Friedman was talking about recent a recent meeting of the NHLPA on "After 40" tonight. Apparently the league has told the union that if they don't agree to up the cap by 5%, it could actually drop from $74 million to $69 million.
I get that an increase in the cap is, initially, covered by player escrow. But, I fail to see how not agreeing to putting more in results in the cap dropping almost 7%. The union doesn't have a lot of time to decide. If the cap somehow drops to $69, it's going to hurt A LOT of teams and it will kill the UFA market for many teams AND players.

There are two things at play, and while they are somewhat linked, they are also somewhat separate. 1) They salary cap is set each year based on the previous year's revenue. So NHL is basically saying the revenue from 2015-16, was lower, and the cap will be set at 69 million. However, there is a clause that allows the players to increase that cap by 5%. The way I read the wording, that means roughly 3.5 million (5% on the 69), or 72.5 million will be the cap. 2) Player escrow. Player escrow protects the owners from overspending (theoretically). What should be also highlighted, is that the players are entitled to 50% of hockey related revenue. At the end of each year, when the accountants determine what the revenue was, if the players portion was over 50%, then they have to pay that portion back through the escrow. Conversely, if it is less, then the players first cheque next year is larger. The salary cap is not really tied to this, but the player's salaries are. Every year since the salary cap inception, players have lost between 12% and 16% of their pay. And what is driving this? In all likelihood, it's front end loaded contracts. I read an article once that explained this very well (and I'm probably not doing it justice here) where they used an example. The team was considered a cap team, but they had 1 or 2 players with front end loaded contracts. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, so for this explanation I will make numbers up. The two front ended players were only 7 million on the cap, but their salaries that year were 12 million. All the other player's salaries were basically their cap numbers. So while this team was hit with a 72 million cap that year, they actually spent 82 million in salaries. If you multiply that throughout the league, you can see that players would be responsible for paying back around 300 million. And the star players would love to have the escalator clause invoked. That's who gets the money for the most part. But it's a hard sell to the lower paid guys, or the retiring guys, to tell them to sacrifice 15% of their salary. Those are the NHLPA brethren who want the escrow payments brought back into line.

Thanks Skilly. Good explanation. Wouldn't the escrow be applied to what players were getting actually paid? If so, front end loaded contracts would be hit more in actual dollars. I'm getting confused. This is why I concentrate on the game itself rather than the business side of it.

Still no indication that Bergevin is shopping Subban, though the vultures are apparently trying to circle. From Pierre Lebrun: As far as I can tell, I don’t believe the Montreal Canadiens are phoning teams about him. However, I know of at least one team that has contacted the Habs about Subban, and it didn’t go anywhere.
Which is to say: I would put the odds of Subban getting traded before July 1 at about 5 percent. But I’m not ready to say it’s 100 percent it won’t happen because you just never know what kind of offer might come from general manager Marc Bergevin.
"I don’t think they’re moving Subban, but I also think Bergevin has to listen because why not?" said one Western Conference NHL team executive. "But it would take a huge offer. I don’t see it happening."
Added another rival team executive: "The prudent thing for Bergy to do is to listen. You have to with the no-move coming. But I don’t think he moves him."espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/42569/rumblings-p-k-subbans-next-move-steven-stamkos-status-milan-lucic-relocation-odds

Habs Eye on the Prize has a link to an article or video (I didn't bother checking it out) suggesting Radulov would be a good pickup for the Habs. I think so too. It would make Therrien appreciate PK.

The guy is about as toxic as they come. Didn't people learn anything from Radulov's Nashville fiasco? Besides, it would be another case of shopping in the thrift store; trying to make something fit when it didn't work for someone else.

I wasn't being serious. I only meant that if Therrien could experience Radulov, PK's character would be heavenly. Radulov is indeed a me first kind of guy. Bergevin won't even have him last on a list of options. He's a team killer.

That Russian snake wants 2 years and $7.5 million per. No thanks. I'll take a dependable two way scorer in Eriksson, and a hard working playoff battler than has a knack for big goals in Brouwer. Radulov has no class, no honour, and won't show up for the playoffs.

Once MT decides that he can't work with him, which is bound to happen, in November probably, we are left with a hole again. And we all know that BargainBergie can't fill that hole during the season. Cause it's hard to make trades. Pass. Get a real hockey player. One of the usual suspects at the top of everyone's wish list would be the preferred option.

Would only add that I don't know if you'd be wrong to also state "we all know that he can't fill the hole in the off-season"; unless there is some acquisition of a top 6 forward during MB's tenure which i'm overlooking. Don't think so!

Friedman is reporting that Hartnell is willing to waive his NMC. He's got 3 years left at $4.75 million. He's still good for more than 20 goals a season and something in the area of 50 points.

Any player with scoring talent is a fool to play for Therrien. There is no quicker way to shelve your career than MT grinding you into the ice and then casting you off because he feels you are too risky and not responsible enough to fit his outmoded dump and chase expansion team system.
Plan looking for early retirement and perhaps branch into something, like say, crop dusting. Or, if you can speak french, then perhaps a spot on l'antichambre replacing MT, at least until he returns.
The message remains ... avoid MT like the plague because there are 29 other teams with a better coach for you.

No.....I wasn't referring to Hartnell grinding/some scoring types, but more pure, highly skilled sniper players who's main game is offense. I was too general by saying "any" I now realize. IMO ... Therrien would be an anathema to the elite scorers of the league and I'm pretty sure those players all know it. However, I'm not so sure Euro elite players know Therrien's background, unless their agent can fill them in and steer them away from MT/MB and go to ... well ... Pittsburg!

I love it when a plan comes together
