I really like Monahan, but if he can fetch us a prospect like Chaz Lucius (I doubt the Jets even consider McGroarty or Barlow) that would be pretty good. We would probably have to add something, depending on the discussion.
There can always be the consideration to sign Sean again if he doesn't extend with the Jets.
With the Avs (who need someone more productive than Ryan Johansen) I'd be targeting either Calum Ritchie or (LOL) Mikhail Gulyayev. Again, because Monahan is a rental, something might need to be added.

I suspect they moved Barron for a reason (too much uncertainty over his ceiling) and would not likely want him back. But I could be wrong and if so, full steam ahead.

For sure, Winnipeg and Colorado could both use a versatile, skilled vet like Monahan up front. In reality, surely a lot of teams are already calling Hughes.
Colorado, with a recent Cup and as a top tier contender for years now, is running low on picks and worthwhile prospects. I doubt they are inclined to give up a first rounder or Ritchie for Monahan, so what would even entice Montreal? They have traded away all their seconds. Montreal does not need Gulyayev. The Olausson kid from 2021 seems underwhelming.
Winnipeg is a division rival who could meet Colorado in the playoffs and the Jets have way more in terms of picks and prospects to dangle.

Can see that happening. Someone with an extra year on it....a team looking to dump a player for cap space. Hopefully, Hughes told him, after your cup run, we'll sign you back in Montreal for the next year.

That's where Zegras comes in.

Zegras just had surgery. He is not getting traded at the deadline. If Verbeek is sour on him, a big hockey trade in the summer could materialize. However, I would not give up critical young pieces for Zegras because he is basically Suzuki offensively but with a weaker all around game; also he is an American now on his second NHL contract and still not locked up long term, which would logically a worry Canadian clubs.
Monahan deserves to go to a contender and chase the Cup. I suppose Monahan departing could roughly coincide with Newhook's return, but in reality I do not think Hughes will lose sleep over Evans and Stephens masquerading as the 2C and 3C, respectively.
Considering how affordable the pro-rated slice of Monahan's contract is, some teams (like Winnipeg) can easily fit him with no retention.

We need to squeeze Winnipeg for one of their better prospects, don't think we could snag Julien but maybe Levis?

I'd be more interested in expanding on the trade. As a 'for instance', Monahan and the worst of Calgary's or Montreal's picks in 2025 for Colby Barlow. Or something like that. Maybe we're giving up too much there, maybe not, depending on what our scouts think of Barlow. He's only at a ppg in his D + 1 year, but it looks like he's been injured, playing only 20 games.
I think Monahan is worth more than a 5th or 7th round pick, which is where Julien and Levis ended up last year, but I don't see anyone else that fit our needs or that the Jets are willing to give up for Monahan alone. Both our picks in 2025 should be middle of the pack or better. MMaybe we fight for a playoff spot or no. Regardless, I hope our string of bad injury luck has played itself out.

It is hard to say. I do not know any Jets’ fans so I never hear the opinions of people who really dig in and follow their prospects. However, I agree with seventeen that Julien and Levis, at face value, are late rounders and seem like long-shots to make it in the league.
No idea, but my assumption is that Winnipeg is not trading Barlow, Heinola, or McGroarty for Monahan; and likely not even Lucious or Lambert or their first rounder. I foresee Chevaldayoff trying to dangle Chibrikov, who is a nice little winger doing well in his first season in North America, but my question would be why do the Habs need another smallish forward that may not be able to consolidate in a scoring-line role in the NHL? If Hughes says no thanks to that type of an offer, I could see Winnipeg placing Montreal’s 2024 second rounder on the table. That is going to be a top 40 pick in this draft and unless a contender was offering their (late) 2024 first rounder, then that is probably about as good as one can expect.
Time will say. The deadline is still seven weeks away, though every season one or two contenders try to strike first and be proactive, conducting their business well in advance.

It must be all about money, I imagine. If a deal is basically in place, then a team balances the risk of Monahan getting injured vs the cost of paying his salary for an extra 7 weeks. Bottom line is that the risk of being injured is the same whether he's playing for the Habs or a new team, while the salary is a certainty. Why not wait?
From Hughes' standpoint, and hoping Monahan remains healthy, there's the potential for other teams to suffer injuries to one of their centres, putting even more pressure on them to go for Monahan. Colorado, Vancouver, Carolina, Winnipeg, and probably one or two others who don't immediately come to mind, could use a responsible centre like Monahan who, despite whiffing on that perfect setup from Slaf, still has some goal scoring skill. I still think he expected Slaf to shoot and was waiting for a rebound. Anyway, not only do those teams need a centre badly, some of them could use a goalie as well. Colorado and Carolina fit that description. There might even be the potential for a bigger deal.

