If Milroy has a terrific training camp, he's in and Audette is on the block. No matter what mistake a GM has made on a contract, if a player sucks, he's gone. I agree. Although, Milroy would have to show it for at least 20 games before anybody'd be thinking about moving a veteran RW (petrov excepted). The thing is, none of these guys is ready. Maybe, maybe Hossa, but you can't persuade me Milroy's so good a prospect at this point that his development wouldn't almost certainly be better served playing in the AHL this year. Same with Balej and just about everybody else among the good prospects. Garon's an exception.

good point.
The guys we have who are at "that age" where they either come up and claim a spot or get weeded out of the system are not top drawer prospects. Ribs, Choucroute, Ward, Descoteaux, Gratton (24?) et all are just not job-stealers. The guys who may be are all 19 or 20. They'll wait. And while they're waiting, they'll keep developing.

Bingo. And that's why AS got all those veterans. He knows the kids he drafted in 2001 and 3 weeks ago won't be ready this year and some of them *may* be ready next year.

Well, they better work out, and about 10 of them should be NHL-ready over a 2 year span, otherwise we'll have to do a lot of wheeling and dealing, again... and if we're getting more UFAs, it'll be blocking the kids for real, since UFAs need 2-4 year contracts, unless they suck - which means they wouldn't be much use anyhow.

No seriously, is there a way to get yourself unsubscribed from getting updates on a thread? I'm gonna go totally postal if I get just one more "Dyment traded to Wild" email. I might not stop at just co-workers, either. It could get ugly. Could we not, just for mercy's sake, destroy this thread forever? I mean, c'mon, 13 pages for a guy who has never played a game in the NHL? Please, for the love of God, DIE THREAD, DIE!!

We should gather all these posts and send them to his mother in scrapbook form.

Ten? Did you say "ten"? You been smoking your Wheaties again? The chances of our system producing "about ten" guys who are NHL ready over a two year span are about 750 to 1...... Hainsey'll get worked in this year; then in 2003/2004, we'll be lucky if two more guys can claim spots (Hossa, who'll be up and down this year, and maybe Komisarek, but he's more likely to spend this year in college and next year in the AHL, or Balej); and in 2004/2005 we'll see two or at most three of Perezhogin, Milroy, Balej, Higgins and Plekanec. So, over either of the two year periods in the next three years, probably no more than three or four guys will be "NHL ready" in any meaningful sense of the term. Five would be extraordinary good production from the farm. Of course it's possible that you think Ribeiro, Ward, Chouinard and Descoteaux are "NHL ready" right now, in which case there's no point in discussing things further....

OK, now you know why I'm annoyed. I agree with your timetable for the rate at which kids can be worked in. The problem is that we are going to need more than that. Petrov, Chow, Audette, Perreault, Juneau, Dackell, Odjck, Dykhuis, Quintal, Brisebois, Hackett, Mackay, Lindsay... they're all going to need to be replaced over 2 seasons at this point. I'd rather we be breaking in some kids *now*, even role players like Asham, Ward and Gratton, just to lessen the number of kids we have to bring in over a short time span when all the initial wave of AS acquisitions are on their way out. 10 kids might be asking too much, but we're going to need a lot of kids to be making it, all at once - even if we stretch out a couple of our veterans' careers, we'll be needing to break in too many kids at once IMO.

The rate at which kids can be worked in is not fixed. The Hab's of the 60's could work in one, perhaps two. The 2002 Red Wings cup winning team can add 2, maybe three. The current Hab's are not stocked with a bunch of 28 year old superstars. They don't have a single 30 goal scorer and only 3 20 goal scorers. You don't have to be Gretzky to make the team. Beating out Odjick or Lindsay for a spot is not like beating out Duff or Rousseau. The Panthers could add 15 rookies this year and not slump.

