Funny you should ask! ;D I've been keeping track of the better ones out there, using this site: www.geocities.com/floridapanthers2000/free2006.htmlFor your ease of use, I have broken them down into three categories, and ranked them in order of my own personal preferance. Defense seems okay, but I would bet on at least 3 of the first 6 signing with their current teams before ever hitting the market. Otherwise, it's not all that impressive. nice work Ryan, just some small notes. Higgins is a RFA, not signed he signed right when Perezhogin did.
Your missing Garth Murray, who will be an RFA
Archer should be an RFA since it's his 3rd year of his 3 year contract
Ivanans I believe is an RFA, same with Dags.

Higgins - You are correct sir, I copied incorrectly. Murray - Garth! Forgive me please Garth! Ivanans and Dagenais...I know by definition they should both be RFAs, however they were both signed as UFAs after being set free by their former teams. Can you become an RFA after already being declared a UFA? Maybe someone smarter than me can answer that one, but for now I'm going to leave them as UFAs.

...Arnott. Big physical center. Right shot. Great 2 way guy. Well known by both Bob and Guy. Seems like a slam dunk. I've given a lot of thought to Arnott. It's a logical avenue, but is he really what we need? Jason can score, is a useful player on a PP, and has a really hard shot. All pluses. However, I don't consider him much of a play maker. I'd really like to see the team get someone that can provide some really strong playmaking skills for the wingers we do have. Jason's bull in a china shop technique is more suited to a third line IMO. If we could get out from under Bonk's contract, I'd strongly consider Jason for that role. If we can't, I'd prefer working other avenues. I'd consider Weight on a short term deal. I know kozlov is as enigmatic as they get, but he's big, a right handed shot, and does have great skill. Could he and Kovalev work well together? Just a shot in the dark. I don't consider myself a Kozlov fan. I don't know if we have a legit shot at any of the defencemen on that list. Someone BG should target is Karlis Skrastins. This guy is extremely underrated. Good size, great in his own end, and leads the league in blocked shots. He's under a lot of people's radar and could be the best bang for the buck on the list. Jovo, Blake, McCabe, Redden, and Chara are all going to command too much $$ imo. Great work work putting this together Ryan.

The 2006-2007 salary cap is not $39,000,000 ... it is "to be determined". Most people have estimated that it will be somewhere around the $45,000,000 area.

I agree that we need a centre who can upgrade the 2nd line. Mike Ribeiro is really just a caretaker for that role - would Marc Savard be an upgrade? He's heading for a 100 point season but that may be a function of playing with Kovalchuk. Again you could end up overpaying for a historically average player with one great season.
No real exciting possibilities.

You're right BH. There aren't really any special people at centre that will be available this Summer. I think Savard is a good player. Is he a 100pt player? No. Is he a point a game guy? IMO yes. I think he can be that on most any team.

the important thing is what is GG's salary cap? R. That is the question, isn’t it? He’s already on record saying he doesn’t want his team to spend to the new cap limit, if and when it goes up, so what does that mean? The team has an “unofficial” cap of, what? $36 million? $39 million? $33 million? If all we do this summer is use that extra $3 million to resign the current players we have, are we going to be happy? If our payroll to start next season is once again $36 million, does that change our outlook on Gainey and/or the Theodore deal? This is a 7th-8th place team, hardly one that can afford to stand still. Or, as HA’s signature asks, are we just going to circle the abyss of mediocrity? Show me, as Jerry Macguire infamously said, the money. Arnott strikes me as the kind of player that is too expensive for what he delivers on the ice. He would be more expensive than Bonk, and although I would rather have Arnott than Bonk, I don't think we need both of them. I think Arnott will re-sign in Dallas. No reason for them to let him go. Plus, he’s having a career year (coincidentally enough the year he becomes a UFA), which will drive his value through the roof, if he does hit the market. And, just to make matters even worse, there is no personal income tax in Texas, whereas Quebec has one of the highest tax rate in North America. We’d have to offer somewhere around 20% more, just to equal whatever Dallas offers. I’d like him, I think he would be a great fit here, but I’m not optimistic. I also think Savard re-signs in Atlanta. They are on the cusp of something special there as well, and they have lots of money to throw at Savard, if it comes to that. Another case of "why would he leave?"

Strange, I thought there was some kind of deadline to sign players... Maybe it's later ? Considering how players now go off the UFA list before they become free agents, the arguments of "...we won't spend this year because next year UFA crop looks interesting..." doesn't hold anymore. P.S. you've really mastered the ancient art of Tables haven't you...

Pat Hickey says that Bulis is not a UFA but an RFA based on him playing 48 games instead of 50 so that costs him a season. I don't really trust Hickey for being correct on things, so I guess we'll see.
Also from what I read the cap is looking to be around 43M next year but it might go down to 42M cause the players want the escrow to go down.
Looks like Sundstrom will be gone, he's stated he likely will play for Modo next year in the Swedish papers. Should be interesting to see who's back and who's gone next year.

Hey Bob you got some mistakes in there. Markov is under contract for next year, either 1.75 or 1.9 I forget which one it is. Plekanec is under contract for next year at 450K again.
Plus Downey is at 450K, so no need to go over his 10%, which would be 495K.
It will be interesting to see what Gainey does with Huet. 1.7M is a huge increase off his 465K he makes now but we'll see what happens.
Personally I hope Gainey doesn't give Higgins 1.2M, he only has to offer him 5% since he makes over 660K per the new CBA, so it would be 945K same thing for Komisarek, who at 901K would be up for a raise of 46K or 947K. Gainey holds all the cards with them, so he doesn't have to go overboard although we are talking about less then 400K, I think Gainey will need to be very smart with each contract since the Koivu one hurts.
Ryder I hope to see him get a little less then 1.6 but we'll see what happens.

I will admit to the mistakes on Plekanec and Downey but I think Gainey might have to open the wallet a bit for Huet, especially after watching Aebischer last night. And with that in mind, I might be tempted to keep Danis as my backup and see what I could get for Aebischer... unless his play improves dramatically. The reason I had Markov so high was because I would like to see the Habs ink him to something longer term before this contract expires. I was erring on the side of caution when it came to salary cap hit. You are absolutely right about Higgins and Komisarek. Every little bit helps in a cap world and I think Gainey will be very prudent when dishing out salaries. The more that I think about it the more I think that guys like Bulis and Sundstrom might have seen their last days in Montreal. They might be too expensive for the roles that they play.

Those numbers you've got for future years, did you just keep track of that on your own or is there a site you're using as a reference to get them? If it's the latter, I'd love to know what it is (particularly if it has other teams' numbers available). Thanks.

That is if Latendresse is not ready...
