Poehling gets his goal last night on a breakaway. Hey Max, take notes bud. I love the St. Cloud logo... ST Canadiens

Nice shot from Ikonen on his goal today. 4th point in last three games and 5th point in last five games.

NCAA playoffs started for three guys last night, with Poehling, Primeau, and Hawkey all on the winning side. They are up 1-0 in their conference quarters. Evans semi final action starts tonight.

When your +/- is 1.5 times your point total, you're doing something right.
That shot from Ikonen was pulled from waaaay back. He'll likely need to shorten that release in North America, but his shot is one of his big selling features.

Is it already NCAA tournament or conference tournaments? I guess I really do not understand the structure of college hockey. I am watching the Notre Dame game to see Evans. He is a smart player, very calm with the puck and sound positioning in all three zones. He looks a little smaller than what he is listed and while I believe his skating is adequate for the NHL Evans certainly does not possess by high end speed or agility.
Bergevin needs to sign him as soon as NCAA tournament play finishes. Assuming he signs, I imagine him in Laval next season with the chance to profile in both offensive and defensive roles.

Still conference championships. Each conference winner goes to the 16 team NCAA tourney along with the top ranked teams that did not win conferences. Four regionals with each winner going to the Frozen Four. Evans and Poehling’s teams will qualify regardless for the next round, due to their high pairwise rankings. Northeastern and Providence have a shot too. Yes, he needs to sign Evans. He also needs to go after Jimmy Schuldt, Poehling’s teammate. Lots of teams interested in him.

Northeastern (Primeau), Providence (Hawkey) advance to their semis. Notre Dame (Evans) advance to the Big Ten final. St Cloud State (Poehling) lost in OT against Miami, so play their deciding game tomorrow as the best of three is all evened up. Poehling did score tonight though.

NW, this college hockey stuff is confusing. Some conferences play their own end of season tournament with single elimination game format and other conferences play series to advance through the bracket?

Well, we certainly have a goalie factory. Makes sense, as it's the least valuable trade commodity. If someone had the gonads to trade Price and Weber, in about 3 years the Habs would be really, really good.

Well, we certainly have a goalie factory. Makes sense, as it's the least valuable trade commodity. If someone had the gonads to trade Price and Weber, in about 3 years the Habs would be really, really good. Our best goaltending stretch this season has been since Price got hurt, and we have been forced to go with a waiver wire castoff and a young AHL guy. Now, I would not be so bold to extrapolate and conclude that we could be a contender if we went a year with those two guys, traded Price, and reinvested those bucks in either a stud LHD or Centre. However, it does show that winning games without an all-world guy in nets is possible, even with our terrible defence and pop gun offence. You could likely get a pretty good second tier goalie with some of those picks we have. Now, the odds of Berg ever doing that are sooooooooo low.

From now and the next few years, Price would only be worth it to a contender who lost their number 1. Even then, we are not going to get a stud 21 year old center.
All about that ridiculous contract......

A very comprehensive write up on Tyszka’s progression this season, including from earlier on this season. My game views have all been before Christmas, so I was really happy to read this. Three of our four WHL guys are trending upwards, with Scott Walford sort of staying level. Playoffs around the corner for all four. Fleury knows he will be playing to the end as Regina hosts the cup, and Brook’s team has been at or near the top of the Dub since day one. The best WHL playoff series could end up being if Moose Jaw and Swift Current clash. Too bad it would be before the finals. Seattle and Victoria will have a tougher, and likely shorter, playoff run...but never say never. www.habseyesontheprize.com/catching-the-torch/2018/3/15/17118502/catching-the-torch-canadiens-prospect-stats-highlights-dont-sleep-on-jarret-tyszka-fleury-bitten

Three of our NCAA prospects play in their conference finals today. Notre Dame (Evans) for the Big Ten, St Cloud State (Poehling) for NCHC, and Providence (Hawkey) for Hockey East. Their teams all won their semis to advance.
Hawkey did so at Primeau’s expense, as the two goalies went head to head last night. It took to the first OT period, but Providence prevailed 3-2. Hawkey faced 40 shots and likely the best line in NCAA hockey, so a bit of an upset for some. Northeastern should still make the NCAA tourney though due to their good pairwise ranking. That will all be confirmed once the conference championships wrap up this weekend.
In the OHL, both our guys are headed to the playoffs. Hamilton and Will Bitten have the top seed in the eastern conference. Sarnia and Pezzetta are in as well in the west, with the second highest points in the OHL, second only to SSM.
All four WHL guys are in, from Moose Jaw as the top ranked team to Seattle as the last wildcard spot.

Only one our three NCAA guys in championship games ended up winning.
Jake Evans had two assists, including this one that won them a Big Ten title in OT.

The CHL playoffs and the NCAA tournament (single knock-out from here on in!!) start tonight for most of our prospects. Will Bitten and Hamilton got things going last night and they emerged victorious, as expected given they are the top seed in the OHL's East. Our European prospects are also in action in their league playoffs. Vejdemo had an assist in his team's win and a few folks who watched him play had nice things to say about his game. It will be interesting to see how he does this playoffs and next year, as the Habs will have to make a decision about him by the summer of 2019. Given our lack of centres and given his good skating and two way play, I find it hard to imagine he does not at least get an entry level deal after his final season in the SHL next year. If they gave Pezzetta a contract....

Early NCAA results. Evans assists on the GWG in OT. Off to the regional final.
Poehling and top ranked St Cloud State stunned by Air Force 4-1. One and done. Season over.

Taking other teams for granted it seems. SCSU didn't get their game going until the 3rd period, down 2-0, and then the AF goalie took over. Oh well, Poehling is getting used to disappointment early.

Is the expectation that Poehling wants to play with his brothers for another year? I thought I heard during that game that although his twin brothers are a year older than him the whole gang was only in second year of NCAA eligibility.
I hope that Ryan Poehling reports to Laval in April 2019 because from a development perspective I cannot see the value of playing four years of NCAA hockey.

His brothers aren't NHL prospects as far as I know, so it will simply be up to the Habs to make his move to pro ranks attractive enough that he leaves college early. A typical entry level contract should do that. One can always get their degree later.

He has said he wants to be ready before he signs. He mentioned that the NHL is not a development league, so he will need to work on things to be ready. Seems like a guy with his head screwed on right. I see another year in the NCAA. He really developed nicely this year and he has a great coach (the USA world junior coach too) and is part of a good program. Sure beats playing for Sly. He can also get another year at the world juniors and likely have a big impact there this time.

Hayden Hawkey pitched a shutout, and they advance to the regional final today against Evans and Notre Dame. One will be going home after tonight.
Primeau and Northeastern play their semi tonight.
Our CHL guys got off in a bad foot in the playoffs last night, with their teams taking a hit. It is a marathon, not a sprint.

While I'd like to see the Habs with a real centre ASAP, it's more important that he gains more strength and works under a real coach rather than be subjected to the vagaries of Laval. I understand the brain trust (3 or 4 of them) were at the Halifax / Baie Comeau game yesterday. Scouting Zadina? Or Joel Bouchard?

Poehling really does seem mentally and emotionally mature. I am okay with Poehling staying at St. Cloud one more season. But he is physically filling out pretty quickly and I think two more years in Minnesota would not serve any purpose from a hockey development perspective.
