This is Habs related because the Bruins are in our division. This leaves a big hole in their lineup, but I assume they save cap room.

Not as much cap room as I thought:

Wow... The first thing that strikes me is what little return they get... 1 top 4 dmen, one 4th liner and a somewhat offensive winger that struggles to reach 20 goals and 40 points... In exchange of a franchise forward...

We'd need to pick up another defenseman somewhere though, and we probably don't have cap room.

If anything, he is a trading liability because of his salary.

Thornton prophesied from the Alps during the lockout that he would never again play for the Bruins. God had a bit of a backlog so Joe signed anyway ($6.66M for this season—one would expect to see him on the Devils at that figure).
But now that the Big Guy has cleared his inbox...
The Bruins dump the manchild and shave $1.66M off the payroll. That Jeremy Jacobs, a founding father of "cost-certainty", sure has a knack for pleasing the fans of his hockey team. It's a God given gift.

Unbelievable!!! I was ticked off about losing Hainsey yesterday but I sure am glad I'm not a Bruins fan!! There's no way they're a better team after this trade.

If anything, he is a trading liability because of his salary. Ryder, Rivet and Bonk got 119 points last year compared to 109 for the 3 SJ players, but you're right about their salaries - they're about $1 million more expensive in total, and a year older on average. Still, I don't think we'd have had to give up Koivu, if not for the fact that we're in Boston's division.

What a dumb trade by the Bruins.
You'd think that they could've atleast gotten Marleau in return. Marleau's not as good as Thornton, but then again, neither is Wayne Primeau or Marco Sturm.
I can't imagine the panic and anger going through the heads of Bruins' fans after this deal.

Thornton gets the number 1 center spot over Koivu hands down... I wouldn't even think twice. The Prince?! Pffffffft! Lecavalier would rather have a second line spot, in a non-hockey city where nobody recognizes him, playing for a coach that treats him like dirt instead of coming to the hockey Meca of the world and become an ICON. Spineless, ballsless. Gimme Thornton over Vinny for sure.

Thornton wanted this trade. Maybe not to another struglging team, but he wanted out. He was getting a lot of heat in Boston.
Sturm is a 20 goal scorer. Primeau is a grinder. Stuart is a decent d-man.
I would asked for Marleau instead of Primeau, but then the deal probably wouldn't have been done.
I like Stuart and I like Sturm, but...Bruins fans have got to be totally PISSED right now.

How are the Bruins a better team now? Lately, Thornton was not the Thorny we FEAR. He became a "points accumulator" rather then a force on his team. He was ammasing points while the Bruins were falling to oblivion. That is why Boston is better off. On the other hand, the thorny Thornton can dominate like almost no other player in the NHL. He reminds me of Lindros and his attitude.

Just a terrible Houle-esque panic button move. I feel sorry for B's fans - this one will hurt for a long time. Elite top line talents don't come around very often. You have to get a player of equal value back.

Wow, those remaining games against the B's don't look so bad at all. I always worried about a healthy Big Joe, but now we might see him once a year it would appear.
