Ryan McDonagh got his first career goal as a Wisconsin Badger, and was a +2, in a Badger rout. www.uwbadgers.com/sport_news/mhky/headlines/story.html?sportid=119&storyid=11936I'll be updating this thread from time to time with stats and results of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan, to report on McDonagh, Fischer and Pacioretty. Fischer hasn't had a particularly good start. He was a -2 in a Minnesota loss to Colorado College, and remains pointless after the first game and a pre-season tournament. Pacioretty is also pointless, but does have a ton of shots so far.

I've been thinking about our 06 draft for a while now and my (way too early) impressions are that this is not going to be a draft we're proud of. There are some real question marks surrounding Fischer and Maxwell. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the two guys who make it from our 06 draft are Valentenko and Cepek, our two lowest, where you're rolling the dice or finally giving in to the terrific Russian scout of ours. Cepek is having a decent start to his year with the expansion Edmonton Oil Kings. He's a pure defensive d-man, so don't expect a bunch of points, but expect a lot of heart and likely a good +/-.
Of course, it's still pretty early in the game to be judging these guys. Fischer's progression, especially compared to Valentenko's, is disappointing. I think McDonagh is already far in front of him. I hope Fischer takes a giant leap, but I'm not counting those chickens.

Fischer and Pacioretty both notched their first points for the season last night, both assists. Michigan is getting some prominent play from some freshmen this year, including Pacioretty. Fischer rebounded with a good game. He is getting pp time as well, after a few d-man from Minnesota have graduated.

The Dartmouth Big Green were looking for someone to step up with the big loss of Lee Stempniak (?) to STL this past season, and that guy has been an unlikely hero so far this very short season. In fact, none other than Montreal draft pick JT Wyman from our favourite drafting niche of the state of Minnesota. In fact, James wracked up three points in his first game and two more tonight to lead his team with five points in two games...three more than the next guy so far. Wyman is oft forgotten and a big body who can skate, and is in his final NCAA year so must be drafted by next summer. With younger forwards in the CHL like Maxwell and White in the same contract situation, the older and bigger JT must make a mark. So far so good, as it is not as if the Habs have a lot of power forwards in the making just yet...although Max P did get another assist tonight!!
Philipe Paquet plays his first after an injury and gets an assist tonight as well. A QC born kid who played prep school in the USA as well as NCAA hockey, so a whole lot below the radar screen as well. Not sure yet how he will stack up against our bevvy of new young D recruits, but yet another brick in the wall.

Fairly non-descript games by McDonagh and Fischer this week. MaxP did get an assist, and co-led his team in shots. He is getting a ton of them.
If the Big 10 network replays any of the big three teams this week, I'll add some commentary.

Wyman had two more points to now have 7 in 3 games. Plenty of rest between games for sure, but a decent offensive outburst from a guy who has been relatively quiet in his first three seasons at Dartmouth.
Off the top of my head, I think the last few Minnesotans on the team were Sean Hill and Tom Kurvers (I will google this later), but Wyman could start a flood of new recruits from the Land of 10,000 frozen backyard rinks.

Fischer had two assists this past weekend as did Max Pacioretty. Wyman had two goals as well to bring his point total to 9 points in his first 5 games. McDonagh played but was held pointless. Paquet was injured this past weekend, and his status is unknown after missing the start of the season with an injury.

Steady progress, and especially comforting to see that Fischer is scoring more too. He's an asset I would rather not write off.
Tks for the updates, NWT.

Steady progress, and especially comforting to see that Fischer is scoring more too. He's an asset I would rather not write off. Tks for the updates, NWT. As a freshman out of high school he was quite down on the depth chart last season in a program that has a winning tradition and takes its college hockey seriously. That is one big college rink that is full to the rafters. So, he was able to make a relatively quiet adjustment into the NCAA game playing against much older and stronger players. This season, the Gophers lost three of their top defensemen, so Fischer has been thrust into a much more important role, as have others on his team. It has been an adjustment and hopefully things are starting to settle down more and he is getting more comfortable in his new role. He is still a bit raw, but the skill set is there if he can get it all going. The nice thing about all these NCAA prospects is that the Habs can take their time with them as they don't have to sign them in the two years that applies for CHL and European drafted players. Fischer can still play this season and two others at Minnesota if that is what the team feels is best for his development. First rounders don't usually last their full four years in the NCAA.

There is a freshman playing US college hockey for UCLA. Skates like Corey Locke, stickhandles like Mike Ribeiro, shot like Terry Harper and hits like JC Tremblay. Playing on a weak team in a weak PAC 8 league he still is undrafted and not likely to be drafted. Shown lots of improvement but still has a long way to go. None of Ryders talent but twice the desire. Who says life is fair?

It is starting to look like the top of the 2007 draft will pay some nice dividends in the near future.
Max P had a solid game with 1 goal, 1 assist, and 8 shots. He now has 2 goals, 7 assists over 11 games, including the pre-season tournament. He is second on his team in shots. Pretty prominent play by a freshman. He may turn out to be the power forward the Habs have lacked for a long time.
Ryan McDonagh had another assist, and has 4 in 8 games. He looks very comfortable and makes good decisions.
Also, David Fischer had a goal, and was plus two in a Minnesota shut out.
J.T. Wyman had another goal last night, and is 5th nationally in points per game.

A goal tonight for Max against Ryan McD's Wisconsin team, and it was the GWG to boot.
3g 9a 12 pts on a 9 game point streak for the freshman who started off with 4 games without a point.

