Good to see Wyman join the fold.
Paquet's team after a great season were upset in the ECAC playdowns, in what should have been a path to the NCAA championships.
Wisconsin and McD are on the bubble and will be watching the weekend playoffs with huge interest to see if they sneak in, but they no longer control their own destiny. The whole Pairwise ranking system is quite complex and will only render its results after all the games are done.
Minnesota in a big sudden death game on Thursday against St Cloud State.
Edit - Clarkson and Wisconsin will know their fate to see if they make it to the Frozen Four on Sunday once all these playoff games are done.

i remembered last year that the nhl network broadcast some of the games, can we try to keep each other on top of potential broadcasts on this thread? thanks!

i remembered last year that the nhl network broadcast some of the games, can we try to keep each other on top of potential broadcasts on this thread? thanks! They are showing the ECAC semis on Friday, but alas, Paquet and Clarkson were beaten in the last series so miss out on some Canadian TV coverage. Will update if they add more games that have a Hab connection.

Fischer and co get a HUGE win tonight against St Cloud State. The Gophers were 0-4-3 going into this game against their cross state rival, so far from a favourite to get to the WCHA semis. Fischer with an assist in the big game.
This sure helps their cause getting into the big show. Good to see!!
19,300+ saw this game in St Paul...wow. Wonder why Timmins and company scout this part of the world...it is not for lack of interest in hockey.

Caught some high school games there recently - they're crazy for hockey all right.... 8000+ in the stands, with all the atmosphere of a college football game. Loads of fun, and let me tell you, those kids take winning their high school and state championships seriously... they don't grow up wanting to win the Stanley Cup, they grow up wanting to win their high school championship!

This song says it all, albeit not from a Minnesota venue.
Be True to Your School....The Beach Boys.
When some loud braggart tries to put me down And says his school is great I tell him right away "now what's the matter buddy Ain't you heard of my school It's number one in the state"
So be true to your school now Just like you would to your girl or guy Be true to your school now And let your colors fly Be true to your school
I got a letterman's sweater With a letter in front I got for football and track I'm proud to wear it now When I cruise around The other parts of the town I got a decal in back
So be true to your school now Just like you would to your girl or guy Be true to your school now And let your colors fly
On friday we'll be jacked up on the football game And i'll be ready to fight We're gonna smash 'em now My girl will be working on her pom-poms now And she'll be yelling tonight
So be true to your school now Just like you would to your girl or guy Be true to your school now And let your colors fly Be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school Rah rah rah be true to your school Rah rah rah be true to your school Rah rah rah be true to your school

A Max-less Michigan won 6-4 tonight to advance to the conference final. He will return from his one game suspension for that next game.
Fischer's Golden Gophers won a thrilling 2-1 OT game tonight against a strong Colorado College team to advance to the WCHA finals tomorrow night. Only 17,000 in attendance tonight, so must have been like a church in there!! This really helps their cause to reach the NCAA tournament.

Although I have friends who study(ied) in the US, I think I will never completely understand how college sport works. But hey, it sounds like the prospects are doing well, so I guess I can only congratulate them!

So, Minnesota and Clarkson's seasons are now over.
Wisconsin plays North Dakota today with the winner going to the Frozen Four.
Michigan, with their win yesterday, have their berth in the Frozen Four.

Wisconsin well on their way to an upset victory. 2-0 Wisconsin through 2 periods. Only just tuned in, so I have no idea about McDonagh yet. www.hockeywebcasts.com/ has a link to a SOPcast, if you know how to use it you can tune in for the 3rd period.

ND scored two quickly to tie it up. 2-2 with 14 minutes left. ND is skating harder than Wisconsin so far in the 3rd period.

Going to OT at 2-2.
McDonagh had a mediocre period, but also took a 2 minute "Contact to Head" penalty for roughing up TJ Oshie.

