I'm really not impressed with what Bergevin is doing today ... Sure he is acquiring cap space, but he isn't doing much with it.
Gilbert is a meh defenceman. He would have been one of the last defensemen signed if we didn't swoop him up.
Malhotra creates a centre glut, yet again. Galchenyuk NEEDS to be at centre this year.
Sekac? Who? Is this our top 6 pie in the sky?? We need some top six scoring in a big way, not bottom 6 ....
Now Iginla is an Avalanche

Iggy wanted 3 years. I understand not wanting to go there. Ferraro makes a solid point that Iggy didn't look good with the Pens who were a go go go team. Boston is a low post possession team. He can finish, and doesn't have to worry about keeping up. Avs are a go go go team. Will he be able to keep up?

Cammy for his money and term? Moulson? Too much stupid money for people who can make a minor difference. About the only big impact was Thorny who was going to add major to our too many centers.

Big time character boost in Buffalo ... And a big time removal of character by Berg ... two core guys gone like that ... But Buffalo will need these guys in their rebuild. The Sabres also just got a little more motivated when playing us ... Over 8 million for characters guys is something Buffalo needed to do.....we couldn't afford that anymore unfortunately Oh for sure, JJ ... I realize that ... Necessary monies for? ... Will be interesting to see who steps up to the plate ... Cheers.

Most jaw dropping deal for me, so far, is Orpik to Caps for 5 years and $27.5 million. He's got a lot of hard miles on him. His legs aren't exactly lively. He's a Gill type at this point imo. He'll kill penalties, and steady things in their own end, but not for more than $5 million a year.

I rather sign a bottom six that can make a difference and push Moen/Prust for less then crazy money.

I wanted another top 6 guy and we didn't get them. Bergs done some things I like and some things I'm not crazy about, unless he knows something I don't. Like: Malhotra signing - Everything we haven't had in a 4th line checking centre. Size, strength, face-off ability. Better value than Brian Boyle. Weaver signing. Loved this guy and really wanted him back. He's a right handed, cheaper Gorges and less prone to turn the puck over. Don't like - The Gilbert signing. I thought we were clarifying the defense situation for the youngsters, and then we thrown a Gilbert into the mix, who isn't IMO, that much better than the 3 kids, and will take away playing time from them. If we had signed a true #4 dman, I wouldn't complain, but Gilbert is, as you say...meh. BC always says you can't have enough dmen, but they have to qualify as dmen . Ambivalent - Sekac. Don't know enough about him. His stats are not overwhelming by any stretnch, but in the KHL, who knows how they score points. He's young,, not overly big and is supposed to be skilled. Big question mark to me. I think I can safely say our bottom 6 is better than last year, but is our top 6?

TSN reporting that Iggy came down to Avs, Canucks and Bolts. I dare say they're the only ones who were offering 3 years.

Vrbata is probably the only FA left that could play top 6. Problem is he's not great and as the last top guy he's going to demand top buck. MB should be careful!

He'd provide Parenteau levels of offense. Not elite. His expiring deal was 3 years and $9 million. He's 33, which doesn't appear to be factoring in on deals today. I think it would depend on whether Berg is working on a deal for winger. Signing Vrbata would mean he likely sticks with what he has. I expect he'd want a deal very much like what Moulson got.

I'd rather trade one of our centers (Pleks) to the Oilers for a winger(Yakupov)while adding in picks prospects to even it out, than signing what's left over out there.

I'd rather trade one of our centers (Pleks) to the Oilers for a winger(Yakupov)while adding in picks prospects to even it out, than signing what's left over out there. And that may well happen. During press conference, Berg states that the move of Gorges was to allow for two young lhd to get in and show their worth. Gilbert provides left to right balance. I think it's fair to think that he sees the log jam at center. None of Pleks, Eller, DD or Galch are going to the 4th line so Malhotra doesn't impact them. It's also worth noting that Berg felt that PAP can fit anywhere in the top 9. Tells me that he's contemplating moves with Bourque.

Berg says that Sekac will compete for 3rd line RW. Bourque's days are definitely numbered.

Not yakapov or other potential good forward. Already have Agal. We need a sure thing if we're giving up Pleks and a pick!

Berg says that Sekac will compete for 3rd line RW. Bourque's days are definitely numbered. He's a real mystery man lol.... Only scoting report I found on him from Bill Meltzer: "At the World Championships, Sekac scored goals against Slovakia and Italy to post two points in 10 games. He came close to scoring at least two other goals; hitting the post in games against Norway and Canada. The latter came on an otherwise perfect play where he deked James Reimer on the backhand and had the goalie beaten cleanly but ticked the elevated shot off the inside of the post. ..... One of main knocks on Sekac is that he is an unorthodox-looking skater. Although he is not a physical player and could stand to be a little harder on the puck, he has shown a greatly improved "compete level" from the time when he a bust in Peterborough. Sekac is a stronger and more confident player than he was then. He has also developed his two-way game. Sekac is still young enough to be in an upward development cycle. He does not project as a top-six forward in the NHL but could find a role if he continues to develop and is willing to spend time in the AHL and work his way up from there." Though there's a chance Sekac could develop into a top-6 forward, but reality is he'll likely be a third liner in all likelihood. That said, he's Czech, he battles, and plays a two-way game.....

If I remember Gilbert from the Oilers years, doesn't he have a canon from the Point? Could we see a 2nd unit of Gilbert-Beaulieu after Markov Subban?

I think Washington signed two biggest question marks for giant contracts..... Niskanen and orpik..... wow looking at the risk they are taking WOW I just pointed out in the UFA tracker thread that the Caps now have almost $29 million committed to defenders next season. Green, with a year left, has to be a trade target.