RDS has been running some reports on our boys... loosely translated: Trevor Timmins sees Ryan McDonagh as a future Chris CheliosOver the last two years the Canadiens have drafted an American defenseman in the first round of the amateur draft. Last June, it was Ryan McDonagh who was this first selection, a rearguard who is undergoing his first season with the University of Wiscconsin Badgers. There were some mutterings in the corridors of Quebec when the Canadeins turned their back on Angelo Esposito to make McDonagh their first choice. But the 6’1, 200lbs defenseman from St. Paul, Minnesota has adapted extremely well to American university hockey. He is a very fluid skater, excels at both ends of the ice and simply needs to acquire a little bit more experience. « My skating is certainly my best asset. » says McDonagh. « He is quite the skater, » confirmed his coach, Mike Eaves, « And no matter what level you play, you have to skate. He wins his battles on the boards, makes a good first pass and has very nice ice visions.” McDonagh seems like an impact defenseman who excels at both ends of the ice and who can change the course of a game with a solid body check. « He plays as much on the power-play as on the penalty-kill. I wouldn’t qualify him as a pure quarter-back, because he plays just as well at both ends of the ice.” repeats Trevor Timmins, director of scouting for the Canadiens. McDonagh’s style is difficult to compare to. One thing for sure, he wants to become a complete defenseman who can help the Canadiens on a regular basis much quicker than we can imagine. « I want to have more than one dimension to my play, » explains McDonagh. “I concentrate first on defense, but I also want to contribute to the attack.” « He has a bit of the same style as Chris Chelios » states Timmins. “I don’t want to compare him to Chris, but the way he plays looks an awful lot like him. He’s a player who is going to have a long career, who is going to spend a lot of time on the ice and who brings a lot of leadership.” RDS Video

Max Pacioretty surprises at MichiganWith their second choice in the first round last June, the Canadiens selected Max Pacioretty, a forward from the University of Michigan. With Josh Gorges he is the other player obtained in the trade that sent Craig Rivet to the San Jose Sharks. It ‘s a good thing that Pacioretty figured in the plans of the Canadiens scouting director Trevor Timmins. The left winger played last year with Sioux City, an American junior league, where he scored 63 points in 60 games. The 22nd choice in the last draft is having a good start to his universtity career with 12 points in 13 games for the Michigan Wolverines, the best university team for out neighbors to the south. “I’m trying to be more consistent. I have to be intese on every one of my shifts on the ice.” says Pacioretty. The renowned Wolverines trainer, Red Berenson, has seen many and he is thrilled with the play of Pacioretty, who he doesn’t hesitate to play on the first line, despite his being a green rookie. “I was surprised by the powerr of his skating. He’s strong, and he has good hands. He also knows how to play without the puck. We use him in all situations and that’s very shocking for a player of his age.” “He is the type of player that is extremely difficult to acquire in a trade or as a free agent.” assures Timmins. The Canadiens are convinced they have drafted a forward in the same mold as Erik Cole, of the Carolina Hurricanes. «He also plays like Ryan Smyth. He is a power forward who can also score goals.” says Timmins. A savoir si Pacioretty se développera comme un attaquant de puissance qui jouera sur les deux premiers trios du Canadien ou comme un excellent joueur de troisième trio, il faudra attendre encore un peu. «Third line players are usually imposing and use their size, which I also do. But I also think I am capable of developing into a first line player, not a third liner,” predicts Pacioretty. "Les joueurs de troisième trio sont généralement imposants et utilisent leur gabarit, ce que je fais moi aussi. Je crois toutefois être capable de me développer pour devenir un joueur de premier plan, pas un joueur de troisième trio", prévoit Pacioretty. RDS Video

David Fischer’s MarathonOver the last two years the Canadiens have drafted two American defenseman in the first round. In June of 2006 David Fischer became the property of the Tricolore, and this year he is playing his second season with the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers. The Canadiens drafted the right-handed defenseman from Apple Valley High School in Minnesota. At six feet, three inches Fischer has a good reach and counts on his above average offensive instincts. «We drafted him from high school as an offensive player. His reach and his size will also make him a defenseman who excels on the defense.” declares Canadiens director of scouting Trevor Timmins. « My coach has given me much more responsibilities this season. I’m trying to have an impact on my team, no matter what role I play.’ says Fischer. Even if he is 19 years old and he was drafted a year earlier, Fischer is probably a little bit behind this year’s first round pick, Ryan McDonagh. Fischer’s adaptation to American university hockey has been more difficult, and Fischer also underwent surgery at the end of the summer. "Ryan McDonagh seems more physically ready than Fischer is at this moment." specifiees Timmins. Fischer had his tonsils removed last August, and lost a lot of weight, which makes him look a little frail, but he still remains an important prospect for the organization and he’s working hard to become an impact defenseman for the Canadiens. "I have to work on my physical strength, my speed and my shot. I hope to use this season to become better. I don’t see my development as a sprint, but more like a marathon.” At every level he has played at Fischer was the best player on his team, and was named Mister Hockey for Minnesota, in 2005-06. For the first time in his career he is facing some adversity and from here until the end of the season the Canadiens will know what type of player they have in their 2006 first round pick. RDS Video

RDS has been running some reports on our boys... loosely translated: Geeze, where do you get the time BC? Thanks for the info. I'm especially fond at this time of Pacioretty. To be at nearly a PPG pace for a freshman in the CCHA or WCHA is pretty darn good. There was also a comment (can't recall who to attribute it to) from the US World Juniour tryout camp earlier this year, that he was the 2nd best player on the ice after Patrick Kane. Not a bad endorsement. If we ever lose Timmins and the scouting boys, I think I'll jump off the Lion's Gate bridge.

2 more assists for Ryan McDonagh, and a +2 in a Wisconsin victory. This kid is extremely poised for a freshman defenseman. His decision making is sound (knows when to pinch and otherwise commit to defending) and panic threshold is low.
