Can't wait to see MT telling Mario to do sprints after practice if he didn't work hard enough.

Merry Christmas Ed.
I know it's a business but do you think waiting a couple of weeks would make a difference to this team?

I think MT did okay with the horrible team that was put in front of him. It's not his fault we had the likes of Gilmour, Audette, Czerkawski, McKay, Traverse, Dykhuis, Odjick, etc...

Eh, I thought MThead was a bit of a hack. Best left in the minors.
Somehow I can't see the Igloo as the next "House of Pain".
I can't see any benefit to Crosby here. He should have an experienced veteran NHL coach to guide him. A Sutter, Quenneville, Crawford, Quinn type coach.
Maybe Mario will take to the bench after he hangs em up for good.

Today's Michel Therrien is a far cry from the Michel Therrien people remember from his coaching days with the Habs.

MICHEL THERRIEN Head Coach Michel Therrien begins his first season as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He replaced Eddie Olczyk behind the bench in Pittsburgh on Dec. 15, 2005. Therrien was promoted from Pittsburgh’s top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he guided the Baby Penguins for two and a half seasons after he became the team’s second-ever head coach on July 15, 2003. He left Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with a 94-81-10 career mark. Therrien was in the midst of the Baby Penguins’ most-successful season. He guided the Baby Penguins to a 21-1-2-1 start and 45 points in the team’s first 25 games in the American Hockey League. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton won its first nine games of the season and did not lose a game in regulation until its 24th game. The Baby Penguins also established an AHL road winning streak of 15 games, dating back to April 10 of last season. In his first season behind the bench, Therrien led the Penguins to their most successful regular season campaign in team history, then guided the club to the Calder Cup Finals while beating the top-three teams in the Eastern Conference in the playoffs. During the regular season, the Penguins set new team single-season records for points (86) in a season, fewest losses in a season (28), most overtime losses (eight), fewest goals scored in a season (197) and fewest goals allowed in a season (197). Therrien followed the 2003-04 season by setting a new team mark for points in a season (88) in 2004-05, and guided the Penguins to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.... - www.pittsburghpenguins.com/team/staff_bio.php?id=50

Michel Therrien was an obvious choice. That bright yellow jacket will fit in well in Pittsburg. The mustard that rubs off his hotdogs won't show. I like to see a guy get a chance. Olczyk wasn't doing it, but coaching a bunch of veterans and stars as well as the Owner, Team President and GM is more like walking a plank than a tightrope.

I am incredibly happy for Therrien.
Anyone who has coached or is close to a coach at a high level can tell you how (for a career coach, not an ex-nhl player) only the very good ones make it to the junior level. Only the exceptional ones make it to the AHL and from that only la crème de la crème get a shot at one the only 30 ultimate spots available. When you fall once and are good enough to get a second call, than by all means you're a really special dude.
Michel is a coach cut in the Burns, Quinn, Heartley, Crawford mold. He might not appeal to those who prefer the cerebral type (Martin, Lemaire, Quenneville) but he's far, far, far from the clueless clown he was made out to be in his Montreal stay.
Michel got pushed out by Joe Juneau and Donald Audette that ganged up against him with a few others and convinced a few media guys to bash Therrien on a continual basis in order to run him out. The infamous rat was, as always case for that specie, not alone, there were rats on the ship for what Demers called at the time, a room rotten beyond recuperation. Unfortunately for Michel, his GM, Andre Savard, also very green at his position did not clean the room for his coach and so Michel got fired despite being a Jack Adams nominee on his rookie season only a few months before... Savard's inability to purge his team would eventually get him the axe as well. Michel was the lamb, an unusual twist of faith for a guy that had been a lion all his life.
But now he’s back with a fully deserved second chance. I wish him all the best and I hope Mario will step aside and let the Coach take control. With a bit of support from Lemieux and Patrick, Michel will put the Pens on a winning track, I am 100% convinced. Therrien will have a Jack Adams and probably a few Stanley Cup rings before his career is over.