Fischer one assist, atlhough his team did lose to Boston College 5-2 tonight. I watched the whole game between Minnesota and BC. Must say I was quite disappointed with how much of a non-factor Fischer was in this game. He was on the ice early in the game in some key situtations, including killing a 4-on-3 BC powerplay (in which BC scored). He made kind of a bad play trying a swipe the puck away from a forward who passed in front for the goal. This was about mid-way through the 1st period and he was pretty much invisible after that. I don't think I counted more than 8 shifts for him the entire game which is highly disappointing from a #1 pick finishing his second full season of NCAA hockey. It wasn't so much the lack of skills that stood out but rather the general hesitancy and lack of assertiveness on the ice. He just looks like he's going through the motions out there. No fire. He has good size at 6-3 and he looks big on the ice but he doesn't use it. I don't know if he has a hard time processing the game at the higher speed from high school (not a good sign) or he's just not a happy kid right now. The commentators said something about this being a difficult year for Fischer but didn't expand on it - I think he's generally in the doghouse with the coach and I can see why. On the plus side, you can see all the attributes that made him a high pick. Good size, good skating, positionally sound, makes crisp passes... but it doesn't add up. I don't want to write the kid off - many said the same things about Ron Hainsey but Hainsey was a dominant player in a very good Hockey East conference who racked up tons of points. Fischer looks like just another guy right now.

NHL scouts overrate those Minnesota high school stars. Blake Wheeler, Brian Lee, Fischer, and McDonagh. The best kids from the state go to the WHL, the USHL, or the NTDP, when they are 15 or 16. That makes the ones who stay seem better than they are, relative to their peers. Max Pacioretty who came from Connecticut and played in the USHL, is a better prospect than McDonagh. So is Nick Petrecki who came from New York to the USHL. Plus at least a couple of the NTDP defensemen who are playing in the East.

You're right that from other states everyone goes to the USHL.

I think it's a little premature to label these players anything just yet. After all, the oldest player you mentioned is 21 years of age. In the case of Lee, Fischer and McDonagh , traditionally defenceman take a while to learn all the aspects of their position , so patience is key when evaluating them. I'm not to familiar with Wheeler but what i do understand is he has improved a lot this season. If I remember right he had strength issues early in his college career ,but over the last couple seasons, Wheeler has added a lot of size. He’s s filling out, and still growing into his frame.

Wheeler took his sweet time, and now Phoenix' patience looks well placed. He looked really good in the few games I have watched of Minny this season checking out Fischer. Lee just got his first cup of coffee with the big club, but not even sure if he has dressed yet. Fischer and McD...I guess we sit back and wait and see. McD seems to have the physical and more complete package than Fischer, despite being a year younger, but I am willing to wait them both out. I like McD's skill set and can see some really nice upside to his game. Fischer is a little harder to read, but the upside is definitely there if he put all the parts together down the road.

You're right that from other states everyone goes to the USHL. I think it's a good point that the developmental leagues in the US are skimming the top talent from the high school ranks, particularly in the Midwest states. The only exception is in New England, where there is no junior alternative, so the prep schools get the best players from the region. It's great hockey and many of these kids feed the college rosters of teams like BC, BU, Maine, etc. Notable players who came out of the prep schools include Jeremy Roenick, Brian Leetch, Keith Tkcachuk, and Kevin Stevens.

Interesting article on Pacioretty; Sadly it's in french for thoughs speaking english only: www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20080405/CPSPORTS0101/804051180/1002/CPSPORTSSeems that Timmons may see him ready to turn pro as early as next season. He does have the size but I always liked seeing a player dominate their league before advancing him. Timmons knows best , I am sure. He sees McDonagh playing at least one more season saying that Max Pac is a little older McDonagh. The article also mentions Subban and Weber's fine playoff showing , so far this season and it may not take them very long to turn pro as Montreal lately is not shy of turning their prospects pro using Price , Lats, D'Ago and S.Kostitsyn as examples. Future looks not only bright but a real crowded roster.

Future looks not only bright but a real crowded roster. Max has two more games to play, and hopefully to be part on a national championship. Another great rookie season by another of our prospects. It will be interesting to see if they sign him this summer. I like seeing McD get another season at Wisconsin. Coach Eaves is good and can only help him develop his overall game. Wisconsin clearly will miss their super Freshman Kyle Turris now he has turned pro, but it would be nice to see them have a stronger season and not just sneak into the NCAAs next season. Weber likely will be signed this summer as he will be 20 in the fall and can play in the AHL. Subban will have to wait until next summer for his contract, but I agree, the cupboard is far from bare. Max is back on the ice next Thursday in their sudden death Frozen Four matchup against Notre Dame, with the winner playing on Saturday for the big show. NHL dot com's bold prediction had Michigan winning on Thursday and Saturday. That is my bold prediction too!!

Max Pac is done for the season as #1 ranked Michigan was upset tonight by Notre Dame 5-4 in OT.
ND got off to a fast 3-0 start in the first. Michigan fought back and even took a 4-3 lead before ND tied it in regulation and won in OT.
Too bad for Max on what was a bit of a dream season for the freshman/rookie.
