Some people use them to rise higher than they are expected. True, there can be shrinkage. However, one can say the same about cosmetic enhancements and alterations.

I wish some people on the team use another kind of enhancements to rise higher than they are expected. Absolutely agreed. This roster can use all the enhancement it can get. Whew! That was close.

Saaaaaay....How are those European prospects doing? I'm pretty sure they are playing hockey. The Karyala (sp?) Cup starts next week. There will be four teams (Russia, Finland, Sweden and the Chezh Republic). The Team Russia roster will be known tomorrow. I think Tarasov will be the second goalie.

Buturlin and Korneev will play for the Team Russia at the coming Karyala Cup.

the first games of the Karjala cup have been played. Finland defeated Russia 3-2. Tarasov didn't play but Korneev and Buturlin did (no pts for them).
Sweden lost against the Czechs 1-2 after penalty shoot-out. the lone goal for Sweden was scored by Niklas Anger, a 1995 5th round pick of the Habs.

here's an update on Kastytsin who currently plays with his national team in euro ice-hockey challenge six-nation tournament in Hungary. they'va won in the first game against Croatia 8-2, but Andrei hasn't appeared on the scoresheet. the second game they played against Ukraine and won 4-3. this time Andrei assisted on his team's 3rd goal and scored the 4th himself. here's the link: www.icehockeychallenge.net/iihfsheet.php?GameNr=431EDIT: Belorussian team won that tournament defeating the hosts (Hungary) 6:3. Andrei scored the 5th goal but I don't know if he had any assists in that game as I could only find the names of the scorers on a slovakian site. I'll update this when and if I find more info.R.

Tarasov made his only appearance for team Russia in the last game of the Karjala cup. he made 20 saves in a 3-2 loss after penalty shoot-out (2-2 after 60 min.) to the Czechs. Korneev was also playing for the russians.
btw, the Finninsh team won the Karjala cup with a perfect 3-0 record. the Czechs were 2nd, Russia 3rd and Sweden was the last placed team.

here's an update on Jaroslav Halak who played with the Slovakian U20 team in a four nations tournament in Norway and won it. here's the link: www.hockey.no/t2.asp?p=4768&x=1&a=77606Slovakia - Norway 3:2, 2OT Halak -> 28 saves, 93.34% Slovakia - Germany 4:3, OT the link to the scoresheet doesn't work so I can't provide more details Slovakia - Switzerland 1-0 Halak -> 28 saves, SO well, the stats certainly don't tell everything, but it looks like Andre may have found a real gem in this young goalie. all games appear to have been very close and Halak gave his team a chance to win, which they did. I'm anxious to see how he'll do at the U20 WC which will be played in December, I believe. does anyone know if Korpikari played for his country in a similar tournament played in Finland? R.

Rimmer, are the teams in this tournament composed of mostly veterans? or are there younger players Kats' age?
It really sucks that he's on Belarus..we can't judge what he could do against better hockey nations in tournys like these and the WJC.

Rimmer, are the teams in this tournament composed of mostly veterans? or are there younger players Kats' age? I think they mostly ice the best possible team consiting of players from european leagues. Finland iced a team with veterans such as Nummelin, Peltonen, Karalahti, Kiprusoff, Eloranta... the russians and czecs, OTOH, iced a relatively young squad. maybe they're in process of youth movement, I really cannot tell. but mostly, these tournaments are a chance to filter a group of players who will make a core for the WC along with some NHL players. here is the link where you can look at the rosters of the teams that played in the Karjala Cup and see for yourself: www.finhockey.fi/maajoukkueet/a-maajoukkue/kausi_2003-2004/karjala-turnaus_5-10_11_2003_he/unfortunately, the link I had to the rosters from the other tournament (involving BLR) doesn't appear to work anymore so you can look at the one to the BLR official website I posted before somewhere around here. I hope this can help you as I don't know much more. R.

Kastsitsyn was sent down to CSKA-2, in 3 games he has 4 pts. 1g 3a. So far in 11 games with CSKA-2, he has 17 pts, 9 goals 8 assists.
Top prosepect Zherdev was also sent down to CSKA-2. Perhaps for his lack of production.

I sure wish Kats had chosen to sign with the Habs. Can't help thinking the Dogs would be a better place for him than CSKA 2 or being yoyoed by the Army coach (Tarasov?)

But on the other hand, if he can't make the elite team, is he really ready to come to North America? Look at Perez, he has trouble ajusting his game to the smaller rink and more physical play, and he scored 15 goals (fourth among his teamates IIRC) in the russian elite league the season before. My prediction for Kastsy, is that he will be signed next summer and will play next season in the AHL One year in the AHL, whoever the player is, always seems like a resonable minimum time in the minors for me specially for Europeans.

If you follow this logic, he is playing in the AHL at 19 and potentially in the NHL as early as 20, which is still really, really young by the Habs standards. It would be great if he is ready by then, but I don't think tearing up the CSKA-2 lineup and getting more than a point per game is really hampering his progress this season. He will be much more ready for a signing next summer with a real, full season under his belt, even if it is with CSKA-2 mainly.

2 goals today for Kastsitsyn. In the 4 games since being sent down again, 3 goals, 3 assists. In 12 games for CSKA-2 total, he's got 11 goals 8 assists 19 points.

the Russian Superleague update:
28.11. Lokomotiv - Ak Bars 3:2 -> Korneev played, no pts. Lada - Metallurg Nk 2:4 -> Buturlin scored the first and assisted on Lada's second goal; Tarasov was in goal for Metallurg earning one of the 3 stars award
30.11. Lada - Sibir 3:0 -> 1 assist for Buturlin Torpedo - Ak Bars 2:0 -> Korneev played Salavat - Metallurg Nk 2:3 -> Tarasov didn't play
I don't know what's going on with Kastitsyn as he hasn't appeared in any games that CSKA and CSKA-2 played since 21.11. (with CSKA-2).
EDIT: apparently, Viktor Tikhonov, the coach of the CSKA team, had a bad case of flu (which is why he couldn't coach his team at the last game) so I'm guessing Andrei might have it too.

Vadim Tarasov, who I doubt we'll ever see on this side of the Atlantic again, but will remain Habs property until he's 31, is tied for fifth in the Superleague with a GAA of 1.73 and is ranked eighth with a save % of .925.
Btw, Norm Maracle and Jean-François L'Abbé are starting goalies in the Superleague. Christian Bronsard shares duties for his team (Sibir).
