I hear lots of talk about our bash brothers on defense ... Guhle-Xhekaj-Mailloux But why is no one talking about this guy?? He's a left darn it... if he can play the right side...

The Devils have a more talented forward group than the Habs and Mercer is top six there. We all agree Demidov will be top six from day one. But who is the other guy you have mind? Hage? I really liked the pick but I am not labeling him a can't miss top six NHLer. That is not taking a swipe at him because that is generally how I feel about most kids taken in the middle of the first round. Roy? He is another kid I like a lot and I think he can play top six with the right mates but if Montreal had someone who is a more proficient goal scorer than him, Roy would be fine on a strong two-way third line. Right now, our second line in 2025-26 is projecting to be Demidov-Dach-Newhook. Unless we acquire better than Newhook. Right now, Newhook is equal if not better than Mercer. If Newhook stays healthy this year and produces at the same rate he did last year, that is a 50+ point season. And as Cranky said, we'd have wasted assets to provide what we already have. I realize your arguement is to put Newhook on the third line. But that would be wasting his potential. If dvo doesn't come back and Beck is not ready, Newhook will have to be the 3C until Beck is ready... Evans cannot be the 3C. This means Roy jumps up to the 2nd line. Of course this is dependant on how Roy does this year but I think he can fit in on the 2nd line, if Beck makes it then Newhook and Roy will battle it out for the 2nd line left wing. Demidov shoots left but plays Right Wing and Centre

I hear lots of talk about our bash brothers on defense ... Guhle-Xhekaj-Mailloux But why is no one talking about this guy?? Probably because he's more of a project. The other guys move the puck better. Protz was the 102nd pick in the draft (probably higher on Montreal's list), but at that point, he's in that 10-15% probability oddds of making the NHL at all. I've actually heard a bit about him and he was a thoughtful, articulate interview at the development Camp. He's an interesting project and I hope he finds the rest of his game needed to make the team in a few years. It never hurts to have another mean streak Dman.

I have always said I like Newhook better on the wing than at center. And I have said that I feel good about Newhook's ability to score 25 goals. So I certainly want him to play on the second line this season. And let us all hope the 'glass man' (Dvorak) can stay healthy and play good hockey as the 3C until the trade deadline. And additionally, let us all pray that Dach shrugs off the injury prone label and plays 70+ games.

Ok, so we have next season where we should take a good step forward, and then the following season 2025-26 where we should be making the playoffs. We can agree on that as the presumed timeline. Where we differ is that I don’t see how we will get there unless Hugo starts making moves now. - Our current roster should be better than last season’s so that we can take that step forward. I’m not convinced it is. I’m concerned that it’s worse. - Key prospects need to graduate to the big team now. If that doesn’t happen, then in 2025-26 we could have as rookies: Reinbacher, Mailloux, Hutson, Demidov, Beck… that’s a lot of rookies in key positions for a playoff team. - Our young recent graduates like Guhle, Xhekaj, Barron, Struble, Harris, Roy, also need significant playing time this upcoming season in order to keep developing. I suppose trading Kovacevic creates a vacancy (on the right, mind you… even though the surplus is on the left). - We have to figure out where we’re going to play Dach and Newhook so that they get some good experience under their belts in their proper positions. We don’t know if they’re our 2C and 3C or if they will both thrive as wingers. Maybe management wants to leave it up to MSL to figure out where he wants to use them, but the problem is that we won’t know where the holes in our lineup are until that gets sorted out. So we may have to address this topic also in a year or so. - For UFAs, we will have only one more crack at making UFA additions prior to the 2025-26 season. So for our playoff season, not only might we have an influx of several rookies, we may also have some key UFA signings joining the team. That’s a lot of roster turnover in a very short amount of time. This summer was/is an opportunity to spread out the succession. A near overhaul could await if Hugo takes too long to make some moves. Exactly. The only thing I'll add, is that you can't acquire someone and expect chemistry immediately. So, for instance, let's say Laine is available. Wouldn't you want him developing on this team with Dach in preparation for Demidov's arrival? Now it doesn't have to be Laine, it's just an example, but now we are getting precariously close to Dach having to get accustomed to TWO new linemates when it's our supposed playoff year. And if we are as bad this year (experts have us for dead last, some fans see no improvement) then it could be three new additions. Yes, too much talent is a good thing, but you want that talent developed not developing in 25-26. I had a feeling Hughes was was not of the "be patient, this is not the time" mindset. There was too much smoke swirling around a few players.

Yes, he’s not the type to sit on his hands but he combines that with real patience. Most of us would have made a worse deal weeks ago. We would have gotten a nice Chianti. Hughes gets us an Amarone.

I rushed over here to change my vote Not me. I should of phrased the question better, but up until today, I was disappointed. I am actually excited for this season now because we actually added some talent. He might be another Drouin or he could be the next Kovalev, but the one thing he is though is hope. Hope that we are on the upswing.
