It's a balancing act, though. You don't want to move those guys a year too late, so the trick is trading them when they still look like they can contribute, to you and to the other team, but soon enough that they lose that value shortly after. Obviously, this is not news to any of us, but like so many things in life, there's the decision and then there's the execution of that decision. Hughes and Gorton have managed this reasonably well, with Monahan, Toffoli and Petry. Lehkonen was more of a gamble because he was younger, but not quite young enough to remain part of the core.
Maybe.
It looked like it at the time, but may prove to be the wrong decision. That uncertainty was due to execution. Barron looked like the right fit at the time because of age, position, etc.. It isn't working out so far, but that will happen too. HuGo aren't infallible, but they've done pretty well so far.
Next year is a make or break for Barron, Harris and kovacevic so they need icetime to show what they can do.
The Habs have made a commitment to Savard, he isn't going anywhere
We are always talking about players should give hometown discounts to play in Montreal. Savard is actually one that did it. He took $750,000 a year less to play in Montreal because he noticed his kids were not speaking French, even at home. So he wanted them in French schools in Quebec. He was visibly stressed when his name popped up in rumours, not wanting to move out of Quebec. The Habs told him he was never on the block, but he still was worried. I don't think Hughes / Gorton are going to consider moving him.
