Is this a message for Theo....will he be on the block....is this Gainey's plan: to trade Theo for some mature help on D or at forward?
With Danis and Huet....now Price.....I have a feeling Theo's days are #'d.
Thoughts?
To take a goalie at #5 when you already have depth at that position just doesn't make sense otherwise to me.
Completely shocked with this move.

Well, if Price becomes a franchise goalie in 3 or 4 years, it'll be a good pick.

That's certainly a surprise pick. Personnaly, I don't like it, but I'll let the habs brass the benefit of the doubt.
IMHO, drafting a goalie with a top pick is almost always a bad idea.
Oh well. I remember how everyone was pissed off about last season Chipchura choice... I hope Price ends up justifying the habs choice in a few years...

With Danis and Huet....now Price.....I have a feeling Theo's days are #'d. Was Roy a goner when Theo was drafted ? For the last couple of years, I've been reminding people that you need to draft your future goalie several years in advance, Theo was drafted in 1994, when Roy was in his prime, essentially 10 years after Roy was drafted. 11 years later, we had a need in goal again. Even if Theo signs a 4-year contract, at the end of that Price will barely be ready to be a starter. As to Danis, he's 23 or so, he's the real competition for Theo inside the organisation. Danis could conceivably nudge Theo out, but Price isn't competition for Theo.

I don't see the need for a goaltender with Théodore, Danis, Halak, Heino-Lindberg on the depth chart. But if he's the next Roy, why not ?

Man, I can't believe Gainey dropped the ball.
You have Columbus praying that Brule will drop......even if you're going to go with Price, you trade down and pick up a later draft pick or something.....
Absolutely unreal. I feel like I've been punched in the gut.

T.O. was very high on Price. Maybe the brass are thinking of a trade with TO?
Theo Huet Danis Halak Heino-Lindberg and now Price.
Something smells...

Was Roy a goner when Theo was drafted ? [/quote] Theodore went in the second round 44th overall....not #5. There seems to be a message here. Roy had two Stanley Cups on his back by the time Theo was drafted in 94. Not even a close comparison to this draft.

Theo is nearly 29, Huet is similar in age and is a career backup, Danis still needs seasoning (if not, Huet is expendable), Halak and H-L are totally unproven Euros, who should come over to get experience before being seriously considered as depth, and an 18 year old Price. I just don't see this as being all that surprising a move, other than the fact that we didn't see Price as a top 5 pick. If we'd been choosing 15th, I'd have been rooting for a goalie.

Still, 10 years after drafting one goalie, you go for another one. I just can't accept that any kind of a competent GM or scouting staff would use a top-5 pick to send a message.
The only message to me for Theo is "you aren't the only goalie in the universe", but he already had to know that. By the time Price is ready to be an NHL starter, Theo will be beyond caring, he'll be either 33-34 and on the tail-end of his career or he'll be gone.

No doubt about it, it was a VERY shocking pick. As for Theos days being numbered, I really don't think so. History has shown us that goalies take alot longer to develop than forwards or defencemen. It will be 4 to 5 years before Price should be expected to make the NHL much less make an impact in the NHL. I am a little upset because I, like many of you wanted Brule or Kopitar, but I will concede to the scouting staff and Bob Gainey. After all, they are the professionals. All we are is a bunch of arm chair GM's. Knowledgeable... yes, but professional...no.

If Kopitar ends up in TO, I'm gonna snap. Still a long way to #21, but... Please no Leafs, Bruins, Rangers. Edit: So the Kings get him, at #11. Did you see Kopitar with that wicked defensive play on Weight in the clip TSN showed? They also mentioned RedLine believes Kopitar may be the best pure goalscorer in the entire draft. Who the frig needs that?!?

We should not forget that Price was described as the best goalie in this draft. I suspect people are deceived because they would have loved to get a flashy name. Goalies hardly become fans favorite. But if Timmins and co believe Price is the real deal, then I don't have any problem with it. Even if I would have taken Brulé with that pick

Théodore has reasonable market value (depending on his agent). As an asset he should provide a good return. Who knows, perhaps Gainey has had a deal lined up before this draft.

Let Danis and Huet take over....then Price is ready to go. Sure, why not trade Koivu, Souray and Zednik for more picks while we're at it ? You can't only think of the future, you have to ice a good team now. Top teams (including Gainey-led Dallas) do their best to win, each and every year. Trading Theo right now probably won't help with that. Fact is, the new NHL will make "asset value" to be worth less, and teams will hang onto players more and let them go as UFAs rather than constantly try to maximise asset value through trades.

Sight... I guess the Habs won't trade him today... Dipietro was a first overall pick is still not an established NHL goalie... I'm still very very bitter...
Talent Analysis
Scout #1: Carey Price is an outstanding talent. He’s a very good goalie. Moves well, good size, competes hard, plays well under pressure. He carried his team as a 17-year-old and that’s a lot to say about a young goalie. I think he’s going to be a tremendous goaltender in the NHL.
Scout #2: I was a bit disappointed with his play at the U-18 but to me he’s technically really sound, he’s big and he stands up more than most goaltenders do. It seems the nights he has trouble are when he’s down on his knees. He really understands the game.

Maybe they'll trade Theo for the rights to Pronger? Look at me, I'm dreaming in technicolour again. You mean those original, badly coloured movies ? Because to me, a team with an overpaid defenseman, no cap room (so no Kovalev or other offensive winger), no starting goalie and in fact no NHL goalie with any NHL experience before january, isn't exactly HDTV...

Théodore is demanding the highest salry on the team—not a minor consideration (among the other baggage he carries—the true extent of which we are unaware).
Théodore is likely the Habs most tradeable asset.
