Well, I recorded the first game (Sabres v Devils in Prague) of the season this afternoon and now watched portions of it.
The Devils were ready from puck drop and grabbed control early. The Sabres looked disjointed and slow. Markstrom significantly outplayed Luukkonen. Kovacevic continues with that odd (in the sense that I cannot really explain it) knack for scoring goals that he showed in his relatively short time in Montreal. Buffalo's top six was putrid today and I really believe they have serious deficiencies therein that Kevyn Adams did not address in the off-season.
Could Buffalo manage to get swept in Prague tomorrow? Stay tuned...

Am watching the Pens/BlowJackets game. Jordan Harris easily the best Columbus Dman dressed. He’s playing well. Pens have 6 goals in 2 periods and Harris wasn’t on for any of them. Tarasov in goal has been putrid.

Harris is a good kid. Hopefully he does well there. However, Columbus is going through some dark times right now. To be honest, I would be shocked if the Blue Jackets are not bottom five.

That video is hilarious. Poor Reinhardt looked a grade 6 hall monitor telling the captain of the high school hockey team hey you can't do that, I have to take to the principal's office now. Wasn't Reinhardt the dude that Guhle blasted on the first shift last night?
So the hapless Sabres got swept in Prague, scoring two goals total. And they seem to be wracking up injuries to a forward group that already seriously lacks quality. Fun times in Buffalo... Would 14 consecutive years missing the playoffs be an NHL record or perhaps they already set the record?

A good buddy texted me this afternoon while I was at my son's practice -- No Barkov, No Tkachuk, No Bobrovsky. Please tell me the Sabres win.

Jeje, yeah, good for Buffalo.
And I suppose we want serious Cup hangover, injury adversity as possible, etc. for the Panthers since I am convinced that Calgary's roster is truly bottom ten bad so the pick Montreal receive is most likely the Panthers.

And I suppose we want serious Cup hangover, injury adversity as possible, etc. for the Panthers since I am convinced that Calgary's roster is truly bottom ten bad so the pick Montreal receive is most likely the Panthers. Not necessarily. . There were a couple of things I thought could happen to the Panthers (admittedly low probability, but possible). Their depth really has been hurt. They won a lot of games last year because their 3rd and fourth lines scored timely goals. Mostly, though, they wore down players on the other teams. A few of those guys left (Lomberg, Cousins) and so did Montour who was on the first PP. They're not scoring much on the PP (or at 5v5 either) this year. Then there were potential injuries. If either Barkov (who has a history of missing a few games) or Bobrovsky got hurt, they didn't have anyone to replace those skill sets. And there's no one in the pipeline either. Finally, there's the SC hangover. It's a real thing. Winning the Cup is a 2 month battle and punishing. No one looks forward to doing that again, no matter what they say. Finally, and it's a smaller point, but Reinhart is not scoring at a 24% pace again. It's not a contract year, as it was for several of their players. That alone is a drop off. This is repetitive, yeah, but I won't stop hoping until after Christmas assuming Florida is in a good playoff position. Even if they do make the playoffs, we'll at least get a middling pick. Calgary's gotten off to a good start, though.

Yeah, I cannot believe Calgary's offense is on fire. Granted, the situation in net for Vancouver and Philadelphia is not the best.
Florida is probably going to have a drop off in terms of points and most likely will not have the depth to win the division. But it is hard to say if they get into the murky zone of the calendar where if things are just not clicking, then who knows where guys heads might be.

If they can just get to where they're doubting themselves. A down Bobrovsky year will help. Then Calgary has to regress to where they should be. It's not usual for a 62nd overall pick from 2014 to get called up from his usual home in the AHL and score his first NHL goal. It seems to be one of those stretches where the Flames could take a dump in the middle of 17th Avenue in Calgary and it would turn to gold. Gold that looks kind of yucky, but gold nonetheless. Yoohoo, goldsmith with burner....we need you.

Dennis Hildeby is a pretty good prospect. Only 23 years old, 6' 7", and reasonably well skilled as he proved against our kids at training camp and beating the Devils 4-2.

I'm watching the afternoon game between Ottawa and L.A. The goalies are pretty bad in this one, it's 5-5 after two periods. Even McEwen has two goals. It seems the secret to scoring on Kuemper is just putting the puck on goal. I don't know how the Kings are going to survive the season with this guy.
Now 7-6 Ottawa with 10 minutes left in the 3rd.
Ottawa wins 8-7 in OT.

Combine that with size and it's a good start. I've also seen him make some good glove saves, so IMO, he's better tjhan the average goalie prospect. The best compliment I could give him is that I wouldn't mind if he was ours.

Was very disappointed in the Bruins/Panthers game. Swayman with an .846 save percentage, while Bobrovsky wasn't great but better at .889. I wanted Florida to lose every game while Barkov was injured, but their saviour comes to the rescue. They just have 2 more games against Boston, I believe. Two too many. And why does Swayment play great against us and suck against Florida. The Panthers only had 26 shots. Sheesh.
Devils put a stop to Utah's antics, beating them 3-0. Jake Allen gets the shutout (!)

Florida is going to give enough 'A' game efforts to hold down the fort while their captain is injured. I doubt they are at the top of the division two weeks from now but they are going to have enough points that genuine worry will not be setting in.

Pens beat Sabres in OT, 6-5 Couple of milestones for the Pens. Crosby with his 1600th point...plus the OT winner. Malkin with his 500th goal.
