Two other factors that are consequences of this trade:
1. Hughes is definitely not going for an unlikely playoff spot this season. This team will struggle without Monty for the rest of the season. Good news is it should mean more ice time for younger guys. The tank nation crew should be thrilled. Bring on Demidov 😝
2. The Habs have other valuable trade deadline assets in open contract spots (44 of 50 only used) and cap space, so they can be a third party broker at the deadline and take on a cap dump for assets.

The pick from Calgary will potentially be Florida's 1st rounder from 2025. That would likely be a late 1st rounder. If Newhook was acquired for the 31st and 37th pick and Dach obtained for the 13th and 66th then I think packaging Monahan and that 2025 pick is something right down HuGo's alley. Obtaining Kakko or another similarly aged player will cost a bit. Both the Dach and Newhook trades made me a bit uncomfortable at the time and I expect to have the same feeling if the Habs obtain another project. I have similar thought about the 5,6 or 7 pick but think that Flames pick may be in play. What I'm hoping, (shooting flies off the far wall like Jed and Jethro Clampett used to do) is that Florida suffers the perfect storm of injuries, scandals, turnover etc in 2024/25 and misses the playoffs. If that happens, Calgary does not get Florida's 2025 pick and it opens up much juicier scenarios involving a top 10 pick. At least that's the way I read this convoluted deal. From Capfriendly, The Tkachuk/Huburdeau deal: Florida Panthers Acquire: Matthew Tkachuk 2025 4th round pick (CGY) [Conditional]* *Conditions: If the 2025 1st RD pick that Florida sent to Calgary is a lottery pick resulting in Calgary receiving Florida's 2026 1st RD pick instead, then the 2025 4th RD pick that Calgary sent to Florida also slides to 2026. Get out your voodoo dolls, fellas.

He may not have used a late-round pick in the Sean Monahan deal but, as you pointed out, Kent Hughes isn't shy about using his draft picks to land the players he wants ... where is the attention going next ... David Savard? ... Cheers.
