Yes it is... what a novel concept

The captain and associates named. Building on Dis’ post on McCarron, I see Bouchard adding Big Mac as one of the four alternating associates as another key move in getting this guy on track (if at all possible) by giving him a key leadership role. Miles ahead of Lefebvre’s “strategies”.

Is it strange that so many people--Lefebvre, Daigneault, Lacroix, Therrien--who worked many seasons for the club in the Geoff Molson and Marc Bergevin era fail to find equivalent or better employment upon their non-voluntary departures?
Does Molson ever, in passing, ask his GM "I wonder why all the guys you hired are either working in lesser positions or not working at all?"

The Bouchard Era started off on the right foot last night, with a 3-2 come from behind win. The Rocket scored the last three goals of the game, all in the third period including the game winner with 35 seconds left. Goals by Chaput, Froese and Kulak (GWG). Froese was 1+1 and McCarron had two apples. Lindgren got the win. www.rocketlaval.com/en/rocket-open-season-with-comeback-victory-over-bruins/

Apparently the AHL live feed just had one camera angle in Providence last night, but here are the Rocket’s three goals.

The Rocket make their first cuts and assign five to various ECHL teams. They are down to 26 players on their roster. I know Olofsson is still practicing with an injury jersey, so he is not yet cleared to play. www.rocketlaval.com/en/laval-rocket-announces-roster-moves/The only minor "surprises" to me are that they keep three goalies in Laval (at least for now - Marcoux should play in the ECHL and get some starts) and Pezzetta has done enough to stick around with the Rocket.

That Providence goalie let in two stinkers imo.

Laval have a much better home opener result. 5-2 win tonight. Goals by Sklenicka (first AHL point), Grenier, Agostino, Jevpalovs and Froese. Lindgren with the win. McCarron, Fleury and McCarron with some of the assists.
Some of the goals.

This does not end up as a goal tonight, but this is what McCarron needs to keep doing. Skating instruction over the summer, a new coach who is pushing him the right way, and who gives him an “A”. Baby steps.

When I see McCarron make plays like that, it makes me realize how the much the Habs need his size.
I'm hoping Bouchard is the man to make that happen. He's a lot more intense than Sly who seemed to do little more than blink when things went awry.

Bingo won the rematch 2-1 today, despite the Rocket heavily outshooting and out chancing them. Stuff happens.
McNiven in net. Evans with the only goal. A nice break on the wing from a great bump pass by Lamarche.

Laval 5 Wolf Pack 2. The Rocket dominate the Rangers’ farm team tonight. Goals by Chaput (two shorties), Vejdemo (his first AHL goal), Shinkaruk and Froese. Vejdemo also got an assist tonight in addition to his first goal.

Baby steps. Who did they hire for skating instruction? Barb Underhill works with A LOT of players. Imagine though, 5 years into his career this is the first I can recall the club actually going out and hiring a skating coach for him. If I'm forgetting someone along the way, I apologize, however this should have happened on day one. That replay shows that he's not exactly "slow" in a straight line. Once he gets up to speed he moves pretty well. It's getting those big legs churning. Beyond that, I sincerely hope Bouchard tells him to stop fighting as much as possible. He's not going to make the league as a fighter. He's not going to get back to where he was in his first two pro seasons by spending time in the penalty box in 5 minute chunks. He'll be 24 in March. Boyle didn't make the league as an everyday player til he was 25. I still maintain he's the comparable. To that end, there's still some time. Shame he tread water under Lefebvre for so long.

Springfield beat Laval 5-3 last night (last goal was an EN), despite a good effort from the boys. McCarron had two goals, both of which really show his improved play this season. The second one where he starts behind the net is exactly the kind of play a big body forward in the NHL should make.
The rematch is underway right now. McNiven in net today.

Springfield completes the weekend sweep of the Rocket with another close 4-2 win (last goal was an EN again). Agostino with both goals. McNiven with the loss and 3 goals on only 15 shots.
There is an early trend developing here for the Rocket. They outplay and outshoot their opponents, but come up short at the end of the game. They are not converting enough of their chances and the goalie tandem is also playing sub 900 save percentage goaltending. Not good enough.
Yesterday’s Highlights.

Interesting....IMO, Bergevin has never appreciated scoring...and has never won anything of consequence. Dubas, IMO and taking into account his SSM days, has never appreciated defense enough and has never won anything, though his teams score at will it seems. If one could combine the two somehow.... PS. From having outstanding depth in goal, one wonders about it now. A year ago, we were looking at Price, Niemi, LIndgren, McNiven, Hawkey and Primeau with the latter 3 having bright futures. Today: Price...iffy Niemi ....good backup LIndgren...AHL goalie? NHL backup? Hawkey...traded to Edmonton McNiven....trending down instead of up Primeau...still looking good. Quite the change. But goalies are weird. They can become a different creature the next season. Anyways, today our depth is pretty shallow compared to last year.

Under Lefebvre, the team defense was almost always terrible so I kind of understood why McNiven and Lindgren had poor numbers. Now, with the Rocket being a strong in possession and scoring chances, it is harder to figure out what is going on with those guys.

For me this is a bit of a transition year for the Rocket/Canadiens. In all honesty, to me there isn't much there (at the moment) in terms of good prospects. McCarron maybe, the two goalies I suppose, and... Cale Fleury I guess? The rest are real long shots, AHL veterans, or tweeners like Kulak and maybe Olofsson (though I'm holding out hope he's a Reilly-like find). Not a heck of a lot there to hang your hat on, as the kids say.
I think next year, when guys like Poehling and Suzuki make the team, and some of those hot-shot defensemen like Josh Brook and Jarret Tyska are knocking on the door, I think that's when the real fun will begin and when Bouchard will really have to show if he has what it takes to develop top notch talent. Right now I could care less how much he gets out of Kenny Agostino, or Michel Chaput - it's the Grade A guys that are not yet on the team that will be his real challenge.

The perennial powerhouse Marlies edge the Rocket 2-1 in OT.
Fleury scored his first pro goal with 3:40 left in the third to send this puppy to OT.

Olofsson was injured again, looks like his shoulder...AGAIN. The guy is a china doll and seems to have been on the IR more than he has been healthy enough to play over his short pro career. Not sure if we have a legitimate tweener or a guy who will never be healthy enough to make a mark.
Guess he is out for a while as the Rocket have signed defender Ryan Sproul to a PTO.

After 9 games the Rocket have 7 points. I didn't expect them to set the AHL on fire, but I was hoping for at least a mediocre record and a shot at a playoff spot. Maybe it's just adjusting to Bouchard's system. I think he handles people well, unlike Lefebvre, but it's certainly been a slow start for the Rocket. Is it just not enough talent? Goaltending not good enough? Andrew Zadarnowski, who follows them closely, says their PP has really let them down. One could think they have the same issue as the parent team, not enough natural scorers.
Anyway, hoping it gets better. You want your younger players getting used to winning.

They are 7th in their division, but just two points out of fourth and a playoff spot. They are playing much more structured hockey, getting more shots and chances, and they have been in most games. They just struggle to score, and their PP has been very poor. They really miss Taormina who was the QB all last year. Nobody has stepped up and taken over running the PP. Their goaltending also is below average. That should get better. It must be a bit frustrating for coaches and players both to be coming up short. Some of those good efforts have to convert into points soon.

Gustav Olofsson, it was nice to know you. He had surgery for his latest shoulder injury and will be out six months. The Rocket did get two games (well part of the second game, as he did leave it after he was injured) in that trade this season. He is an RFA at the end of this season, so the team still holds his rights if they chose to do so.
