Tarasenko to the Red Wings 2x 4.5. Again, Would have been a pickup for us, if we were in on it. If we were, who chooses Michigan over Montreal 😆

Boys, unless Hughes pulls off a hockey trade or two this summer, the roster is basically set.

Before he was injured Newhook was on pace for 25 goals and 50 points. That's a lot better than 3rd line production. And despite the injury he was able to maintain that PPG pace. You're not alone Silly. Newhook would thrive on the 2nd line with Dach or 3rd line with a guy like Beck, the reason for Newhook on the 3rd is that gives us 3 scoring lines who are defensively aware... death by a thousand cuts

Basically, Montreal did not come in second place because they did not even care to get in the ballpark on Marchessault or Perron because I think Hughes drew the line at one year for Perron and three years for Marchessault.

I expect next year Hughes might bring in a veteran presence since we will have 12M coming off the books between dead cap and Dvorak/Armia... we also open up 2 buyout slots...

Hughes is no Burgerbrain... he has a plan that is well thought out and he knows what he wants which is long term cup contention and he's not interested in shortcuts

I am a bit surprised nobody has signed winger Daniel Sprong yet. He is still only 27 and is likely good for 20 goals on a relatively affordable deal (or even cheap deal as time passes). Decent option for secondary scoring without likely breaking the bank, taking away a spot from younger guys too long into the future, etc.
Someone is also going to offer a “show me” deal to once highly regarded scoring winger Filip Zadina too. Although he has fizzled out with a few teams now, I can see a deal similar to what the Habs did with Lias Andersson last season. He seems too young to be a total bust, although who knows about the work ethic, attitude or any other off ice stuff that may be the main reason holding him back.
I am sure there were guys that Hughes was interested in but just got priced out either from term or from aav, or both. I am resigned to being okay with that given where the team is in the rebuild this season, but I wonder just how aggressive and successful he will be starting next year when some of those horrible legacy contracts started dropping off and the team will likely have to show a much bigger commitment to at least fighting for the playoffs and winning more than treading water while the young guys develop. Montreal is a tough market for long rebuilds. Big parts of the media and fan base can be ruthless.

I'm pretty confident in Hugo's ability to move this forward and I'm sure Molson is very happy seeing how things are progressing, so I don't think some crusty fans and media will dissuade them from the path they are on... If the media voices get loud prematurely.. it's up to Gorton and Molson to put them in their place.

Montreal is a tough market for long rebuilds. Big parts of the media and fan base can be ruthless. Sometimes it’s all just a name. Retool, rebuild. We have spent three years in tear down more than rebuild. We have added a few draft picks but the superstars haven’t arrived. Cap space really hasn’t been a problem. A concerned owner would be questioning the lack of playoff revenue. Molson is more concerned with Molson-COORS than the Hab’s Remember how he offered Bergevin another year contract to stay. The kids will take time to develop but we value them more highly than tha other 31 GMs. Caufield may put in a great 80 game season, Slafkovsky may become a superstar and the rest can improve 30%. Our overcrowded defense of juniors shows promise but we are in a very deep hole and a 30% improvement may not be enough. Better times are a bead but there are 31 other teams ahead of us and they are improving too. Well maybe not the leafs.

Four consecutive years without a playoff birth will make me pretty grumpy, both from a pride perspective and historically. While HuGo may stay focussed on the long term plan, there's a limit to how long fans can go on the "we'll be a good team soon" mantra,

I'll be interested to see who we hire to run the powerplay...IMHO a better than average power play will put just about any team into the playoffs.

