The 1-string is the high E in all the diagrams. The chords I cited are correct.
Personal taste….it sounds way better with the 4 chords.
Just like Canadians….nit-picking about America!

I tried learning guitar when I was younger, but I soon realized that I was missing my Saturday afternoons with my friends ... this is a clip I used before, but I'm hoping it fits here ... how difficult is it to learn "Classical Gas"? ... I understand what bridges are, but how many cords did it take to come up with this one ... I could look it up but I wouldn't know what I was reading ...

Great clip, Dis. Classical guitar is an amazing discipline…the finger-picking aspect alone is applicable to all guitar genres. Never mind the diversity and complexity of chords and transitions. Playing bass lines with your thumb while picking melodies with your other fingers. Gaaaaahhhh!
My brain doesn't "get" the language of musical theory. I learn best by watching/listening in the context of an existing song.
If I was going to begin to finger-pick, I think I'd try McCartney's "Blackbird" first. Or "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas.
You talk about practice time interfering with social/friend time. Imagine having parents demand that you learn and play….at a high level? I really wonder if that does more harm than good, psychologically/socially.
YouTube abounds with prodigious children….a pleasure to watch….but what price are they paying? Good topic for discussion. Some are just naturally gifted, and it comes easy to them.

This was the thing, CH, we always had a guitar player in the family ... my mother knew a few cords and loved to sing ... that kind of environment was all through my family and I only realized later that my parents wanted to keep that tradition going through me ... they didn't give me that kind of pressure, though ... I was allowed to give it up after two lessons (Ken Davidson Studio in Ottawa, at the time) ... then I was free to spend my weekends with my friends ... maybe if I had the lessons through the week ... here's a clip I found a long while back ... the teacher made a bet with her student that if he could learn "Classical Gas" in one week he didn't have to do his homework ... I'm thinking the guy could play guitar before that, anyway, but it's still a heck of a learning curve ...

He's definitely a guitarist. You can't learn all that in one week from square one.
Amazing what you can learn, and how quickly, with the right motivation. Ha!
Never too late to take up the guitar again, Dis. Chord charts, tabs, and video demos galore on the net.

Talk about making a song your own. The theme song to "The Last of the Mohicans" ... very well done ...

This is more if a gin and tonic subject than a music subject. If you ever have a chance to take a river cruise, I'd heartily recommend it. My wife and I are halfway thru a Budapest to Amsterdam trip and it's been a lot of fun. We used the Viking line and they're top notch. Cruising to Revensburg in Bavaria right now. It's not cheap but it's worth it. Nothing in Habland to talk about so thought I'd drop this line. Hope you're all having a good summer.
Cheers (literally).

Just got back from a Viking cruise! Aug 13-20...from Nuremberg-Regensburg-Passau-Melk-Vienna-Budapest. Top-notch...except the on-board entertainment (pianist/singer) was pretty hokey for my taste. A good player....and his voice was on key....but the same old standards with sub-par bed tracks every night. Then again, the median age was 70....so most loved it.
It was an opportunity to see parts of Europe we'd yet to visit...and my parents (82 and 77) had never been across the Atlantic....so it was the perfect trip for them...i.e, smooth ride along the Danube and the same room every night. They went on every included excursion as well. Very happy we got to do that together.
Outstanding cuisine. Great beer and wine!
So much history in that region. Inspired to do further research on all the emperors, kings, invaders, wars...
Went to Prague for the first two days, to get over jet-lag, If you're planning a similar cruise, I highly recommend Prague at either the beginning or end. 250K from Nuremburg....but a nice drive.

I wonder I that same piano player moved over to our ship, cH. He's exactly as you described. Hokey, but frankly it's not that important. We left BP on the 20th, same day you arrived. Did you see the fireworks that night to commemorate their national day? I can confirm the excellent food and top notch wine. Just sitting on our balcony right now, watching the river go by in the dark.
What boat (ship) were you on?

I was on the KARA….disembarked on the 20th.
Sounds like the same ship, if it's that same pianist. Shaved bald. If so, it'll be the same every night.
Is your cruise director a 6-foot woman from Holland with a black eye? If so, what a coincidence. (She fell during our cruise…and bruised herself pretty good.)
The chef and his staff are awesome.
We missed the fireworks…as we flew out during the day.

My parents were very moved by the excursion to Nuremberg….where we visited the Zeppelin field and Nazi Rallying Grounds. They recalled seeing newsreel clips of that spectacle when they were kids. Our excellent German guide made sure to point out that the American troops blew the gold swastika off the main grandstand on Hitler's birthday. (Most sites say it was blown-up on April 25th….with Hitler's birthday being the 20th.) Close enough. Interesting to know that the German education system takes great lengths to incrementally teach their children about the horrors of the Third Reich. How the grounds looked at their height. The main grandstand and colonnade with the gold swastika in the centre. Hitler spoke from the front-and-centre projection which was draped with a Nazi banner. How the main grandstand looks now. The colonnade was destroyed in 1967…as it was deemed too unstable. Ruins of terror.

Rats we just missed you! We're on the Atla (Norse goddess of water. Different pianist, too but similar repertoire. We had him upbeat last night during a music trivia contest when some of the ladies in our group raced to the dance floor and started an impromptu dance to one of the song answers, and he joined in playing the tune. Our program director is also Dutch, but a guy, with a Masters and PhD in Education. Go figger, what's he doing directing a cruise? Fortunately his balance is good and he has no black eye. We're in Nuremberg tomorrow but we aren't taking that optional excursion.
Am enjoying a more than palatable bottle of 4Euro French wine. Also bought a 9 Euro bottle whoch I expect to be very tasty. The bottomless stuff they're serving us is good, but I like to try some different varietals as well.
Sure wish I'd figured out we were in BP together. I think we were even tethered to the Kara on the 19th and 20th. We arrived late afternoon on the 19th. Damn. Oh well. Water under the Chain Bridge.

... and now for something completely different.
For the uninitiated, Paul Gilbert has been around a long long time. The above is an album of covers. It's a new avenue for him. He's turning the vocal tracks into guitar parts of his own interpretation. All the songs are by vocalists that inspired him at one time or another. Some Canadian content on there, and varied genres too. I'm half way into it, and I'm liking it.
