That's very thin down the left side. They could just barely afford to hold onto Marleau for the last year of his deal, but that defense is grim. If they could pawn him off, that's where some of that cash would need to go. Gardiner is a UFA, and someone will over pay for him. "Plug" ... brilliant!

The Leafs might be better off letting Arizona take Matthews on a offer sheet and using that money to get some D Maybe the Leafs should ask MB where they can find those plugs

Congrats Josh, you were a warrior game in and game out and I loved watching you in a habs jersey.

He's in the last year of his contract paying $4.05 mill. He might be involved with a deadline deal, so they don't let him walk for nothing. If they DO let him walk, Berg may pick him up a la Alzner.

As was obvious from the start, all the easy stuff was done in the first 3 or 4 years. Sell off, take on bad contracts, draft high. Now begins the hard stuff and building a team with too much top end talent has its own challenges. If I were Dubas, I'd look at trading one of Tavares, Marner or Matthews. IMO, I'd move Matthews. He has the most value and you should be able to get 2 or 3 very good players for him, who can be ghat depth. They'd still have Tavares, Marner and Reilly as the key elite players.

I wonder if Kadri would be available? I don't see him as a Babcock favourite. Danualt and Benn with a pick?

Kind of odd because we have the smallest team in the NHL.

I don't have the right cable package so I rely on TSN/Sportsnet for the Habs highlights. Turned TSN on this morning &, of course, we get the full Leafs post mortem. They spent the first 6 minutes of the show breaking down the Leaf game. Of course, that doesn't give them enough time to give decent coverage for the rest of the league. I saw Tatar's goals & that was about it for MTL highlights. At least they gave the Flames some attention.

HF Toronto--lots of posts calling for Babcock to be fired. Fickle group. 9 games ago, Stanley was all but travelling just a few blocks from the Hall of Fame. All hail Shanahan, Dubas, and Babcock! 3-6-0 later... In my estimation, they're ahead of schedule. Everybody knows their D needs improvement in order to take on the likes of Tampa, Winnipeg over the course of a series.

Salty, jeje, Elias Lindholm mocks Carolina and their fans after Calgary's victory.
Not too surprising that trade is not working out for Carolina. Don Waddell has a pretty poor record as a GM in the league, though in fairness the big Carolina-Calgary blockbuster was one part hockey, one part economics. Dundon did not want to be saddled with too many big time longish deals for top RFAs (which is the reality of the contemporary NHL), so I guess Waddell did what he could, sort of.

Waddell was a mistake from the start. Dundon is cheap, plain and simple. How many assistant GM's turned down that job after Ron Francis was let go? 6, 7? That's not a coincidence. Either they weren't offered the autonomy, the term needed to be successful, or an appropriate salary. Waddell obviously didn't care about any of those things. Pay attention to the guys he hired, because they won't be Grade A material. What's Carolina most famous for this year? Their end of game fan 'celebrations'. That's a good basis for success on the ice. Dazzle them with packaging, not content.
Waddell would be one of the top 5 GM's I'd be looking to trade with.

Meanwhile, Calgary's quietly having a stellar season. TSN is more interested in talking Leafs and Jets, but aren't saying too much about Calgary's season.

Leafs and Matthews agree to extension. 5 years and $11.634 million aav. My gut says Marner wants as much term as possible. If he signs for 8, he isn't taking less than $12 million per. What they'd be faced with is below, without moving out Marleau - who has a nmc/ntc. They're thin on lw, and defense. Kapanen likely goes to shore up the defense. Even if Marner signs the exact same deal as Matthews, they're still $1 million over what everyone is expecting the cap to go to.
