Let's see who among us can predict the #5 draft pick for the Habs. I see all these "Mock drafts" and don't know how these talking heads have a clue how things will unfold. Anyway, i have not put any defenceman in the poll as I see it unlikely HuGo will pick one as by the time the 5th pick comes around it will be pretty even between calibre of dman and forward and Habs need a high end forward. But if you think a dman is in the cards pick "Other" and make your prediction. I also encourage you to set out in your post who you want HuGo to pick and then we'll see 5 years from now if you know what you're talking about. i think HuGo will pick Lindstrom. I'm not worried about his injuries. However, I want them to pick Iginla. Even if iginla is a bust, we can send him to the Flames for their first round pick 5 years from now

I picked Catton but I don't think they will pick him, they go with Demidov if he available, if not, then a toss up between Lindstrom and Iginla... of the 2 they take Iginla imo...

Eisermann is a secret code word for Hoffman V2. Hard pass. There are so many players I would like to draft so any of Eiserman, Davidov or Catton will work and at least one of them will be there at 5. Don’t disappoint me for the third straight year.

Eisermann is a secret code word for Hoffman V2. Hard pass. Agree 100%. Who do I think they will pick? Because it's a shotgun type scattered draft, with many possibilities before 5, I'll throw out 2 names. The first is Beckett Sennecke (if Demidov is gone) and Zeev Buium if Sennecke and Demidov are gone.

And do we need another lefty on D?

I think Buium is the best d-man prospect aside from Levshunov. However, I have no idea if Habs' management would consider him as more valuable to Montreal over the next 5-7 seasons than Iginla, Lindstrom, Catton, or Sennecke.
I pray Demidov falls to #5 and Montreal does the obvious thing and takes him. But the way things are trending after that little workout fest/meet and greet event put on by Dan Milstein in Florida, even if Chicago does not pick the Russian, I still think he is gone before the Habs select.
Honestly, it is hard to say among 18 year old kids who among the aforementioned four prospects will turn out to be the best player. I think on pure talent on hockey smarts, Catton is the one. But when you factor in size Lindstrom and Sennecke would like pretty nice in a Habs sweater too. And with Iginla, I sort of see him as having the safest floor among those four forwards.

We need scoring....we have everything else. Demidov or Catton....if we can't get one of them...trade it. Who they'll draft and who I'd like them to draft are two different things ... I took notice of Beckett Sennecke since Grant McCagg put him on my radar ... this is the guy I'd like the Habs to draft ... that said, depending on who I'm reading, Cayden Lindstrom comes across as the next Cam Neely, or the next Turner Stevenson ... if he's there at #5, I think the Habs will snap him up ... they've also held serious talks with Cole Eiserman ... I've read a lot of negatives about Eiserman, but I also read that he acknowledges the criticism on him and that he was going to work hard on his defensive game ... is he telling the truth ... dunno, but I have a red flag when I think of Ivan Demidov, also ... there is a 'Russian factor' to consider ... not sure how long they'll continue to allow Russians out of their country, with no end in sight to the war ... the only concern I have with Berkly Catton, is his size ... still, while he's listed at 5'10" and Cotton has pull-away speed, the hands and the hockey IQ (read of these traits online) to make a difference ... Catton comes across as having the drive of Brendan Gallagher and the hands of a younger Rick Middleton (those are only opinions) ... wouldn't it be a story if the Habs not only passed on Jerome Iginla ( 1995), who turns out to be a HHoFer, then pass on his son, Tij, who goes on to have a similar career ... as for the question, I think they'll take Lindstrom, if he's still available, but I'd prefer Sennecke ... Cheers.

I suppose Hutson is likely to be the main point producer on the back end, but will he be able to go up against the opponent’s best players at the same time? I have my doubts. You’re right though, it’s no fun to just keep drafting defensemen. But Buium can play the right side and has the right stuff to become our #1 D. It’s been well documented how every cup winner has one, and to be honest, I don’t think we have much of a chance of acquiring one in free agency or trade.

You're #1 D man doesn't have to be the highest point producer on the back end, your #1 D needs to be a rock solid minute muncher who can play against the other teams top players. Our focus has to be getting more scoring right now which is why Hughes has to make a trade for an NHL ready player, if that means moving the 5th pick, so be it... don't think we can wait 3 or 4 years for that pick to join the team

I think he’s extremely valuable but he’s more of a complement on the top pairing. Guhle can shut down the opposition and does a fine job getting the puck out of our zone, but Buium can do all of that plus reliably turn it into offense, odd man rushes, etc. If our best players can only neutralize the opponents’ best players, we’ll be relying on our team depth to win games. At a certain point, we’ll need our own Makar, Heiskanen, etc. I think we could use more elite talent on D and I see this draft as a way to get it IF the top forwards are off the board already. But I definitely prefer drafting Buium, a potential elite defenseman, over a complementary winger.

