Kings’ trade for Garon looking like a winnerBy KEVIN PROVENCHER Union Leader Sports MANCHESTER — He is as close as one gets to a guarantee in ice hockey. So far there is nearly a 50-50 chance that Monarchs goaltender Mathieu “Le Guarantee” Garon will post a shutout. With three shutouts in seven games — one short of his career record for a season — the trade to the Montreal Canadiens of $3.1 million center Radek Bonk and $600,000 back-up goalie Cristobal Huet for the $1.1 million Garon is looking like a stroke of genius by the Los Angeles Kings. Kings goaltending consultant Andy Nowicki termed Garon’s acquisition “carefully thought out.” “We had been watching Mathieu for some time,” said Nowicki. “He has been everything we thought he’d be. Very impressed.”<br> - www.theunionleader.com/articles_showfast.html?article=47068

7-1-0, 3 SO, 1.50 GAA, .949 sv% so far for Manchester.
Cristobal Huet für Adler Mannheim: 17 starts, 0 SO, 2.77 GAA, .916 sv%.
Damn that Bonk better rejuvenate himself in a Habs jersey!

Sure he looks like a man among boys... he almost 27 years old!
Jason Ward was MVP of the AHL, one of the leading scorers for the Bulldogs in the regular season and playoffs. Was voted / appointed Captain of a strong team, and had a great year.
Did this translate into good numbers in the NHL? No.
Give Garon 60+ games in the NHL before you start touting this trade as a steal by LA. Untill then, the Habs took an unused asset and turned it into a proven backup at the NHL level and a bonafied and proven goal scorer who can center almost any line in the NHL.
At this point... advantage Habs.

At this point in time Mathieu Garon has done more for the Habs than Radek Bonk. Advantage LA.

To be fair, Bonk has done as much for the Habs as Garon has done for the LA Kings. Nothing yet.

No offense 17, but he and I are strictly ballroom, we glide across the screen like some exquisite virus. Ahem, Garon has led LA's farm team to the front of the pack. Bonk toils away with no result accruing to the Canadiens organization.

Just because LA's farm team is tops, doesn't translate into the King's vie for the President's Trophy. At the present talant level in the NHL, a Big 2 way forward that can get you 25+ goals and keep his +/- in the double digits is rarer than a "FUTURE" No. 1 goaltender that has seen limited NHL Action. I'll stick by my guns. Advantage Habs.

Records so far this season:
Habs: 0-0-0-0, 0 Kings: 0-0-0-0, 0
No comparisons, no advantages.
While Garon may be doing well in the AHL, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Mr. B, Are you talking about the G4TechTV.com season? If so, you might be correct: Mathieu Garon 6 W 2.46 GGA 0.909 SP 1 SO Radek Bonk 2 G 5 A 7 P 12 PIM -5 +/- But in this league, Heut numbers are beating the pants off of Jose. So I thinks these numbers are off the wall. How else could you explain the Thrashers leading the eastern conference! www.g4techtv.com/hockey/stuff/hockey_standings.aspx

Here I was, thinking that I'd build myself a little shrine to St-Mathieu in this out-of-the-way forum and praise him as other true believers have done and their growing numbers do.
But, *sigh*, it seems the magnetic power of his growing fame has begun to attract those cynical toward or unsure of the beautiful destiny of he who was created in the image of the Great Goalie.
If such skepticism, as I fear it is, is the burden I must bear, so be it. I shall continue to bear faithful witness to the birth of greatness.
Garon is good! Garon is great! Garon has game!

The Book of Garon© Ice Sickle Productions The book has been moved from the Habs section of the library to the Kings section . . . why keep picking it up? Is it that there is no active Habs reading material available this year? I thought that you had gone to the next shelf down in the Habs library and were focusing on the Dogs!

The book has been moved from the Habs section of the library to the Kings section . . . why keep picking it up? Because for me it remains an instructive and interesting read and shall continue to be such. There may soon be enough material for a book with Ribs and a good spine. I have gone to the Dogs, that much is evident.

To be sure 'tis a long way to tickle Mary, but the Kings are no sad-sack team. Garon just makes them better. However, Bonk has had only one 25 goal (personal best) season in 9+ NHL seasons. I hope he's able to match that a few times in a Habs jersey, because Garon's gonna be a show-stopper on the left coast. Water pistol, right?