However, I think your predictions for Therien's future are overly optimistic.

Lemieux will probably be done after this seson, some of the free agent signings don't look so good now and the team may levae the city after 2007. he has his work cut out for him but it looks like he really benefited from his stay in the AHL.

I think Lemieux hinders his team more than he helps now and Pittsburgh will take the next when Mario finally retires. Coaching in Pittsburgh must be a nightmare when you have the captain play when and how he wants to. Mario will retire. Leclaire won't be resigned and Recchi will be moved around the trade deadline to a contender looking for some help. The team will be built around Crosby, Fleury, Malone and Gonchar. Therrien will benefit from a purged room, will be able to take the bull by the horns and get his team to work hard, compete, get a desire to win and an understanding of what it takes. The Pens are to receive a 90mil subsidy to build a new arena so things are looking better.

I heard Darren Dreger of Sportsnet say yesterday that Lemieux had lost out on his gaming license and that people in Pittsburgh, after new stadiums have been built for the Steelers & the Pirates, will not fund a building for the Penguins.

You missed one Doc – Malkin. 19 years old, leading the RSL in scoring, and probably about to absolutely dominate the WJC. Lemieux-Jagr and now Crosby-Malkin, lucky fans. I was watching the Sabres-Pens last night and they mentioned that Recchi called his ol’ buddy for some info; Koivu gave the thumbs up for the new coach.

Ok, then what is it, the ghosts of the forum which keep Hab coaches from rewarding good behaviours?

PJ Stock isn't at all impressed by Therrien: From www.hockeybuzz.comThe Stock Report 12/19/2005 @ 08:38 PM Alas, the Messiah has arrived in Pittsburgh, Mr. Michel Therrien. The man who`s going to save the Penguins from their current landslide is a man who is only the 3rd head coach in Montreal Canadians history not to have a winning record. Also, he masterminded one of the Habs worst trades of all time almost sending their team into a downward spiral which they have yet to recover from....Me for Gino Odjick. (Gino might be a better hockey player, bigger and stronger but I`m way better looking.) His first move to salvage the team was to anoint Sidney Crosby as assistant captain. Nothing against Sidney but he hasn`t even played half a year yet. By giving Sid the "A", off the hop you lose a couple of guys in your dressing room whom I`m sure have had their Sid the Kid stuff up to the neck already. If the team was winning, there would be no problem but when it`s losing, it becomes a back stab fest and Michel just through young Sidney to the front of the line. The problem with this move is that Mr Therrien doesn`t come with the cleanest of rap sheets in the "class department". I`ve had the opportunity to play against him in the QJMHL, AHL, NHL as well as being coached by him for a short stint. He now becomes one of the faces of the most televised teams in the league. I`m hoping that he has changed many of his ways from smoking on the team bus to giving the throat gestures to players during games. I can rant and rave all day on how this situation is only going to get worse but I have to clean up my house. We made Christmas cookies and my wife let my 20mth old daughter and my 3 year son eat some of the icing. Two mini tornadoes just slowed down for a few minutes, long enough for me to hog tie them to their beds. Good night kids and best of the season to all you readers. I tend to think he knows what he's talking about. The hockey world is a small one. You really think Saku would say **** even if he had a mouth full?
Therrien's tactics are one of intimidation and threats with a dash of spite. Works well on young kids trying to make their way to the show but doubt it's very effective on pros. He's the goon of coaches.

If he hadn't it's very doubtful he'd get a second chance to coach in the NHL.

If Therrien learned from his mistakes he could have learned a hell of a lot. I favor thinkers like Lemaire, over emotional coaches like Tremblay. Skate skate skate shoot shoot shoot dassall.

I disagree. I'll bet that his sentiments are shared by quite a few NHL players (and probably some in the Pens dressing room). Stock may be a retired goon, but he has friends in the NHL, and has sat in plenty of dressing rooms. I think he probably has a pretty good feel for the mentality of many NHL players, and team / coach dynamics.
