ON the surface, selecting Weber seems foolish. Hmmmmmm. What if it's a fairly young team that Seattle puts together? What if they think his leadership skills and his low actual salary makes it worth choosing him? He'd be a lot close to his home town. If the Habs are still a bubble team, might Weber look at it favourably? I'm not so sure it's an absolute slam dunk decision to leave him open. It may be forced on the team simply because they have a lot of guys they don't want to lose and may take the risk. Another key factor is considering how good is Weber at that age? Maybe he's not even a productive Hab? What do you do then? Petry, Brook, Fleury, Juulsen. They may all be more efficient than Weber. Or not. But only Brook, I think will not have to be protected. Mete will have to be. Kulak will have to be. I don't think they'll have any choice but to leave Weber available. And I'd probably take one of the kids rather than Weber. As of right now … Alzner has to be protected (so does Petry and Chariot)

What do you mean, Skilly? Those guys don't have to be protected, do they?
Petry will be a UFA after the 2020-21 season, so he could be gone regardless if he's not re-signed. Chiarot would have 1 year left on his deal and could be unprotected depending on the circumstances. Alzner couldn't get claimed on waivers so he's a lost cause anyway.
At a minimum it will be an interesting dynamic. I agree with 17 that there may be guys on the roster at that time (cheaper, younger) that may be worth protecting more than Weber. Or maybe leaving Weber unprotected will be a calculated gamble that Seattle won't take him because of the cap hit, which is a likely scenario IMO.

If the same rules are in effect, I believe that players with a modified no-trade clause do not have to be protected.
Among the Habs d-men, one would assume that Petry will be protected if the plan is the re-sign him; likewise, if Mete is consolidated as an above average NHL d-man, they would not leave him exposed; and frankly if Juulsen or Fleury look as though they are reaching a second pair ceiling then you would protect one of them.
Look at how fast Vegas not only became a winning team but also how they became a cap team. If Seattle envisions following that model, I imagine they would not want a guy Weber's age taking up such a sizable piece of cap space until 2027. So in reality if Montreal still values Weber's contribution at least to some extent and they also do not want to lose a good young d-man to Seattle, then it is probably pretty safe to leave Weber unprotected.

If they follow the same rules as before anyone with a no movement clause will have to be protected if they refuse to waive their no movement clause. You are right Petry's contract is up in 2021, so we won't have to protect him. But Alnzer and Chariot have modified no movement clauses. I can't find anywhere if there is a difference in the protection rules for full no movement clauses vs modified no movement clauses. (Hopefully there is … if so, we only HAVE to protect Carey Price)

If Weber is still playing 20+ minutes a night while putting up 40+ points then absolutely they will take him. They have to reach the cap floor too, and don't forget that his actual salary drops tremendously as his contract ages. They'll have to pay him $6 million in 2021-22, but after that it drops to $3 million, and then $1 million for the last three years of the deal. This is great for any team (like an expansion team) that needs to meet the cap floor (either Seattle, or some team that Seattle subsequently trades him to). I don't think Seattle will do as well as Vegas as I don't think teams are going to be as willing to make side deals to protect various players. I think most GMs over-thought the whole process, and in the end hurt themselves more. All those too-clever side deals to protect various players ended up costing way more than it was worth. Check out this article to see how NHL GMs shot themselves in the foot to "protect" themselves from the expansion draft. With Seattle I think most GMs will just accept that they are going to lose a player they would rather not lose, and go from there. If it's a Mete, or Juulsen, or whoever, then so be it. Given the depth of our farm system these days, and the amount of picks we still have coming, we should come out of this okay, no matter who we lose. EDIT: Alexie Emelin had a modified NTC, and he was still selected by Vegas. So unless he specifically waived it (and I never heard that he did), then it appears that players with modified NTC can be exposed. I believe it's only players with No Movement Clauses that have to be protected.

The Rookie Camp roster has been announced. 28 players, with Teasdale being the only one injured and unable to participate. 8 try outs, including most of the invitees from the Development Camp earlier this summer. I expect they will offer a few of them AHL deals. A guy like York on defense could still be signed to a full NHL deal that would slide as he is only 19 and would return to the OHL this season. Anyway, let's see how the invitees do in camp first. Hawel did look good in July and Struthers did play some games at the end of the OHL season last year with Laval, so you figure they may be looking at those guys for AHL deals, especially with Teasdale missing so much time this year.

I'll be there for the Saturday and Sunday games against Ottawa and Winnipeg, respectively ... just a 45-minute drive to the CAA Arena in Belleville ... I've wanted to attend these before, but I missed my chances in the past ... Cheers.

It’s been ages though. You will also get to see Scott Walford...in a Jets’ jersey. A few of the invites/try outs will be interesting because I think they will be looking to sign a few to AHL deals. Although our Euro and NCAA guys won’t be there, there still will be some top end drafted guys in the lineup like Poehling, Suzuki, Brook, Fleury, Primeau. Enjoy!

I'd rather be watching the play than fighting with autocorrect, but I also know what I'll be looking for and having a good time will be at the top of the list ... Cheers.

While HabsRus will have our in-the-stands correspondent (Dis) at both Habs' prospect games this weekend, you can also check out the games as TSN will be streaming them on their website and on their app. I believe you just have to pick your cable provider (if you have TSN on cable) and it will give you that cable provider's normal account sign-on to access the streams. www.tsn.ca/top-prospects-headline-rookie-showcase-games-on-tsn-1.1360381Habs' games are as follows: Saturday, Sept 7 7:00pm ET OTT vs MTL Sunday, Sept 8 7:00pm ET MTL vs WPG

Hopelessly looking for a way out of the boredom. I dare anyone to show me a team whose roster is the same 2 years apart. Go ahead. I double dare ya. Sorry. Time to go back to my nap.

If you see the video above, Bouchard mentioned that he and Claude discussed this. Ah Claude!! #safeisdeath #luvthevets Not sure if Suzuki's pro game is best suited for C or RW, but I don't expect that will be sorted out in September while he is still just 20. I also saw somewhere that he mentioned he has put on some weight and has been working on skating with Barb Underhill. Both are key elements from this off-season, so looking forward to seeing him play this year in his pro debut.

In addition to Teasdale, tryout Struthers will miss camp due to injury. I figured he had a very good chance at an AHL contract as the Habs had him on a ATO with Laval at the end of last season.

Hopefully I'll have power to watch the games. Dorian on its way ... Batten down the hatches and stay safe. Was downgraded to a Cat 1 late last night. When Juan rolled through in 2003 it was rated at a Cat 2 upon landfall, but the amount of damage it did suggested there were pockets within it that were far more powerful. City was shut down for 3 days after it. We'll see what this one does. I've put away everything I can.
