The score says the habs might take Kaliyev... we could definately use a goal scorer... of they want a D, then Soderstrom might be the guy www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1755689He's definitely been hovering around the 10-15 range. There's some risk associated with the pick. Skating and work ethic/commitment have been noted as concerns. His coaches have attempted to quash the work ethic thing. In the videos I've seen, he gets where needs to be when he needs to be there. Mark Stone isn't a good skater and it doesn't hold him back. If Kaliyev is smart enough, he can overcome it.

If Kaliyev is smart enough, he can overcome it. I wonder what Bouchard could do with this kid I'm honestly not all that concerned with the work ethic complaint. That can be taught, and his coaches have said that his commitment to learn and do as instructed went up a lot this year from last. What you can't teach is goal scoring. He and Caufield are two of the very best in this draft imo. It will be down to whether or not he can keep up at the pro level. He can right now, but can he at the pro level? If he's got it between the ears, I think he can. His shot is so good that he can score from almost anywhere, and as someone trailing the play a little I think he can score a lot that way.

True... you can't teach goal scoring and you can't teach smarts. You can improve other thing like foot speed, strength etc

Here is a list of guys who have scored 50 or more goals in the OHL: OHL 50 goal scorersWhile there are some big names on there, by and large it's not that impressive a list. Read into that what you will.

Read into that what you will. It's true, you can't simply look at the number and take it at face value. Watch some video though. He's got an elite shot. That shot should be good enough to score at the NHL level if he can translate the rest of his game to the NHL.

True... you can't teach goal scoring and you can't teach smarts. You can improve other thing like foot speed, strength etc Even if he isn’t the fastest guy in the draft he would improve the PP. how fast do you need to be, 5 on 4 in the offensive zone.

With the end of the second round of the playoffs, the actual positions of our last few picks that we had acquired from other teams were confirmed. Here is a list (this saved me typing it out!).

I suspect they would take a defenseman but it would be interesting if they wanted to unite the Suzuki brothers. Montreal have had a lot of brother combos over the years but this would likely be the fastest.

With the end of the second round of the playoffs, the actual positions of our last few picks that we had acquired from other teams were confirmed. Here is a list (this saved me typing it out!). Those 3 picks in the 5th round are interesting. "What?, you say? Fifth round picks are interesting?" I have no idea why, but Timmins and Co. seem to have better luck than usual with their 5th round picks. Going back to 2004 (I won't list the misses as there are a few of those, but I'll mention the guys you may at least have heard of. 2004 - Mikhail Grabovski 2009 - Gabriel Dumont 2010 - Brendan Gallagher (Let the bells ring out and the banners fly!) 2011 - Darren Dietz. Hey...top scoring defenseman in the KHL last year. Not too shabby 2012 - Charles Hudon Been dry since then, but 2017 brought us Jarret Tyszka (my big hope) and last year, Cole Fonstad, who is likely going to the MEM Cup after the next game. Most teams don't get a sniff by the 5th round. Ottawa picked Mike Hoffman and Max Lajoie (and Mark Borowiecki if you want to count him, over the same span). Tampa just Nikita Nesterov. San Jose's best pick was Freddie Hamilton. LA's Collin Miller. So....being superstitious, I'd rather have more 5th round picks than 4th round picks.

He's on my radar still, but his play has been so good that he may sneak up into the top ten. They've had to juggle lines for much of the playoffs - with Bo Groulx out most of the playoffs. He's managed to elevate his play despite that.

We only pick what’s left after 14 other GMs have made their selection. Do we go for another fourth line sure thing or shoot for a possible team scoring leader. Risk for reward Need We don’t need another fourth liner. Betty finds them in bunches without wasting a pick.

Thanks, Dis. I really like Harley. He is very intelligent, a good skater even when projecting to the top level, and plenty of room to fill out of physically. This kid is quite skilled too, though I wonder if he is top flight in terms of being a creative driver of play. At #15 I would have no problem with picking this kid and developing him.
When Ottawa picked Chabot I do not think most hockey men thought he was highly likely to develop into a first pair d-man. Harley is kind of in that mold and at the same point in his junior career he is not behind Chabot from a productivity standpoint. As an aside, I still suggest Molson keeps the RFA offer sheet powder dry for a Chabot offer sheet next summer.

