’ve been yearning for for years, but I worry a bit about the certainty that they have all the answers.
Give me Dubois and Michkov and I’ll take my chances. I don’t want to give up Dach but honestly if they trade off the #5 pick I’d rather deal that for Dubois than be stuck with David Reinbacher.

I actually forgot Dach in my previous post. IF we get Dubois, we're good in center for several years. Monahan just added insurance. Plus Dach can play with CC/Suzuki for a great line combo. Dvorak is odd man out in this version of the Habs.

To get Dubois, Montreal is going to have to part ways with something they would rather not
We know Montreal turned down a Winnipeg deal involving Suzuki
We know Winnipeg turned down a Montreal deal involving Anderson, Dvorak and a first round draft pick
So now that LA is supposedly offering Byfield for Dubois, what does Montreal have to offer to sway Winnipeg?
The package is going to have to look something like this
Anderson First round pick Second round pick Guhle or Barron or Harris Beck

NOBODY is going to give that size package for Dubois. NOBODY.
Anderson, 2nd and Harris is about it.
Guhle along gets Dubois but that's a no go. Dach is out of the question because that was already the ask and turned down.
Dubois is good, but no a star, never mind franchise level return.
Losing Florida's pick at 17th was damaging because that and Anderson or Dvorak was enough.

Guhle is untouchable at this point. He has the potential of being a great one, see Pietrangelo and may be better, which is what you hope for with a 1st rounder.
And i ain't giving up a first round pick for PLD except maybe our 31st overall this year which is really a 2nd rounder.
i don't mind giving up Harris or Barron as I've got doubts about both of them and they may interest Jets. As will Dvo. much of this comes down to what Jets can sell their fans about how they got a decent return when they are not likely to get much given PLD is holding al the cards.
This all comes down to what teams are able to get PLD to agree to a long term deal and then the team(s) will get to work on giving Jets enough to close the deal. But if PLD can only come to terms with one team then Jets don't have much bargaining power and they'll have to take what's being offered by that team or hold off and hope to get more at the trade deadline which is unlikely.

I might be willing to swap first round picks with Winnipeg to get PLD if we’re not going to take Michkov. Ryan Leonard or Zach Benson or David Reinbacher for PLD and the #18 pick seems like a pretty good swap to me. Throw in Anderson to make the money balance out and maybe an extra pick or prospect. That seems like a fair trade.
To be clear, if they really like Michkov I’d want them to keep the pick and draft the Russian. I still want PLD but maybe we can get him in a different way.
