I'd don't mind Higgins - I haven't followed the draft much this year, so I don't know about the other guys, but from what I've read Higgins looks like a decent enough prospect, and I'll trust Dorion to have made a good call.
I think perhaps after seeing Hainsey and Komisarek develop pretty well, he's taking the safe route and he keeps on trusting his US College scout.
What I do mind though is the Asham - Czerkawski trade. Asham is everything this team needs - some speed, some skill, and quite a bit of grit. I really liked the kid, and I would have liked to see him given a much bigger role this year. Instead, we get a soft scorer, and an old one to boot. Looks to me like Savard is trying to build the Ottawa Senators - a small skilled team that might normally make the playoffs, but will get slaughtered when they do make it.

Habs have to be making another deal. It makes no sense to pick up Czerkawski.

I can recall that same lack of enthusiasm expressed just two years ago for Messrs Hainsey and Hossa ;)Funny how its ok for Washington and Calgary to think of taking Higgens, but not the Habs??
Why does anyone listen to that hyper bantam rooster Pierre Maguire anyway? It is safe to say that Higgens has :NHL speed, NHL skill, NHL hockey brains and at least AHL physical play. His competitiveness is not a question, so in two years, he will add an inch and 25+ lbs and be ready.
Just like Hainsey and Hossa.
And I gotta love how excited his folks got going to the Habs ;D

Sean Bergenheim picked up by the Isles.
I am hoping the Habs pick up Patrik Thorensen in the 2nd round. This guy played for Moncton in the Quebec league(worst team in that league) and had a point per game in his rookie year.

If we were a big team and we picked this guy up, we would be thrilled. Because he does have the skill and speed it seems

I guess all of us Asham fans are going to have to start cheering for the Islanders. Quote from MT "We need some guys who can score the puck". Yeesh, even being lenient as far as a second language goes, that's pretty pathetic. The beat goes on, guys. How long before Hainsey and Hossa get traded? I predict Asham will score more goals next year than Czerkawski. Don't like that deal. LMAO, asham scoring more goals than czerkawski??!! Only if marius is hit by a truck or god forbid something worse. I'll take that bet any day of the week.

I can recall that same lack of enthusiasm expressed just two years ago for Messrs Hainsey and Hossa ;)Funny how its ok for Washington and Calgary to think of taking Higgens, but not the Habs?? Excellent point. I think we need to keep in mind that most of these guys won't make it anyhow, so if you restrict yourself even more by going for need, your odds of getting a good player are pretty low. If you get a top player, then you can deal with issues later - too many similar players, size, etc. If you don't have anyone to deal around, then you're screwed way, way worse. Going for skill instead of size might have gotten us Sturm, Marian Hossa and Simon Gagné - if we had those 3, we might have a very soft team lacking size and grit, but would we care ?

Bulis is very close to being a goner, his contract ends in one season, and unless he shows something more than he's shown to date, I expect him to go back to Europe. So don't expect him to fetch us any kind of a pick around where we are now in the draft. These are after all teams who have been waiting for their 1st pick for hours now, they won't dump their picks for marginal young guys...

I agree with your point PTH aobut picking the best talent available rather than drafting based on need. I think that we have to be careful about thinking tht you can "manage" everything in developing a team. There are too many variables to be able to do this precisely and the best general approach is to stock pile assets because as long as you have assets you can keep improving your team- something h&c pointed out somewhere else.

EXACTLY ! That's a tough thing to keep in mind sometimes, we like to think that GMs have long-range plans, that they have players in mind to replace others at specific times, etc, etc - truth is they improvise constantly, though they try to do so within a general framework.

Four more picks and we have another chance to get Hudler. This time with a second round pick. Hudler either will never make the NHL or he will be a star. I vote star.