Four consecutive years without a playoff birth will make me pretty grumpy, both from a pride perspective and historically. While HuGo may stay focussed on the long term plan, there's a limit to how long fans can go on the "we'll be a good team soon" mantra, There is one overriding reason for UFA's going to a particular team, and that is winning or the immediate prospect of winning. Why are some guys jumping to sign in Edmonton? It's the prospect of winning a Cup. Habs wise, we aren't near that point yet, but we will be. Hughes tried this year with Marchessault but would not go past 3 years, for obvious reasons. Marchessault got 5. Where did he sign? Nashville, who have gone all in as their best players age. Any UFA chase this year and next will be short term, unless the UFA is around the age of 25-26. We have too many good young kids who will have to be paid, to have an expensive, average type of player around taking up CAP space. I'm perfectly happy to continue at the current pace. We should be 15 points, at least, better next year, be making the playoffs the following year and be a real cup contender the year after, when a Cup winning UFA could be added to shrink the usual sequence of losing before finally winning the Cup. It doesn't HAVE to be that way and it involves luck, but we've had plenty of bad luck with injuries the last few years, so fate owes us.

For sure, friends, the thought of a fourth year out of the playoffs is frustrating but management needs to stay the course for now. The team should be better, whether that will be enough to grab a wild card remains to be seen. But now there is a true difference maker in the pipeline, so I believe there is a considerable amount of optimism about 2025-26. Molson is smart enough to see this. He knows seasons ticket holders are not throwing in the towel with Demidov on the way.
Four would be tough. Though, just to keep things in perspective, if Detroit misses it will be 9 straight, if Ottawa misses that's 8, and if the long-suffering Sabres miss the playoffs that will be a truly inconceivable 14 seasons.

Oh I think it is pretty much a given we aren't making the playoffs next year so I would rather have another top 3 pick than finishing 12th worse from the bottom.
Next summer could be interesting though. Draistl, Rantonen, Crosby and Marner could all be FA of they decide to go to market. That would be when to use so.e of that powder.

Yeah, for sure, I get that. But I think it is preferable that Montreal continues to stride forward (in St. Louis' first full season they improved 13 points over the Ducharme titanic campaign, then this season even with the Dach injury they moved ahead another 8 points). So honestly I would rather get close to 90 points because that would mean a lot of guys who are part of the future took another step.
There could be some spicy UFAs next summer, though they could all end up re-signing for the clubs they have played their entire career for. One always has to wonder if the Habs move up into the contention range (floor of 90 points) in 2024-25 could a guy like Crosby at least have it cross his mind that it would be cool to pull on the sweater he loved when he was a kid and play with a kid like Demidov on a team possibly ready for a breakthrough.

The 90 points is where I have them. One ignoramous on Twitter has them finishing 31st next year with 68 points. So much hinges on Dach's health. He takes pressure off the top line and is the possession monster for, say Newhook, and Roy. Load up the top 6 with our kids and put the vets on the bottom 6, along with one or two of our other youngsters (Beck later in the season, Heineman). We'll just miss the playoffs, finishing ahead of Florida , and still get a top 5 pick because Calgary will plummet.

So if the panthers fall on hard times and they have a lottery pick the following happens.. In the 1st sub-scenario above I can't see the Flames not being in the bottom 10 of the league so I don't think it applies Then sub-scenario 2 kicks in, which means we get the 2025 CGY 1st rounder or a 2026 1st rounder from either CGY or FLA. We need the panthers to be in the bottom 16 of the league...

I don't want us to trade that pick until we have a better handle on Florida's standings next season. My far fetched hypothesis depends entirely on the Panthers collapsing and not being in the playoffs. This has happened before, 2007 to the Hurricanes and 2015 to the Kings. An injury to Bobrovsky, or an off year on his part would make this a real possibility. Get your voodoo dolls and secret incantation books out, fellas.

For a long time, thought he was just another Jeff Skinner or Mike Hoffman...a guy with a scorer's reputation, but useless if he wasn't scoring. He may have re-invented himself the last couple of years, but he wasn't good before that. The threat of being out of the NHL will do that to some players. Sprong may be looking for a longer contract than Hughes is willing to offer. Our CAP situation in 3-4 years is really important.

I believe if a club valued him in the 3x3 contract range, Sprong would have already signed it. Despite having a solid campaign with Seattle in 2022-23, he only got a one year/$2 million deal from Detroit. Sprong has played for five NHL clubs in seven seasons. I am not quite sure what makes teams lukewarm about a winger like him. Maybe injuries have been a factor, maybe it is being a below average defensively. So I would imagine the player's agent is mainly trying to find his client a bit of stability.