This should be our last chance to get a high end forward who can put the puck in the net to tge tune of 40 goal a year... because next year we better not be drafting 5th... better be in the 15 to 20 range

I think our own pick should be in the range you mentioned, but I'm hoping that the perfect storm hits Florida (are they really inclined to go through the rigors a third year in a row). They've won the damn thing, so maybe a rest is in order for a year or two. Add in the lack of new young talent coming in, the need to replace 11 UFA's and Bobrovsky's inconsistencies and there is a 30% chance they miss the playoffs, perhaps even higher if the injury bug hits.
This isn't a plan, it's a hope, but we may again be underrating our own guys. Guhle had 28 points in 17 games with Prince Albert in his draft year. After being traded to the Oil Kings, that fell to 25 in 25 and then 16 points in 19 playoff games where he was injured a bit. The kid knows how to score. He had a couple (at least) of 2 point games with the Habs. He's been asked to play on his wrong side and he's been expected to be the 'safe' guy while Matheson goes for broke. I think he'll be a very good if not excellent top pair defenseman. Top 10 in the NHL, IMO, in 2-3 years. Is that good enough? He may not be a Makar or Hughes, but if you combine a top 10 player with a bunch of other top 30-40 guys, is that not an elite defense group? Hutson, Mailloux and Reinbacher have that potential. Struble, Engstrom and Harris are all, or will be, solid 3rd pair guys. It's going to be a very strong group of 6. The Blues and Knights won a cup with Pietrangelo as their elite dman. Can Guhle be as good as Pietrangelo? Alex has averaged .45 ppg in his career. Guhle is averaging .35 ppg in his first 2 years, with all kinds of baggage around him. I also have no doubt he'll be as good defensively as Pietrangelo. Pietrangelo seems like a good comparable.
Anyway, I'm not as worried about our D, but another really good top 6 guy to go with Dach and Roy and we're off to the races.

I don't understand how guys that have little to no NHL experience can be considered untouchable. It all depends on what is coming back. Remember, most of us, me included, were surprised to see Romanov traded.

And most fans consider all 4 untouchable If we are going to reduce the number of very good players and prospects we should stock up on future years first round draft picks. We have too many defenseman and our own picks in future years will not be 5th or better. Trading for overpriced forwards will not build a team. Florida was full of hard working lunch pail speedsters taking the body and working hard as a team. Two michigans a year is not the route to the cup! Build a cup team, not a bunch of hilight reels.

Daigneault was older (28?) and there was Ramage, but he only played 7 games in the playoffs. Everyone else was 22, 23, 24. Struble - Guhle Hutson - Reinbacher Xhekaj - Savard. Harris, Engstrom, Mailloux Too young still probably. The tricky part is finding time at the NHL level for a number of kids who deserve to be there. Mailloux has served his time in Laval, as has Struble. Hutson might need a bit of seasoning there, but he looked ok in that 2 game stint at the end of the season. The Wings weren't on cruise control, they were fighting hard for a playoff spot and Hutson looked absolutely at home and very aggressive at times. Then you have Reinbacher who might need another 20 games or so in Laval, but probably that's all. The better time would be next summer to move Matheson or at the TDL this coming February, IF the young guys have acclimated themselves well. Mailloux

i don't see any rush to be trading any of our young D unless there is an incredible offer on the table. We may make the playoffs this year but that's about it. Let's see how these youngins develop before we give up on any of them. Altho i doubt Barron or Struble are better than 3rd pairing guys, so I'm OK with giving up on them. But X, Guhle, Mailloux, Lane and Reinbacher are all on schedule for what we hoped, so let it play out. As for Math-aint-my-strength, he better not be untouchable. And now may be a good time to trade him as some gms seem to think he's elite. He's an elite skater but otherwise below average in all other aspects. Although he is from Mtl and speaks both languages . And I'm not so sure he's the guy you want our prospects learning from, as he has little to pass on.

You can see Matheson talking to Mailloux during play, and even after he was finished his pass, Matheson turned to Mailloux and was giving him feedback as the play went on. Skilly is right. We need the right mix and the right kind of veterans to lead and guide the kids. Matheson and Savard aren’t my favourite hockey players but they’ve been doing a great job with the kids imo. That being said… once the kids are ready to fly we can’t hold them back. I think we’ll know when they’re ready.