I find that a tin foil hat improves the reception. Do I look surprised? Has Théodore's relatives trial yet taken place in this parallel universe? The numbers ain't all that's off the wall mon chum. How do I explain the Thrashers' virtual success? In a word: Goaltending. Pasi Nurminen 3 wins, 1.96 GAA, .949 sv%, 0 SO. Kari Lehtonen 8 wins, 1.54 GAA, .950 sv%, 3 SO. The kind of netminding that Garon could have really given the Habs. For cheap. Oh well.

I like Garon and I hope he turns into a better goalie than Theodore, but the Habs had already laid their 6 million chips on Jose. Regardless, until he does it over a long stint, in the show, he will still be 'just' potential.

Garon: 9 wins, 4 SO, 1.28 GAA, .957 sv%. St-Mathieu leads the AHL in *all* the above categories. * In last night's game: “You can’t deny it; it’s entertaining,” Monarchs coach Bruce Boudreau said about the one-on-one matchups that occur if no one scores in the five-minute, sudden-death overtime. “There wasn’t a person in the stands who wasn’t standing up.”<br> “I think it’s good for the game,” said Monarchs goaltender Mathieu Garon, who spent all last year in the NHL as Montreal’s backup. “Sometimes for the players, it’s a little stressful, but I think everyone likes it.”<br> Garon, who only played the third period [stopping all 13 shots], collected four saves in the shootout, the last an incredible glove stop on Lowell’s Ryan Bayda while sitting on the ice. Manchester got goals in the shootout by Dustin Brown (on their second shot) and Tom Kostopoulos (fourth), the latter clinching he win and boosting the Monarchs’ record to 13-1-0-0. Lowell fell to 6-4-1-1.- tinyurl.com/3vnjq

I'm sure if Theo was playing for Hamilton this year, the Dogs would also be in first place, and Jose would have simular numbers, if not better than Garon. (Adding fuel to the fire? )

Yes he has had only one 25 goal season but to be fair Bonk has had 4 twenty goal plus seasons in his nine years plus several in the high teens. Of course, omitting facts like that make this deal look one sided. And we have no idea how Garon will play in L.A.

Garon is proud of his performances Tuesday January 25 2005 - (RDS) - Last year for the first time in his career Mathieu Garon spent the entire season in the NHL. But when one plays behind José Theodore it's difficult to dream of the number one goalie position. This is why the transaction which sent him to Los Angeles pleased him. Except that, because of the lockout, he is far from his dream and the California sun. Despite everything he doesn't regret his decision even if this return to the minors means seemingly interminable bus trips. "After all was said and done, it was the best decision I could make. I hadn't played much either last year or the year before. If I had spent another year like that, it would probably have been more difficult for me to become a number one goalie next year", underlined Garon. In his sixth professional season, Garon didn't have anything to prove in the American Hockey League because he'd already learned his lessons in this circuit with Fredericton, Quebec and Hamilton. But even if he had produced very good seasons in the minors, Garon is really dominating this season. He is among the leaders in all the goalie statistics: shutouts, games, GAA and save percentage. "I am proud of my performances. I would like to win every game but that's impossible. I want to stay good and become better", explained the goalie. Garon is enjoying Manchester. Suspecting that the work stoppage was going to last for a while, his wife Marie-Julie and their new-born baby Charles-Édouard followed him to this small New Hampshire town. Evidently the former Habs goalie quickly became popular and the fans dubbed him with a nickname that says it all - "GARONTI"... for GUARANTEED victory. "From a hockey point of view it's close to the NHL. It's even better than in certain NHL cities. We have an average of 9,000 people who attend our games and when we go downtown people recognize us." At 27 years of age Mathieu Garon is finally ready to claim a number one goalie position in the NHL. It's precisely this role which the Kings intend to entrust to him next July 1st. His team-mate Roman Cechmanek will become a free agent and Los Angeles does not intend to renew his contract. - www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/171221.html

Well I guess one person is smiling about the lockout. The Kings likely would have rotated goalies this season, but now he gets first dibs on that starting spot once Roman's contract expires.
I wish him well, as he was always a great and respected member of the Habs organization either in the AHL with stellar numbers or when he was called upon to back up Jose. In hindsight this is really a win-win-win trade for both organizations and for the players involved.
