Now the speculation begins. I say Gilbert Brule or Bobby Ryan.

I'm not very familiar with the other top picks but I saw Brule live once and I'd be thrilled to have him on the Habs.

I'm pretty happy with this. If it weren't Crosby at the top, I'd be very happy. When's the last time we had a pick this high? It's been a long time. We will maximize value for the pick. As I watched the events unfold I couldn't help but think the ghosts were working for us. It's too bad we didn't get Crosby, but we could have gotten a lot less than we did.

OK. I'm gonna aska dumb question. Are they keeping this order every round, or are they inverting it each round? ie Pittsburg gets 1rst and 60th? Tampa gets 30th and 31rst?

Seeing how the Habs came oh so close to the no. 1 pick, it is really, really disappointing to not come away with the top prize.
But having said that, considering that the Habs made the playoffs last season and are going to pick 5th overall in a deep draft is still something to smile about.
PS. I hope Gainey goes for Brule.

Habs 5 and 55. 5 and 56, I think. From what I've seen, Brule is generally rated from 5th to 7th, so the Habs should have a chance at getting him if they want. But at 5'11" 180lbs, maybe he's not the big center we've been looking for for so long.

Crosby will be a Hab one day. When James Duthie was interviewing him and mentioned how close Montreal came to picking him, you could sense that Crosby was disappointed in not being picked by the Habs. When the top five rolled around with Montreal still in the hunt, Crosby said that he didn't want to get too excited and "jinx it."
For a kid who wanted so badly to play in Montreal, I can't see how he wouldn't want to come here when he becomes a free agent in seven years.
Actually, maybe it was a good thing that the Habs didn't get Crosby now. There is an immense amount of pressure on Sid the Kid as it is. On top of being annointed The Next One by the hockey world, including Wayne himself, there is pressure on Crosby to revive the league after a year-long lockout, to live up to his own hype and to live up to all the media attention that he's gotten in the last few years.
If Crosby came to Montreal now, the pressure on him would've been ten times worse, especially considering that he's wanted to play there all along. With all that pressure, there is a good chance that Crosby could've cracked and not lived up to his hype.
Considering everything now, the Habs get the 5th overall pick and will end up with a mature, established Crosby in seven years. In my optimistic world, I'm thinking that it's better that the Habs didn't get Crosby today. Does anyone else see it like this?

What would you do if you were Gainey:
1) Trying to trade your 5th pick for some good players? 2) Keeping your 5ht pick?

#5 overall is a potential franchise player. I'd keep the pick.

I'm really happy for Pick #5
I've heard a lot of good things about Brule, if he's there do it Bob!
On another note this pretty much puts Kovalev in Pittsburgh for next year
Lemieux Crosby Recchi or Kovalev
WOW

Well, Lemieux and Recchi are past their prime.... Lemieux especially is not likely to play 82 games, not even 60. Still they will have a great first line probably but they need to be very active in August in order to have a competitive team next season.
Getting a 5th pick is great for the Habs! Kots, Komisarek, Higgins, and this new pick could all become impact players in teh NHL.

Crosby (if he drops to #5 ha ha) Kopitar (can't teach size and he's young with more upside) Skille (Very polished playing for USA) Brule (I like tough, but is he really that good?)

Could have been much better, but realistically it could have been much worse. Good news, Leafs drop to 21 and Rangers to 16. Bruins 22.

Clarke loves that type of player and is a personal friend of the Ryan family. Wonder what Clarke'd be willing to give up if Ryan is still around at 5.

Lemieux [on TSN] strongly implied (or did he just out-and-out say?) that they'd be shoppers this year. Don't think they'll be the bottom spenders, as Crosby will be a draw, and they don't have big salaries holding them back.

If Tampa gets the sense that Lecavalier will only accept a 1 year deal in order to become an UFA next year, do you think they would agree to swap their pick (30th) with ours + something else?

All this looking to move down .... I don't think Gainey and co. are going to turn down the chance to draft a player this high in the draft. Considering what will likely be available, I say draft. There's Kopitar who scored at will in junior and showed his mettle against adults last year. There's Ryan, who comes with some baggage, but seems really promising. He has power forward written all over him. Then there's Brule. Many say he's the next Peca, which is nice. He's got loads of grit and talent. He plays bigger than his size, but I'm not sure Gainey wants another prospect with that sort of label. I think it will be between Ryan and Kopitar.