I think that Monahan will be of interest to quite a few teams. His cap hit is low at $2M AAV, and the Habs will almost certainly offer to eat 50% of that as part of any deal. Given that the season is half over the acquiring team will be on the hook for at most $500k. That's a bargain for a center that's good in all situations. He should fetch at worst a 2nd round pick.

Not a big deal, but I don't think Hughes is interested in eating any more salary for the guys he's trading. He has one more contract, I believe, that he can retain salary on, and I don't think he'd waste that on Monahan. If 2/3 of the season is done, Monahan's CAP hit will be about $700K. That's not much in today's NHL. Most contenders would be able to manage that amount without the need for the Habs to retain. Naturally, the option is always there if the acquiring team is really tight toward the limit and the deal is sweet enough for Montreal.

Yeah, I think Hughes holds the last retention spot for an Allen or Savard trade.
Regarding Monahan, there are interested teams who could take him right now without retention.

Luke Fox from Sportsnet wrote today about Leafs' interest in Monahan. Of course that does not make it fully sourced info, but I guess we could say it is at least a rumor in mainstream media outlets.
Toronto has a first this year, but they have no seconds in 24, 25, or 26. I think in an ideal world Toronto would like a serious 3C and to push Domi back to the wing. However, the need for a top four d-man, preferably righty, seems more imperious than the need for a third line center.
I am not sure what Hughes is asking for, but if no one bites in order to get out in front of the herd, then I foresee everyone kind of waiting to make their last gasp offer for the top center available (Lindholm) and then urgency will pivot over to Monahan, who is easier to slide in slide-in cap-wise compared to Henrique.

With Treliving in place, instead of Dubas who has more of a vested interest in the current group, I think TO may be coming to the realization that this isn't the right year to go for it. As you point out, that D seriously lacks depth and the goaltending situation is volatile. I doubt they're looking at Monahan because any contract will impact their CAP significantly. The team that REALLY needs him is Carolina, but Dundon is too cheap to pay Montreal's price. Winnipeg also can use him and my guess is they're the team that will end up with him. They have prospects...their first pick this year probably will be around 25 and they had a good experience in a similar situation with Paul Stastny. Colby Barlow and Rutger McGroarty are both AA prospects, but Monahan alone won't get them. I'd avoid Brad Lambert meself, as I'm not impressed the times I've seen him. Peripheral player. No idea how they'd manage it, but that first rounder is always about right.

Lindholm going to the Canucks suddenly gives Hughes more leverage to move Monahan. Hopefully, let the bidding war begin in earnest.

For sure, a handful of teams are going to pivot hard to Monahan now. Hughes will have a few GMs trying to play it cool when they phone him tonight/tomorrow but, in reality, a feeling of professional desperation must have crept over those guys when they heard the news.

The return for Lindholm, from what I understand so far is Kuzmenko, Hunter Brzustewicz and Canucks first rounder. So …a bad contract, an A prospect and a first rounder. Lindholm has the same points as Monahan and is much the same type of player. Monahan is 2 moths older.
This return bodes well for Hughes. Kuzmenko is signed thru next season.

Post by folatre on Jan 31, 2024 21:41:55 GMT -5
Well, this season's performance would suggest Kuzmenko is neither a high end player nor a good contract. However, he had 39 goals last season. So the truth may be somewhere in the middle. Brzustewicz is a nice d-prospect playing great in his D+1 season over there in Kitchener, but I am not sure he is truly an A level prospect.
Conroy did fine by pulling the trigger now: a first rounder, at worst an intriguing roster player who delivered in the league last year, and a worthwhile prospect on the back end.
Lindholm may love Vancouver or maybe he will not; the Canucks may somehow find cap space to table a contract offer that meets his expectations or maybe they cannot (Pettersson will be getting a raise in the $4-4.5 range). Time will say. Primarily it depends on whether Tocchet's boys can go on a playoff run.

My guess is Lindholm remains a rental. You should pay your difference makers and the Canucks have done that. Pettersson and Hronek have to be extended (both have 1 year of control left) and you have to keep those two. Then they have a number of UFA's (Cole, Myers, Zadorov, Blueger, Joshua, DeSmith, and Lafferty) to resign, so after they extend Petey and Hronek, they'll have about $15MM to fill our 9 more roster spots. Strangely enough, Noah Juulsen has played well enough to fit into a 3rd pair. I've watched him play and he's greatly improved. Checked one guy into the Canucks bench (and yes, it was an opposing player, not a teammate). He moves the puck well and quickly. I don't think he's transferable to the 2nd pair, but he's a very capable 5 or 6. Our buddy Noah, 26 years old and probably about where he should be with being drafted at #26. I think he'd be a 2nd pair guy without the injuries, and with our current management helping the development at an earlier age.
