So the Avs signed Drouin. Hallelujah!
Haven't posted the terms yet which is interesting but I'd be surprised if it's anymore that $1.5, and likely for 1 year.
Hughes getting the addition by subtraction going. Now just Hoffman, Armia and Dvo.

Move Dvorak?
Monahan is a injury waiting to happen and the second Suzuki goes down, we have the worst center group in the NHL. Possibly in the AHL too.
If Dubois was a Hab, Dvorak was history and Monohan a luxury. But he isn't and we aren't that deep at center.

If the offer came in I'd move him... he's meh... milk toast, he doesn't seem to do anything well... 4.5 mill for 28 points... I get the feeling he doesn't like being in Montreal...

For league minimum, Avs got a steal.
He wasn't worth what we were paying for him, but he is worth more then league minimum. He can put up 50 points on the Avs.
The worst thing for him was that he was suppose to be a Quebecois star and we paid a brutal price both in assets and salary. Blame Drouin AND the former idiot in equal parts.

I'm worried about Drouin signing with the Avs... The higher elevation and the thinner air might affect his heart.

The Avs hope that being reuinited with McKinnin will somehow awaken the player within. Many have tried but all have failed. For $875,000 it's a worhtwhile risk.
But really - the guy is entering the prime of his career and the most he can get is 1 year at less than $1 million. Man did MB crap the bed on this one.

I thought he would go to Europe. He never demonstrated much heart or desire to excel. As evidenced by the Johansen deal, Sakic is looking in the bargain bin for players.

For all Drouin faults, at league minimum he can still produce more than a scrub. If lightning strikes in a bittle and he puts up 60 points, that is a hell of a steal.

Montreal signed Lias Andersson, the notable early first round bust from the 2017 draft. I guess he can figure skate around the ice in Laval. Normally I would say whatever, maybe a 25 year old can get his career back on track. But this one kind of smells bad because Bobrov and Gorton had a dismal draft record when it comes to Euro forwards in New York and precisely because of that connection there is not a worse place for Andersson to try to resurrect his career. Yuck...

If Dubois was a Hab, Dvorak was history and Monohan a luxury. But he isn't and we aren't that deep at center. Having their two top centers go down would hurt most teams badly. We’d be left with Dach, Newhook (who most know little about) Evans and whatever. Still not bad considering who we’d lost.

The Avs had nothing to lose by signing Jonathan Drouin ... at the league minimum, it was a no-brainer ... low-risk, potentially-high return ... whether he got a fair shake in Montreal depends on which side of the fence you're on ... besides, as far as Montreal is concerned, the drama should be over now ...
Cheers.

Cheers. You gotta help me there Dis? How did Drouin not get a fair shake in Mtl? He was given every opportunity, and then some, to excel or even perform and he never did. Why is that on anyone else but Drouin? Should they have sent him to Laval to work on his game, or not put him on the PP with all the pressure? I would have been good had they done either.

Even though there were best intentions at the time...
"There's obviously a lot of pressure playing in Montreal, everybody knows that," Drouin said. "But for me as a player I think I'd rather have that pressure on myself [here] than some other places. I'm French-Canadian and I'm going to thrive on that pressure. I like that stuff."
...it just never panned out, for reasons we'll never know.
Still--using standard hockey trade metrics--among the lesser lights in Habs' history.

I think it’s because he’s really not a very good hockey player. By that I don’t mean he’s not “skilled” and those innate puck and skating skills were enough to have a brilliant junior career and get picked high in the draft.
I’m sure his natural skills will help him get some points and assists here and there in Colorado, but he became expendable in Tampa for reasons that are now pretty clear. He has pretty weak hockey sense, poor decision making, and lacks the strength to be any more than a perimeter player.
I wish him luck in Colorado but that was simply a bad trade and in hindsight poor talent evaluation by Bergevin.

Thaat's an interesting point, and honestly, I never paid enough attention to him to judge for myself if he lacked the vision and anticipation that can make a good player great. His innate skills (great hands) may have covered up for that lack of vision. What did stand out for me was that he tended to play on the periphery. If he drove to the net like Gally, he'd force defences to break up and thus become very dangerous. I don't blame him as much as the former GM, who should never have traded for him. We gave up a key part of a pending weakness on the team (Markov was aging and a replacement was needed) for a guy who had red flags in him and played the least impactful position in the game. In contrast, Hughes traded from a position of strength (upcoming young LHD) to pluck a 3rd overall pick off Chicago and fill a position his predecessor repeatedly said he wasn't able to fill.

I wish him luck in Colorado but that was simply a bad trade and in hindsight poor talent evaluation by Bergevin. I can't quantify how bad that trade was. If we had Sergachev, could that have been the difference for a cup 3 years ago? 10 points in the standings every season? Bergy blew his brains out on that one, but he was ok for most other trades.

Then there was the Alzner signing. Not a trade, but effectively replacing Markov with...a warm body. Maybe a cold body.

The trade was bad enough. But then to give him, a guy who had proved nothing, a 6 year AAV $5.5 million was insane. He was our highest paid forward for how many years? and yes, we may have had a cup 3 years ago as picking up Sergie would have been huge for us and weakened TB. Keep in mind Drouin was off looking after himself throughout our run.

I don't understand the support - if that's the right term - for this Drouin move. It was almost unanimous on this board, he had to go. He had multiple opportunities and never showed up for the team.
Why do people think he will be any different than he was in TB and Montreal? Sakic is looking for bargains in Johansen & Drouin but he will just end up getting what he paid for.

Initially, I liked the idea that Marc Bergevin gave up something of value, to bring in something else of value ... but, I also remember thinking that, Tampa had already proved that they could win without Jonathan Drouin in the lineup ... they suspended him for not reporting to the Syracuse Crunch, and the Bolts continued to win without him ... what Steve Yzerman didn't have, was a young blue-chip defensive prospect, who could potentially be Victor Hedman's heir apparent ... so, when Mikhail Sergachev dropped on his lap, all he had to give up was a player his team could win without, anyway ... the results; Sergachev is right on schedule, while Drouin crashed and burned (out?) ... it's all spilled milk now, man ... Cheers.

the results; Sergachev is right on schedule, while Drouin crashed and burned (out?) ... it's all spilled milk now, man ... Cheers. What this is a great example about is that one catastrophic mistake can set you back a ton. Bergie made a lot of moves, but almost always small ones. The acquisition of Danault, at the time, was a small one. We gave up replaceable 3rd liners for a prospect who turned out very well. The Petry deal was a small one...giving up a second rounder only. When we get into bigger territory, the record is not so good. The Sergachev and Subban deals were not good. The Subban deal not so much as both players ended up with injury issues. Berg gave up a fan favourite and lots of unsold jerseys for a guy who played against the #2 lines in the league and was rarely an offensive threat 5 on 5. No need to go into the Sergachev/Drouin deal. Another one that wasn't BIG and wasn't a trade with another team, was Berg's negotiating with Markov, who was always a straight up guy on the team. I think Berg had his mind made up even before starting negotiations with Andrei. He signed Alzner, so he had what he thought was leverage on his side. That only proves how bad his judgment was. Alzner was no where near Markov in talent, even with Andrei at age 38. Two years of Markov would have been a lot better for the team than 5 years of lost CAP space. The warning signs were there early when Bergie hired his friends, but Molson let it go on too long. It was clear after the 3rd year that Price was the main factor in the team's success. You usually give a GM 5 years to see if they have it or not. Molson got sucked in for that next 5 years contract. Thank god it's over.
