Some movement in our minor league goalies. McNiven gets sent to the ECHL to get some games in this week, as the Rocket don't play all week. Marcoux gets called up to get some practice time in with the AHL team.

Depres on the short term should have a varying impact on the development of our key defensive prospects in Laval. At the top of that list is Fleury, who has been injured for the last two weeks. I have not heard anything about an imminent return, but I would have to think he gets a spot back once he is healthy. He was playing well before his injury and getting good ice time. Lernout seems to have his spot, although he will move down another notch as he already has with the arrival of Alzner and Mete. The two Czechs are likely the most impacted, as they could see more time as healthy scratches. Lamarche and Plant are just fillers. Olofsson is out for a while with injury again.
It will get crowded once Juulsen gets cleared and the Habs have to send Kulak back.

With the ability to move the puck being so important in the game right now, the advanced stats metric of controlled exits is a fairly good gauge of the ability of a defender to control the transition play under possession. The Rocket leader in this category just so happens to be their youngest defenseman, followed by the guy who has played the last couple of games alongside Shea Weber. It is also clear that this is not where Lernout shines.

However, then you realize they could have had Point (along with 30 other teams several times).

I watched Lernout a bit in juniors, and he had decent mobility for his size and he also had a reasonable first pass. Sometimes the adjustment to the pros where you have a lot less time and space and have to make decisions so much quicker is where players plateau. Since he has been drafted, we have seen other RHD draft picks like Juulsen and Fleury pass him on the depth chart. Based on projections, Brook should be next, but he still will have to prove himself once he turns pro. Brook's mobility and hockey IQ/vision do bode well for a decent transition to the pro game though.

Certainly a third pair/pp guy is well within grasp.

I know it's a "development league"....but....
I see the Rocket are still on the launch pad....8-13-2-1. A dead-last .396 winning pct. after 24 games.
2-6-1-1 in their last 10.
I know they don't have Calder horses...but are our prospects looking ANY better under Bouchard?
It's certainly not showing up in the standings.

The best guys on the squad are either career AHLers, callups due to injury, or both. Cale Fleury, Alexandre Alain, Lukas Vejdemo, and Daniel Audette are all first year AHL pros. Given what most accomplish in their first year of an AHL path, I think they're doing pretty well. Lindgren is doing yeoman's work to be 7-9.

But it brings up a good point. I certainly thought Bouchard was a quality candidate. He ran the Armada for 3 seasons with 2 near .700 seasons among them. The third sandwich season was a .456, but they made the playoffs each year, losing in the 1st and second rounds and in the finals. Not bad.
Here's a stat to ponder over, though. His top scorers in his first year had 102 and 100 points in 72 games. In season 2 his top scorers had 74 in 52 and 42 in 35. In the 3rd season his top 2 scorers had 52 in 54 and 47 in 60. This is in a juniour league where top guys easily put up more than 1 point per game. So it would appear that Bouchard's success is predicated on defense and goal prevention. Sound familiar?
I really like what I read and heard about Bouchard, his coaching style and how he handles players, but I think I'll keep an eye on that scoring thing.
Bouchard and Bergevin were teammates in Pittsburgh for 7 games in 2002/03.

More works to be done. Some of those picks will start in Laval. Regardless, there needs to be a culture shift too. Bouchard has a lot of work to do.
