Pete was a party animal. Dryden writes about it in The Game. I met Pete after the '71 Cup parade. He was hammered and played some catch with me and my buddy - we were all of 11 years old. Fergy was with him (they shared the same vehicle on the back of the convertible) in the parade and Fergy was very subdued, almost grumpy. In those days the parade was the day after the Cup win. They won in Chicago, started drinking within minutes of the Cup presentation, had a number of drinks on the flight home to a packed Dorval Airport at 1am. and drank with fans in the parking lot. Then parade at 1pm. Pete had the stamina for that sort of partying. A great experience and memory! I'll say that's amazing...

I was talking to Liam McGuire about Pete Mahovlich and why Montreal moved him out ... this was a few years ago but, according to Liam, Montreal had had enough of his off-ice partying ... I didn't ask for his source about it though, I remember him saying that he knew that from around the time they traded him, and David Lee, to Pittsburgh for Pierre Larouche and the rights to Peter Marsh ... Cheers. Pete was a party animal. Dryden writes about it in The Game. I met Pete after the '71 Cup parade. He was hammered and played some catch with me and my buddy - we were all of 11 years old. I can't remember which book I was reading, at the time ... still, from what I read, when on the road, Pete felt it an insult not to look up friends in whatever city they were playing in ... that might have been Ken Dryden's "The Home Game", but I'll have to check ... another good read is "For The Defence" by Larry Robinson ... Cheers.

The Game talks about Scotty waiting for Pete in the lobby of a Detroit hotel long after curfew. Pete had gone out partying with friends from when he played in Detroit. Pete arrives and Scotty fines him $500 for missing curfew. Pete writes out a cheque for $1000 and gives it to Scotty. Scotty looks at it and says "I said $500, why are you giving me $1000?". Pete says" I'll be missing curfew tomorrow night, so this way you don't have to wait up for me". Classic!!!

When we were waiting for the bus to go back to school, we see a convertible across the street in front of the Budget car rental shop and it has a sign on it "Pete Mahovolich" "John Ferguson". We figured we gotta go check this out. We go into the place and there are Pete and Fergy returning their car. Being 11 year old boys in the month of May and big Expos fans we never went anywhere without our baseball gloves and ball. Pete turns around and sees us, puts out his hand and says "Lay one on me! Anyone that's a friend of Mack Jones is a frined of mine!" My buddy threw him the ball and we played catch and chatted with Pete for a bit, until Fergy had had enough. And then we went off to school. Sure Mrs Langstaff could have improved my grammar skills that afternoon, but i probably would have forgetten it all by now. Will never forget meeting Pete!

Great, thanks! Perhaps it was a bittersweet moment for Fergie, considering he was soon to retire. You and your buddy witnessed him dropping off his 5th and final Cup parade car. Nice article on Fergie here. He had "retired" before that season, but Pollock talked him into coming back. On the victorious return flight to Montreal, Fergie told Beliveau he was joining him in retirement.

I remember reading somewhere that, the Habs even offered the captaincy to John Ferguson, but he ended up retiring instead ... he was already big into racehorses and I only know that because I ran across it while researching GDTs ... Fergy made it into the "Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame" ( link) Cheers.