Unless one of the top forwards falls on our lap at #15 (and with this draft it is very possible - from pick #3 onwards can go in so many different directions), I think a skilled LHD is definitely a strong possibility with our first round pick. There are a few prime candidates who might be available and under consideration by the Habs at this point. I have provided a bit of a link to an available online resource that has a decent write-up of each. Ville Heinola, LHD, Luuko (Liiga - Finland), 5'11" 181 lbs lastwordonhockey.com/2019/04/17/ville-heinola-scouting-report/Thomas Harley, LHD, Mississauga (OHL), 6'3" 183 lbs lastwordonhockey.com/2019/04/16/thomas-harley-scouting-report/Cam York, LHD, USNDTP (USHL), 5'11" 174 lbs lastwordonhockey.com/2019/04/12/cam-york-scouting-report/Philip Broberg, LHD, AIK (Allsvenskan - SWE2), 6'3' 203 lbs lastwordonhockey.com/2019/04/08/philip-broberg-scouting-report-2019-nhl-draft-9/And for giggles, Seider is a RHD has moved up the ranks this year based on his size, skating and his strong showing against men all season (he was also on the German World Championship team and held his own until he was injured). Moritz Seider, RHD, Adler Mannheim (DEL), 6'4 198 lbs lastwordonhockey.com/2019/04/22/moritz-seider-scouting-report/

As an aside, I still suggest Molson keeps the RFA offer sheet powder dry for a Chabot offer sheet next summer. Interesting proposition. I know Berg has sort of referenced "the old boys code" when asked about offer sheets, but this might be a very interesting case. If there was a team that could possibly balk at matching a big offer sheet, it is the old cheapo Sens as long as Melnyk controls the purse strings. Now, the Sens do have a few young players that they need to build their team around, and Chabot should be one of them (and Brannstrom, Tkachuk, etc.).

Yeah, Bergevin says he would not utilize this tool if the club would match. Of course, this begs the question of how would he know for certain the club would match? And if the Sens are still limping along next spring pinching pennies and no arena deal, Ottawa could be vulnerable because of Melnyk. What if Molson instructed Bergevin to present an offer sheet to Chabot's agent for 6 years/$52 million, not an insane cap hit for Montreal and the compensation for the Sens would only be two first, a second, and a third.
The key to springing this trap on Ottawa would be rooted in the details of the contract. If the money is generally front-loaded as well as nearly all of it being paid in July 1 bonuses, Melnyk may not match. Of course, if Dorion has any inkling that an offer sheet is coming, he would do well to trade Chabot at the 2020 draft because I am sure he could get better value than settling for the picks.

Man, living in Ottawa as a Hab fan would be fun if MB gave an offer sheet to Chabot, he accepted and the Sens didn't match... my neighbours and friends would hate the Habs even more than after 'the microfracture'...

I know that's a cliche, and teams by their own admission don't always do that, but still. Any left shooting defensemen we get in the first round probably won't have any NHL impact for another three years, so solving the left shooting defenseman to play with Shea Weber problem isn't going to come from this draft (barring a trade of course). And long term, while we don't have a ton of depth there, we do have some players. Mete, of course, who is still only 20, and the Czar Romanov, who I am really hyping in my own mind. Plus, I wouldn't sleep on Jordan Harris either, who I am boldly predicting will have a strong year next season. Of course there is always room for more - and Harley in particular seems very interesting to me - but if it's another center or winger then so be it. (the main point of this post was to be one of the first posters to hype Jordan Harris for next season! )

It would be amazing if Podkolzin, Newhook or Broberg are sitting there at 15. But I would perfectly okay with Harley. And I would be okay with Lavoie if Timmins thinks he is the most talented player available and that the kid drives himself (not family) to improve because of his own love of the game. But I do not want the fact that he is big or a local kid to become a subconscious tiebreaker when it is not really a tie.

(the main point of this post was to be one of the first posters to hype Jordan Harris for next season! ) I think there are going to be some choices to be made at 15, especially if one of the forwards is still available. I fully expect TT to go BPA, but you know there will be a few LHD chosen amongst their 10 picks this draft. There could be some decent options available with those two second round picks. Too bad they were not a bit higher as some good players are going to go in the 20-40 range. Still going to be some nice options at 46 and 50. Love the Harris plug! I watched a bunch of his and Primeau’s games this year, and he did very well for a freshman, right out of high school, playing on the top pair on his off side. With Davies gone this year, I expect he will be their top LHD.