Petrov, Chow, Audette, Perreault, Juneau, Dackell, Odjck, Dykhuis, Quintal, Brisebois, Hackett, Mackay, Lindsay... they're all going to need to be replaced over 2 seasons at this point. ********** 10 kids might be asking too much, but we're going to need a lot of kids to be making it, all at once - even if we stretch out a couple of our veterans' careers, we'll be needing to break in too many kids at once IMO. Hackett is already replaced, as we have a #1 goaltender. Lindsay is a complete spare part, picked up on waivers. That can be done easily. Most people don't even want to see Odjick "replaced" at all, and in any event there are plenty of journeymen ruffians out there who can do the job. Dackell has enough left in him to last three more years, easily, and if Milroy pans out he can step into his spot, either next year, or the year after, or the year after that. Dykhuis is a guy you think little of anyway, so what's the problem. He'll be sixth or seventh on the depth chart two years from now, so there's no problem there. Whether it's Hainsey, Markov, Jarventie who "replaces" him is immaterial. And it could be anytime in the next three years, not the next two. Quintal? Komisarek Of the Audette, Czerk, Petrov, Perreault quartet, I'd say the transition period is likelier to be three or even four years before they're all gone. One will be traded, one will go as a UFA, one will be extended for a year or two, etc (I'm guessing). The point is, Savard will want one or even two of them to stay. Just because guys contracts are set to expire in 2004 doesn't mean they'll go. And for some of them, if they go it'll be because Savard doesn't mind them leaving. In short, it's just not all going to happen in a span of 24 months, and you should know that. Guys get added via free agency (like Mckay, Juneau, Dackell, Perreault, etc), other guys step up (like Markov, Souray, Rivet, perhaps Bulis and Hossa this year) and there are always trades. Don't worry so much. The situation is actually well in hand. It may be that there will be ten new guys on the roster by the time October 2004 rolls around, but only four or at most five of them will come from within the organization: Hainsey, Hossa, Komisarek, Balej, Milroy and maybe one more. And by October 2004 some of them will have a fair bit of experience: Hainsey will be starting his fourth year of pro hockey and his third in the NHL; Hossa will be starting his second or third year; Komisarek and Balej will be in their second years, and so on. Take a 'lude, dude....

You have a good point, JV, that we won't be adding more kids than we have. I just dislike seeing this team so old, and with such a need for short-term changes just to stay decent. While the UFA route was the only way to go, I also think that we should still be breaking in new kids, even for marginal roles. Odjick and Dykhuis might not be important, but IMO you should always be breaking in one or two kids, and Savard has locked up the roster to the point that kids have no hope of making it. But you're pretty much right that I shouldn't stress about it, things will be taken care of. I might not always like AS's philosophy, but he is competent and shouldn't make any really dumb moves.

OMG, you guys should just relax a little. You are already forecasting who our kids will be replacing on our current roster 2-3-4 years from now.
Relax PTH. Once AS's kids are ready, he'll make room for them. The veterans you talked about will be traded for whatever we can get or just released or let go via FA.

by the way, I do agree a kid or two should be added to our team every year. But not if they are not ready. They have to earn it in training camp.
This year, I would love to see Hainsey and Hossa make the team

Amazing how a thread announcing a trade of a fringe prospect could turn into this Dyment is not a fringe prospect. I feel very strongly about this. He will need to show a lot of improvement this year to become a fringe player. He's not there yet and that is why he was traded. I don't know iof he really has the potential to develop that much. Fringe is reserved for the truly dedicated individuals who can skate without runners, work hard and have a clue. Dyment might be a fringe broomball prospect at this point.

I think one of the reasons for the longevity of the Dyment thread is the overall lack of big news. AS has gone about quietly signing his players, a few marginal players added to an already ordinary lineup. A couple of prospects getting ready to vie for ice time against ordinary veterans. A couple of guys sent back to Europe and a few of Houle's prospects released. Now AS is trying to convince Theodore to sigh for Rocket Richard money, ie. $50,000 per year. How times have changed.

Quotes for HA from Palestinian Post (liberally translated).
bin Laden; "I think Dyment will be a bomb!" Arafat; "The Hab's traded away their future when they let Dyment slip through their capitalistic fingers!" Qureshci; "Dyment is the best hope for the future of the planet!"
kinda puts minor events like suicide bombings and death into pespective compared to millionaire baseball players seeking trillions, owners offering billions.

Arafat; "The Hab's traded away their future when they let Dyment slip through their capitalistic fingers!" Arafat making capitalist jokes ? He could make jokes about American Imperialism, but as far as I know he's just as much a capitalist as anyone else in that part of the world. Capitalist jokes are made by commies, and communism and religions fanatacism just don't mix well. Maybe because communists think beleiving in a higher being should be punishable by death ?
