I hear that the Oilers have recalled 5 players from Bakersfield to replace McDavid.

The Oilers have a lot a vets which, when facing adversity, should be an advantage. But it cuts both ways because Edmonton is one of the slowest teams in the league. I think they will survive without McDavid for 2-3 weeks. However, if Skinner is having an off year and they cannot bolster the d-corps, a deep playoff run this spring seems unlikely.

Devils must be feeling a little sheepish today after losing 1-0 to SJ & Blackwood, their former goalie.

Sens take 40 shots and Ullmark gets the SO. Sens best the Leafs 3-0.
And the Jets extend their incredible start beating the Rangers 6-3 to go to 15-1.

Loafs are playing the caps, down by 1 goal 50 seconds left and the caps get a penalty and the Loafs tie it up... what a joke

Tortorella, I think, is setting a trend tonight. I've been watching hockey for several decades ( I wont say how many) & head coaches always look the same - they wear a suit & tie.
Tonight coach Tortorella is wearing a Flyers hoodie. I wonder if other coaches will follow suit.😀

It really bugs me when I turn on TSN for NHL highlights & they spend the first 12 minutes talking about a mid season nfl game.

He wore a hoodie like a fan wears? Was it underneath a blazer?
It does not bother me, but I like the norm of the guys behind the bench sticking with the business dress code or at keeping the modifications in what people would classify as the business-casual range.
Hasn't Torts go to look in recent years been the quarter-zip sweater underneath a navy blue blazer? I never minded that look at all since wearing a tie may look sharp but is not really near the top of the list of most guys' comfort options.

I thought at 1st it was a clip of a practice but no, it was the Sens game. He has been wearing that zip sweater for a couple of years & I liked that look but I dont know about the hoodie. It's a little too casual I think. Maybe Tortorella is tweaking the league & waiting for a reaction.😀

EDM had a 2-1 lead in the 3rd but Skinner allows 3 goals in the 3rd and OT & finished with an 818 save %.
I know they went to the Finals but do they really trust this guy?

After the Chicago loss in Vancouver, the panel was discussing Bedard's (Chicago's) struggles...and Friedman made an interesting observation. He didn't mention the Habs, but we're definitely included.
...and the one thing we're reminded (of) in this league....you look at Ottawa, you look at Detroit, you look at Buffalo, you look at what Anaheim's going through, you look at San Jose, you look at these guys now in Chicago....
If you go to the bottom in this league, it is hard to pull yourself out. I don't know if there's another sport where it's as hard to rebuild as it is right now in the NHL. I spent a lot of time thinking about it this week. In the NBA, you get the right player, you can change your fortunes immediately. The NFL, you get the right quarterback, you can change your fortunes pretty quickly. But in hockey right now--these teams like--still Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa....you wait for them to put 5 wins together...3 or 4 and they tantalize you...it is so hard in this league at rock bottom.
Just the nature of hockey. So many skill/IQ/age factors involved in a high-speed fight over a little rubber disc.

One thing Friedman neglects to mention is that the NBA & NFL draft supply older players in their 20s that are , for the most part, big league ready and can have an immediate impact.
NHL teams usually have to wait 2 or 3 seasons for that kind of impact.

And we haven't yet seen development/proof of a can't-miss generational talent for our troubles...certainly not the out-of-the-gate McDavid, Matthews, Bedard types. Perhaps Demidov is that gem.

For once, Parros (Mr. Princeton) or whoever wrote the paragraph summarizing what happened and why it resulted in the verdict got it right. The only guy in the league who would have somehow gotten away without a suspension is Trouba...

Just the nature of hockey. So many skill/IQ/age factors involved in a high-speed fight over a little rubber disc. It takes longer to become competitive, for the simple reason of roster size. In football, a quarterback can make a huge difference to a team. In Basketball, if you get a Bedard type, he's 20% of the players on the court and he's out there for 75% of the game, minimum, so the impact time is hugely different. An elite defenseman plays a 1/3 of the game and an elite centre slightly less. You need a couple or 3 of those guys to make an impact in hockey. The one exception might be goal where an elite goalie can improve any team. They're playing 70-80% of the games. If you have 3 of those impact guys in the NBA, you're a finals or semifinals team, consistently. Baseball is more like hockey. One guy can't make that much of a difference, especially pitchers who only throw 20% of the time.

Jim Montgomery is the latest example of “Show me a good goalie and I’ll show you a good coach “.
Fired by the Bruins because management is too embarrassed to lookin the mirror and admit there is a cost to going for it year after year.
To add more hilarity to the situation, Joe Sacco has been named interim coach. You may not remember Joe Sacco, but while he was in Colorado as HC, Sylvain Lefebvre was there as his assistant, learning everything he could about coaching. 😇.

Boston could be in tough if Swayman keeps playing like an average NHL goalie.
I have no idea if the players liked Montgomery, so it is hard to predict whether a bolt of energy is going to run through the room and onto the ice.
I have no idea what Gorton and Hughes think of Montgomery, but in the event that things go wildly bad this season it would reason that he would be on the secret short list of candidates. Obviously, Vincent would be under strong consideration. I wonder if Tanguay is also potentially on the list, albeit not near the top.

I know Ocechkin is injured right now but I see that at the age of 39 he leading the NHL with 15 goals.
He's now 27 goals away from passing Gretzky.
